I'm finding it tough to support the UFC (1 Viewer)

Two links. One to a deadspin argument that really made me think about supporting MMA/UFC and a Youtube link to the best knockouts of 2013.

The article spells out that one of the problems with UFC is the officiating:

On the basis of a review of fights on numbered UFC cards from 2007 through early 2012, they concluded that the average time between a knockout and a fight actually ending was 3.5 seconds. Fighters, on average, took an additional 2.6 strikes to the head after a knockout. Even worse, in its way, a corner or doctor stopped only seven fights—just a touch over one per year. This is a problem.
The video illustrates the point. With the exception of the fights where the victorious fighter holds up, I don't see one fight where the knocked out fighter doesn't eat one or more shots.

Someone will likely die and I'm not sure I can live with watching any more. Does anyone have a moral justification so I can get back to something I really enjoyed since I got No Way Out on VHS?

Nature of the beast. How close do you want the refs to the action? Or would you suggest they jump in the second one fighter goes down?

Either way...still better than boxing.

That's really the million dollar question. I've screamed about early and bad stoppages as much as anyone. I'm wondering if eliminating striking a prone fighter from a standing position would do it? But that gets rid of a lot of legitimate offense.

I think a lot also falls on cornermen. From the article I linked:

Corners need to stop treating the idea of throwing in the towel as something that robs fans of the fight they paid for.
Part of me wishes that UFC had something similar to the 8-count. This would give a ref a chance to assess if a fighter can continue after taking a shot that put him on the ground. But, that's not fair to the fighter that threw the blow if it gives his opponent an opportunity to recover and the fight continues. Also, the 8-Count is probably the biggest reason boxers take unnecessary punishment.

8 Count would only make things worse. Would be an absolute nightmare.

I've never been outraged at an 'early stoppage'. I think on the whole, officials do a great job (at least at UFC level).. Obviously some (Herb Dean specifically) are better than others.

I still think it's less dangerous than boxing. Those boxers take hundreds of hits to the head every fight. That's not good. In MMA one good blow and you are knocked out. If you take an extra here or there, that's cool. It's probably still less dangerous than the continuous beating boxers take.

Herb Dean is the king of early stoppages. He's good, but he definitely errs on the side of safety of the fighter. Sometimes too much IMO.

You're obviously a fan of MMA. So you know what a lawless, no holds barred lanscape it was before UFC types started adding "rules." They've come a long way. I don't think this is a death knell when the sport has finally gained prominence.
