If you win money in a money league, do you have to tip the commish? (3 Viewers)

I just won 150 bucks in my fantasy league for finishing second. Am I supposed to give the commisioner a tip for running the league. We had a live draft so he had to write down everyone's picks and input it into Yahoo, and he sent out an Excel spreadsheet every week with the standings. Someone told me I should give him a tip for his work.

I commish a league and would never accept a tip. I don't think most commissioners expect tips.

As a long-time Commissioner, a simple thank you and recognition for our efforts is more than enough.

Agreed. Show some appreciation is enough. I commish a simple $ league too and would never accept a tip - it could be taken the wrong way too!

Ditto. In the league I run after I send out all the final year end stuff and everyone congratulates the winner, one guy in the league always sends out an email thanking me and bashing me at the same time for every little thing that happened all year.I wouldn't take a monetary tip. That's enough.

A good tip for most commissioners would be a book on how to meet women!

It's just a joke all you commisioner out there.

Do you all believe league dues should set aside a small stipend for the commish?

Maybe something small, like 2-4% of all prize money?

Everytime I've won money, I've bought the Commish a beer at our season-end function. If I win it all, I buy all the manager's a beer, and the Commish a 2nd...

That and a thank you are all that's needed. I'm a Commish in one league, as well.

I think that is what I will be doing as well, toppshelff.

If the commish in my main money league didn't make me go around the SB party collecting my own $$, I'd be real generous. But if he does that again this year, it'll be beers instead of shots of Tullamor Dew. (He did it the two years I won the league, the year I came in second, and to the runner up last year, so I don't expect anything different ths year)

I'm the commish of a league and I've also run our office NCAA pool the last couple of years. For some reason, I have a weird double standard that I wouldn't accept a tip for league commish duties, but I would (and have) accepted tips for running the NCAA pool, usually the winner (if they choose to tip) covers my entry fee.

Maybe it's because I wouldn't want to create even the slightest hint of impropriety in my league. With the pool, I'm entering in 60-80 brackets into an Excel sheet (all the good website pools are websensed), and sending out daily standings etc.

I commish one league, don't ask for a tip but one guy has told me to keep a small part of his winnings the past two years. I take it. Since I've done nothing out of the ordinary to bend the rules for anyone, I feel no guilt and do appreciate the tip. It's time consuming to be the commish, so why not?

I believe in the stipend, but not the tip.

It takes alot of work to be commish and to be a good one you often have to screw yourself to avoid impropriatey, that's a lot easier to do if a percentage of the league fee goes toward your entrance fee.

I don't like the fact that the bigger tipper could win a big decision.

I do the same thing. Me(commish) and my treasurer have an unspoken agreement that if one of us cashes, and the other one doesn't, the one that cashes picks up whatever transaction fees the other has amassed over the year.

When I first read the question I thought ofcourse you do. I was commish in my local redraft league here in town and sometimes I got tipped and others not. Two years ago I won the league (no longer commish) and tipped the commish. I also started a dynasty league of which all owners came from the shark pool and I never once received a tip or an official thank you. I never complained or sulked about it as the competition is what I play for not the money. This year one of the other owners took over as commish and I took the championship. I tipped him 10% of my winnings which I believe is the right thing to do. Then I read all the replies talking about how it wouldn't look right to tip the commish and I begin to think how sad it is we have sunk so low that we have to worry about people cheating us. But it is realistic that it happens and now I wonder it anyone suspects fowl play. We had a couple new owners join the league this year and I didn't intened to give the wrong impression. I still stand by the fact that it is ok to tip as well as accept for all the work a commish does and if anybody suspects cheating most likely there the one that needs to be watched.

Back in the old days prior to the internet, I was in a couple leagues where the commish's entry fees came out of the pot for all of the manual tracking and scoring that they had to do. Since things are basically automatically taken care of now through the hosting websites, this isn't the case anymore. In terms of entering the players from the draft, we started inputting them via wireless Wi-Fi during the draft and most other issues are taken care of with a league vote, so commish duties are very limited and not really time consuming.

No to tipping and no to a stipend. I am a bit upset that I pay a stipend in one league I am in because it was never expressed to us that we do but putting 2 + 2 together over the years there is no other conclusion that comes of it. People volunteer to be commishes because they want to set up a league to play a game and compete. If people are setting up leagues to play a game and compete but at a lesser cost because they are the ones that set it up... that is pretty low.

Just this week, I was going to join a league until I found out that the commish was charging $250 over hosting fees and he got a free prize eligible team. When I asked him about this he told me he was in a league where the commish was charging $500 and got two free prize eligible teams. I decided not to join the league.

When I won it all last season (commish came in 2nd), I included an extra $20 in his check (I am the treasurer). Told him his next few beers were on me.

In other leagues, there has been no tipping going on that I am aware of.

This parallels my experience as well. It's pretty easy these days, plus I have a co-commish. A simple "thank you" on the league message board is plenty good enough for me.

It's time consuming to be the commish? How so?
Oh, there's still a couple of chores that non-commishes take for granted. Organizing the auction/draft is still pretty wearisome. Then there's free agent maintenance and the weekly recaps to do. But it's certainly not like the pre-internet days and I like doing it and doing it well. Therefore, no compensation for me, thank you.

im actually in a league where the commish still takes a cut for himself every year...

I'm still not sure why your commish is sending out weekly rankings in an Excel file if your league is hosted at Yahoo. :hangover:

I would not accept a tip, but the notion that someone would want to is indeed gratifying :hangover: ...and as commish of too many leagues, I want to thank all the Misfits who've sent a heart felt "thanks"

...believe me, it matters!

If he's part of the league, no. If he isnt, a 6 pack wouldnt kill ya.

I am the commissioner of a dynasty league for money. You have to be paying attention all year long as there is trading happening even in the off-season, esp for draft picks. Winners have offered me money for all the work I do, writing articles, etc.. but I would NEVER accept.

I, the commisioner started a tradition where I demanded the winner ouf our league takes out the commish & his wife for a nice dinner. Typically the 1st place winner gets $1800.00-$2000.00, Oh by the way this year I WON & will continue the tradition!

Yes...... you tip. Unless the Commish wins money...If you dont tip, you should.

Those who say "Hell No" are not giving in to the fact that the commish works hard for you and every year has to deal with more bullsh*t than a rodeo clown.

there was already a thread like this......that might have more info

I've never been offered a tip and don't really expect one. However, if someone offered I'd probably accept it.

I feel I put in a lot of time into it, so why not ?

What really pisses me off though, is, at last years end, I sent out an e-mail saying I was retiring as commish after having spent many a years doing it. Not a one person stepped forward to do it. :banned: If I did not step up at the last minute (mid August), after receiving many of e-mails wanting to know when things were going to get rolling (even after saying I was no longer going to run it :excited: ), the league would have folded. In fact, we did lose one, who figured we were not going to have another season and joined another league.

Some people just have no clue, and expect everything.
