Panthers claim WR Thomas off waivers

CHARLOTTE -- In an ongoing effort to upgrade the worst offense in the league, the Carolina Panthers claimed wide receiver Devin Thomas off waivers from the Washington Redskins Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Thomas played collegiately at Michigan State and was selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Redskins, but fell out of favor with the team.

He caught 40 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons with the Redskins.

Five weeks into the NFL season, the Panthers rank last in NFL in points per game, total yards, yards per play, passing net yards per play, turnovers and first downs per game.

Thomas is the second receiver the Panthers have claimed in the last week. They previously claimed David Clowney off waivers from the New York Jets. The Panthers now have six wide receivers on the roster.

To make room on the roster for Thomas, offensive lineman Tim Duckworth was waived.

RECORD SETTING DAY: Amidst the ugly defeat Sunday, the Panthers defense actually set a franchise record limiting the Chicago Bears to 29 net passing yards.

NO CHANGES COMING: Despite the team’s 0-5 record, coach John Fox said he doesn’t expect any changes to the coaching staff or the starting lineup.

“No, I think we just have to play better,” Fox said.

So how do the Panthers go about fixing things?

“I think at this stage we've got nowhere to go but up, so we've got plenty to work on,” Fox said. “We'll use this time to freshen up the players as well as get two hard days to improve in areas we need improvement at.”

SOME TIME AWAY: Although the Panthers appear in need of some extra work, Fox will not deviate from his bye schedule in previous seasons. That means the Panthers will practice Wednesday and Thursday and then have a three-day weekend.

Fox said one of the reason for that is the team is so young that many of the rookies will be hitting a wall around Week 8.

EDWARDS PACKAGE: Armanti Edwards saw two snaps at quarterback on Sunday and the net result was a 1-yard gain.

When a reporter asked him about the boost Edwards gave the offense and why he didn’t play more quarterback, Fox replied, “I must have missed that. We had a minus-6 and a (plus-7) play and then he was out.”

That was largely because the Panthers only had two plays in the game plan for Edwards.

When asked if he’s looking to expand the Mountaineer package, Fox replied, “We're looking at all means to move up from 32,” referring to his team’s league ranking on offense.

INJURY UPDATE: Wide receiver Steve Smith was seen walking through the locker room Monday without an air cast on his injured ankle. However, Fox offered no update on Smith’s status.

The same goes for offensive tackle Jeff Otah, who has missed the last five games with a knee injury.

They've needed another wr for some time. Thomas was a first round pick iirc. No reason to not gamble on him, regardless of Smith's status.

Umm when your 31 year old WR is out with a injury they are being very hush hush about, and that team goes out and signs TWO wr's in a week (clowney last week) I'd say it raises an eyebrow about what they feel about his status going forward, or potentially that there might be something to the trade rumors.

The only thing ominous about this is they started 2 rookie receivers last week and that wasn't the biggest reason the passing game was terrible.

Not ominous at all.

Everyone who cares about Steve Smith's production from everyone of his fantasy owner's, to Jerry Richardson, to Steve Smith himself, to his mom should be thrilled at the prospect of the Panthers signing anybody that will help the offense and take any defensive focus off him.

Hell, signing Andre Johnson would be the best damn thing to happen to Steve Smith fantasy fortunes since Delhomme could break a pane of glass with a spiral from 10 feet away.

Having said that, we're talking about a guy the Redskins just cut...

I mean, if you were a GM and you were happy with David Gettis and Brandon LaFell as your Top 2 WRs, then you should be fired on the spot.

Why not sign guys and create some competition. Thomas has the talent, if he works out, you have another weapon

:goodposting: They haven't really been hush hush. They said from the start that Smith has a high ankle sprain. Also there was a thread on the the Thomas signing several days ago.

If there's any justice in the world Smith will be traded to a team with a real QB. His situation is probably the biggest waste of WR talent in the NFL.

I agree with those that have said this says more about all the CAR WRs who are not named Steve Smith...

Why would nt they trade DeAngelo Williams to upgrade WR or picks for next season.

he is UFA next season if i am not wrong they will lose him for nothing ..

The are 0-5 no hopes , no QB and they have another good young RB .

Because they're not playing FF???Maybe they will re-sign Williams. If they don't re-sign him, maybe the comp picks will still be around when the next CBA is worked out, in case, they wouldn't lose him for nothing.

Devin Thomas couldn't keep the corpse of Joey Galloway off the field. He won't be able to do a thing to hinder Smiff.
