Plumber just left. I got the vid on DVD... $260 later we got a verdict: pipe is compromised between toilet drain and main drain line. No smoking gun but the drain looked ok all the way to the city and as he puts it, the next worm to crawl 80 feet up the drain to your toilet would be the first.

Pipe is clearly corroded where the drain goes down and 90s. Can't find a hole but the worms say it is there. That area has concrete around it and earth below it. Photo here

To fix it means digging up that concrete pa and replacing the pipe to the common drain. I will file that under 'future projects'

For now guy says he would pop the toilet back on and just flush every day or two, keep the worms at bay, no harm no foul.
