If you had a young son, Would you let him attend a party school? (1 Viewer)

Do you think it's appropriate to send off your son to a school like UMass or Arizona State? My uncle doesn't seem to keen in letting his 17 yr old son go to either school. How would you react as a parent?

I'd definitely encourage them to explore other options.

<<-- kicked out of UW Madison after freshman year.

There are parties at every school. Just because a school is labeled a 'party school' doesn't mean that zero academic work gets done.

I certainly wouldn't pay out of state tuition for any of my kids to attend Arizona State, for instance. It is well below average academically, in addition to being a party school. If one of them really wanted to go to a college or university that was known for being a party school, but also was at least above average academically, I'd be a lot less resistant.

As for our in-state options, there is one (Washington State) that is known as a party school, but that is mainly because it is located in the middle of nowhere (seriously) and there is nothing else to do. But most students go there because of a lack of other options, rather than by choice. Though most of them deny it.

Right, if your kid is going to want to party, he will find it whether it's ASU or Montana State.

Can he get into the Umass honors program?  Some of my daughters smarter acquaintances who could not afford private college went that route.

Yes

And I'd recommend ASU. Good business school and get to have the time of your life.  Let the kid decide, he's going to sink or swim wherever he goes.

I say yes, on two conditions. Each condition is universal, whether or not the school is a party school or not:

1. The school is the right fit. (Size of student body, academic programs, school culture, fits the personality of my son).

2. He takes care of the academics. You can get a good education nearly anywhere. What matters more is what you put into your education. ASU or UMass can be great places for students. The bottom line is grades and health. If your grades stink and your liver is being eviscerated- I wouldn't advise any college. That would show me he's not ready. I'm cool with partying and did plenty myself, but it's all about balance. Drinking 5 or 6 (or 7) days a week is a deal breaker no matter where you go.

Sounds like he has trust and attachment issues.

I don't think it works like you uncle thinks.  There's no "party school" - there's "party students" and they're at every school, as are "non-party students".  His kid will either be a party student, or he won't.  Doesn't matter where he goes to school.  ASU has over 20,000 students attending its Tempe campus - I doubt they're all alike.

You doubt that all 20,000 students are alike?  That's a pretty hot take you're throwing out there...  O/U on thread pages just went from 4 to 44

My 2 daughters graduated from UC Santa Barbara.  Very good university academically but if you want to party Isla Vista would temp anyone. Some can handle the balance, some can't.  I honestly think my son would have flunked out there in his first year.  Wasn't mature enough at his age to handle it.  He took a longer route and it worked out fine.  My daughters were more mature, knew how to manage time and study hard, etc.  Lots of kids flunk out though.
