I am watching every Bond movie: please kill me (1 Viewer)

From Russia with Love is still my favorite. Brand lost it's way late Connery early Roger Moore. Moore's movies had some cool gadgets and Jane Seymour as Solitaire was ♥️. The first 3-4 movies aged way better than the middle years.

  • Casino Royale
  • Goldfinger
  • Skyfall

Least favorite - Moonraker. That was really bad. As much as I hate No Time to Die, I doubt it will overtake Moonraker.

I was surprised that my favorite Bond turned out to be Pierce Brosnan. Thought he was great.

I've enjoyed Craig, but he does take a lot of the fun out of Bond. Especially in NTTD.

I watched the Peter Sellers spoof Casino Royale. I didn't like that at all.

There are a lot of really good theme songs (Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, A View to a Kill, Goldfinger). But the absolute worst was the horrible song that Sam Smith sings at the start of Spectre. Its really bad.

Anyway, I have enjoyed the experience. And look forward to the series re-starting.

But not one of films is in your top 5. The way you feel about Moonraker is exactly how I feel about Octopussy.......blech. I need to come up with my rankings again after I do a Bond marathon LOL. Will start it soon. I do know my top 5 though:

1. Goldfinger
2. Casino Royale
3. From Russia With Love
4. The Spy Who Loved Me
5. Dr No

I’m surprised too but I’ve always disliked Brosnan and wasn’t a fan of any of his movies save Goldeneye being ok. I do agree he got bad scripts.

My ranking hasn’t changed since I posted them years ago:

Connery > Craig > Moore > Brosnan > Dalton > Lazenby

I really liked Craig in the role. I was fine with the darker/grittier side of Bond he brought to it. I even liked his more sarcastic vs. sophomoric humor.

There's an inverse relationship between these two IMO. Pierce was best suited to be Bond (sorry, Connery fans) but outside of Goldeneye had poor scripts. Meanwhile, Craig had outstanding scripts but lacked the charisma and sophistication I like to seen in Bond.

I guess we all have different thoughts and notions on who / what Bond is as a character. From what I remember of Ian Fleming's version of Bond in literary form, he was not a pretty boy and was much more of a ruthless, heavy handed, thuggish character. But he didn't have much of a sense of humor, didn't throw out one liners, and didn't get unusual gadgets to use. It's been years since I read the books, but IMO Craig's characterization and look was probably the closest to the way Bond was presented in the books. Connery's portrayal seemed to make him out as a ladies' man with a lot of puns and quips (I liked his films the most).

I never liked George Lazenby as Bond or OHMSS as a film that much. Moore got even more cutesy and more gadgets (and mediocre scripts and some odd villains). TSWLM is the only standout Moore effort (although I watch the rest pretty frequently). I liked the storyline of the Dalton movies more than I liked Dalton. IIRC, GoldenEye was originally conceived with Dalton in mind, and IMO, that was the one successful Brosnan movie. While I thought Brosnan would be a good Bond long before they picked him, I didn't like any of his other outings. Sure, the scripts and storylines were lacking, but I didn't love Pierce's turn at the lead role.

I tend to agree with others that Casino Royale was probably the best non-Connery Bond flick. I though Skyfall was an excellent overall movie . . . but probably only a good Bond movie (ie, the technical elements, lighting, editing, framing, etc. of the movie were better than most Bond movies, but that doesn't automatically make it a good Bond movie). NTTD didn't move me at all, and at this point, I am not sure how they reimagine the franchise to make it true to the book version of Bond while big budget enough to have big action set pieces. Sadly, I think we will end up with a Bond that fits the current social climate (which I won't be a fan of). The plot of NTTD seemed more like an episode of Black Mirror than a Bond movie.

I am with you. The first 4 Connery (yeah I really like Thunderball too) BOnd films are iconic and have stood the test of time.

I really like Daniel Craigs Bond....Casino Royale is amazing. Skyfall is great and I enjoyed Spectre and NTTD. Quantum of Solace was really meh.

When it comes to Pierce...I only liked his first and his last Bond films. Goldeneye and much maligned Die Another Day

I liked Timothy Dalton....he was given a bad rap but he was great as James Bond.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is highly underrated.

These three are 100% for sure in my top five, and I can't argue with the other two choices. I'd consider Thunderball and You Only Live Twice as well.
 
I think the producers should take the series in a retro direction for the next Bond cycle. It would allow the character to be truer to the original Fleming/Connery concept without having him appear hopelessly out of touch with current social norms. It might be harder to rake in extra extra loot for product placement although retro clothes and watches are in style again and they seem to accepted the Aston Martin DB5 is forever associated with 007 no matter the decade.

Seriously, why not go back to the cold war? That was the perfect backdrop for this franchise.

Dalton could've been something, but the lack of budget his movies were given is very evident in the product.

Agree with all this. Daniel Craig was a good Bond. Brosnan was good in GoldenEye, which was a great video game too. I like Lazenby's one film. He was average, but the story was excellent relative to Bond movies. There was simply a lot of trash in the middle ... Octopussy, Moonraker. View to a Kill. All terrible. You Only Live Twice is the only early Bond movie I don't like. Bond passing as Japanese ... please.

I always thought they should go back to the previous 007. And use WW2, Vietnam, Korea War as the backdrop. Go totally debonaire and classy. To me they have worn out the action side. That's a little of what made Austin Powers such a great spoof. They took it back to the 60s. Take us to his predecessor hooking up with German and Italian chics to steal secrets. The possibilities are endless if you think about all the British Empire falling apart ... India, Caribbean, Africa, etc

If you have Hulu, the George Lazenby documentary Becoming Bond is a pretty entertaining watch.

George is a better storyteller than secret agent (although I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for OHMSS because it was my first 007 movie).

For whatever reason, I’m the exact opposite. Craig is the best and Brosnan the worst.
