Hypothetical: The Panthers get the #1 pick (1 Viewer)

Assume that Bryce Young continues about on the same trajectory he is now the rest of the year. Not great. Not terrible.

Ok, the thread is a bit of a brainfart. Sorry @FreeBaGeL

But while on the subject two things I need to say.

I really think people should get out of the mindset of thinking of Caleb Williams as the QB1 and start thinking of it in terms as him vs Maye. I think it's a real debate among teams.

If I was Carolina I'd leave tired Frank back in Chicago. What a disaster, what a lifeless show. If looking at totality of draft picks, cap space and existing talent they have the bleakest outlook of any team in the NFL and I really don't think it's close. Frank may not be the reason but he's sure not the answer to any of it. Heck, even Irsay knew his tired show was time to end. I heard all off-season how Carolina had put together an awesome staff of experienced assistants. I'd start shaking stuff up now, at least try and get some energy building for the this tired outfit.

Panthers will offer Kirk Cousins $ 42 M per season. What other choice do they have without draft picks to fall back on? He might be only QB that is proven enough that they justify benching Young for. Very similar to Jets bringing in Rodgers to replace Zack Wilson. I can't wait to hear the spin now. Young is really taking to Cousins tutelage etc.

Didn't they trade their #1 to the Bears?

Correct. I'm an idiot. Can we get a mod in here to make it so this thread never happened?
I dig it. The ol' "oh darn, that's right, they....." method of throwing salt in the wound.

Outside of a team guaranteeing $250 million to a terrible QB or trading multiple draft picks for a terrible coach, it's hard to imagine a team screwing up their franchise worse than the Panthers have been lately.

Outside of trading up in the wrong draft to draft the wrong QB, the Miles Sanders thing was pretty impressive. In a year when the league collectively decided not to pay RB's, the Panthers dropped a bag on their 3rd best RB.

As an NC native always looking for a reason to root for the Panthers (and never being able to find it), the original sin was trading up back in to the 3rd round of the 2022 to obviously take Sam Howell, of course. Oh darn, that's right they traded up to take Matt Corrall instead.

It's all been a calamity since then.

The hypothetical question is still interesting.

If they had the number 1 would they take him.

Till they've put sufficient pieces around him it's hard to say he's a bust, but they clearly shouldn't have made the trade they did last year. If they were watching the performances he's put in so far on another team, they'd be feeling like they dodged a bullet not making the trade.

It'd probably make sense for them to trade back if they had the 1.

No way. The difference between the Jets and Panthers talent-wise is night and day. Jets have a world class defense and studs like Hall and Wilson on offense. They were literally only a QB away from being a Super Bowl contendor.

I feel like if Chicago lands the #1 pick (from Carolina) then they probably take Caleb or Maye, and look to trade Fields to a team like Atlanta. The alternative would be to trade the 1.01 again for another supposed haul, but the risk of doing that two years in a row and still having nothing to show for it is what gets their entire FO canned. And the risk of Fields never panning out, and having Caleb/Maye become franchise guys elsewhere is just repeating the Trubisky/Mahomes draft mishap all over again

Actually the Bears should do the opposite - keep Fields and trade 1.1 for another haul. Most likely this coaching staff is gone, let the next coach make that decision. Maybe the next coach can develop Fields or Bagent, and they should have a great piece coming in with their 1st round pick.

@FreeBaGeL Well, to be fair, you did say it was a "hypothetical."
That's what I was thinking to. This is hypothetical. All due respect to Bagel.

IMO, it's too early to give up on Young. The CAR OL is horrific, their running game sucks and they have little receiving weapons outside of Thielen who is on the back nine of his career. And the CAR offense has zero creativity.

If CAR had the #1 pick, they trade down like CHI did this past year.

Well, that and an OL.

There is zero chance that if the Bears will be in position to take one of those QB's they will opt to run it back with Fields.

Fields won't have much of a trade market either and I'd put the odds as fairly high it's not a team in need of a starter that acquires him or put another he's not acquired to be a teams starting QB. Think more in terms of Lance to Dallas for a mid round pick.

I'm rooting for Fields, but he hasn't shown the passing ability to justify passing on the best QB in the draft, for the cost of only one draft pick.

That'll be an easy call, because the fans and press are all gonna want the new guy. It'll be overwhelming. Fields is done in CHI as a starter after this year, is my guess.
