Indefinite New York Jets Official thread - **2025 season** - The indefinite rebuild continues (4 Viewers)

I can’t wait for all the funny jokes that will fill this thread soon. Some real clever minds on this site.

Working on it (just kidding).

They shouldn't swear any promise to Adams/Rodgers - that stuff got nullified today. The $30m hit or whatever it is would be worth the free hand to the new GM. Rip the band aid off - look to the Broncos as a franchise that was able to take a big hit like that and turn things around quicker than anyone expects. If that means a skeleton crew for a season while cap penalties play out it is worth a more solid foundation.

If your team goes 90s steinbrenner mode with sports people running the store for a few years you never know.

I'm too busy watching terrible defense to throw any stones

Though turning around and have Belichick take over everything would be a fun plot twist. (Someone will mention the guy so I might as well get that one out of the way).

Glenn will likely interview for both the Jets and the Saints. Dude deserves a shot.

Ben Johnson probably gets offers, says he wants to be the HMFIC, but he’s also really comfortable. We’ll see how picky he remains. The rumors of a $15M ask were either false or his way of saying I’m pretty happy where I’m at but you can try.

I loved Glenn when he played for the Jets. I'm sure he deserves a shot, but I hope it's with the Saints. I don't want another first time defensive head coach, but the Jets seem to love it.
As good of a story as it would be, I agree. They need an offensive mind this time around - preferably someone with experience.

Teams generally go the opposite way of the one they just fired. Offense coach following a defensive minded HC, hard nosed disciplinarian after a players coach. Not always but seems to be the pattern.

And rumors of Curtis Martin as President of Football Ops? I could totally see the amazing Johnson duo pulling that one off.
I have no idea if martin is remotely qualified, but he can't possibly do a worst job than the Johnsons themselves have done running the team. So I guess i'm saying sure, let's get nuts.

Not the Jets my friend. They have a rich tradition of bad defensive head coaches except for Gase who was merely bad, but in a special way.

Listening to a bunch of podcasts - heard a name that actually made me interested and should be very possible. John Gruden. Offensive coach with HC/playoff/SB experience. Looking to get back in the mix after the Raider mess. Enough time has passed from his issues - perhaps he and Woody are desperate enough. Id rather go this route than yet another young coordinator - thoughts?

No. His Raiders drafts with Mayock were the worst in NFL memory.
true but he also put together some other nice teams - if not him who would get you excited that is realistic?

He put together one playoff and then they were horrible because of horrible drafting that they still can’t shake. It was that bad. Check the Raiders thread. See their picks.

That was all Al Davis, Gruden the coach had the locker room and the players buying in (minus AB)

Al Davis was dead.

Broncos turned it around so quick because they have Payton - truly an upper echelon coach who is an expert at offense and develops QB. Dont think there is another like him out there or if there was one who would come to this mess.

Belichick despises the Jets - but desperation makes crazy bedfellows - I could envision a crazy scenario a desperate Woody hands him the keys with ironclad no interference promise and its much better than any of BBs other options - its like a less than 1% chance but could you imagine? Presser should be announced on a napkin with him being named HC of NYJ lol

I was going quick before a meeting but either way Mark/Al same shtick.

Grudens drafts:
2018: OT Kolton Miller, DT P.J. Hall, OT Brandon Parker, DE Arden Key
2019: DE Clelin Ferrell, RB Josh Jacobs, S Johnathan Abram, CB Trayvon Mullen Jr.
2020: WR Henry Ruggs III, CB Damon Arnette, WR Lynn Bowden Jr., WR Bryan Edwards, LB Tanner Muse

These are bad? CD over Ruggs was stupid but that was also the Davis MO of fast wr's. Trading Mack who was unhappy for 2 firsts and Amari hands made of stone Cooper for a first as well were far from terrible.

They’re terrible. Abram and Arbette are awful. Jacobs in the first is terrible. Look at Cle Ferrell. He’s not with the Raiders.

Those are all awful and I don’t have time to really debate it. They stink.

Total side bar: You mentioning the Broncos "ripping the band aid off" - makes it a little more realistic that Sean Payton wasn't the one in New Orleans keeping all those contracts in town.

Anyway - on the Jets - Hey, Douglas gambled hard on Rodgers and lost. I've seen worse gambles.

Why Belichick? NYJ have to express their anal gland of the Aaron Rogers blockage before they can think about a coach.

Unless you mean "hand him (BB) the keys" means make him GM? BB's track record is not so great in that regard.

Unless Rodgers retires its an issue for the next coach/GM - let him be a bridge QB or rip off the band aid and take a huge cap hit.

To land BB they would probably have to make an offer that blows away every other team - might include personnel say which I agree was not his strong suit. His age and lack of success post Brady makes him a less than desirable replacement IMO but Woody loves headlines and stars - this would be a huge one. As I said - a less than 1% chance but a fun thing to envision

The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt and Dianna Russini report Jets owner Woody Johnson took increased control over the team this season.

Rosenblatt and Russini report now-fired general manager Joe Douglas “had already lost some power midway through last season when Johnson took a more active role”. After a Week 4 loss to the Broncos, Johnson “suggested to coaches that they bench Aaron Rodgers”. A week later, he made the decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh “without consulting his general manager”. Johnson also made decisions on player signings and front office firings over the offseason, decreasing Douglas’ power as general manager and pressuring certain decisions, like nixing a trade for Jerry Jeudy and a contract extension for Bryce Hall. Douglas has now been fired as the Jets will hit reset in the offseason. Johnson returned to run the Jets in 2021, after serving as the United States’ Ambassador to the United Kingdom - his brother ran the team when the Jets hired Douglas in 2019.

It is going to be interesting when Joe Douglas is free to speak on the Jets moves. I wonder how many were his brain child. Not sure if he was really the GM or just a commodities broker for the owner. I really only know him from does draft day trade behind the scenes snippets when he is wheeling and dealing draft capital.

I seriously doubt we ever hear the true story from JD - these guys have non-disparagement clauses and he wants to keep working in the NFL. Rarely do you see a straight on trash job by a former employee in NFL - if anything youll see it through "leaks"

If it's all true, why would any GM ever take the job? (Even if woody goes back to London). No point in caring anymore
At least Jerry Jones embraces it - there have been whispers about Woody meddling for years - this season is the 1st with indisputable proof.

Im praying Woody learned his lesson from this debacle - just look at the worst owner in sports in the past James Dolan. He was awful - meddled everywhere - finally hired good people and now sits back and watches winning. Its not impossible

Yup Woody should just go ahead and become the 3rd owner-GM at this point.

It could get the Jets on the next Simpsons-cast. (Total aside I really wanna see Mike Brown as Abe Simpson on that broadcast now)

If Woody really is leaving the scene for a while do they hire someone before he goes?

I don't think the Rodgers move was that big a gamble. They went the route of a top 3 pick twice and it didn't work. The timing was there with GB ready to hand the keys to Love and Douglas had about a 2-3 year window for it to work and save his job. What's the other option? Stick with Zach Wilson? Draft a third QB?

One of the things the Jets did not account for was Rodgers the person. I don't think enough credit is given to both the Packers coaching staff and GM for handling Rodgers unique personality. It has been documented that Rodgers was not particularly liked in the locker room, players were happy to see him leave and he consistently questioned the team's personnel decisions in public and private. There is only so much appeasement you can give to a declining player, before it negatively impacts the organization. The Packers have shown operational and management consistency and success. The Jets have not. His acquisition was really the final Jenga piece to pull to make the whole thing fall apart.

I feel like Rodgers' injury was the turning point, and the circumstances under which it happened was the most Jets thing ever. The Jets could've mailed it in at that point, but instead they doubled down and went all in on Rodgers this year. Then, when it started to go south because today's Rodgers is not very good, they coddled him and blamed everyone else by firing Salah, and even found Rodgers a new toy (Adams) in hopes that it would appease him. Now, they fire Douglas, further cementing the idea that none of this is poor Aaron or the owner's fault. There's no accountability for anything.

The new interesting rumor is supposedly Woody wanted Rodgers benched in early September for Tyrod Taylor - not sure how that can be accurate as who would stop it after Saleh and JD both fired - if Rodgers starts after the bye then that was obviously false.

It wasnt an awful gamble - quite frankly if Arod stayed healthy last year with that D in place they could have made a run...too many mistakes in the offseason on D and signings that didnt pay off. However it blew up so dont know how anyone can be upset at the firings - I just dont like the way Woody did it.

From the reporters I listened to - Chris Johnson is much more liked than Woody. He made an awful hire with Gase but maybe he learned from it. I personally am ok shipping Woody off as soon as possible!

every time there is a reset i, as a life long jet fan, immediately think that anything has to be better than the status quo and nothing can be worse. yet, idzik was a joke, mccagnan stunk and somehow douglas was worse than both of them. i mean, it seemed impossible they could hire a coach worse than gase, but saleh came along. what i’m saying is again is nothing can be worse than jd/saleh but i just know the jets will make it happen somehow.

There's simply no way it can happen....but Rex Ryan REALLY wants to be the coach of the Jets again.

Dude still refers to the team as "We". He was fired like 11 years ago.

Again....there's no way.....but man would it be something to watch. Considering the crappy candidate they're probably gonna have to settle for (Given the trainwreck that's currently in progress with the front office), I might actually watch some games if they brought him back.

Yeah. I also heard that Chris and Rodgers are good friends so if Woody doen't cut him before he heads off to wherever, Chris may keep him another year.

Asinine and would be an all time Jets move. The guy was irrelevant when he ran out of Mangini's players 2 years into his tenure here. Fired from Buffalo and has done nothing since other than get bad veneers and become a talking head for The Mouse. What connections does he have to any coaches or players left in the league? Yet morons like Joe B will pound this drum and the general dodo fanbase well be like "derrr sure, why not?"

Its like that ex from a long time ago - time has passed where you forget exactly why you broke up.

Those 1st two Rex yrs were amazing - the guy could coach some defense but clueless on offense and the non-stop circus got out of control.

That's what The Jets need
Keep The Diva qb
Hire Rex Ryan
Might as well have Johnson sell the team to Dan Snyder while they're at it

There's a reason why the Broncos paid Sean Payton 18M a year. A dude like that can turn things around quickly.

I'm not saying the Broncos are Super Bowl contenders, but they look like a legitimate team with a chance to win every Sunday.

Is it a money thing? Does Jets ownership do things on the cheap? Or do they just pick the wrong guys? (or both)

Is part of it also that the Giants are terrible? If the "other team in town" were kicking *** would the Jets be 'pressured' into doing things differently?
