Indefinite New York Jets Official thread - **2025 season** - The indefinite rebuild continues (9 Viewers)

the question on rodgers is, if he retires he loses what, $24mill? otherwise, he has a cap hit of that amount? so, is he enough of a tool to hang on for his money and force a jest decision?
In his defense he might really love the game of football and want to keep playing.
Even Brady knew when to finally hang it up. I mean, Brady is 1000 times better than Rodgers right now.

Listening to a bunch of podcasts - heard a name that actually made me interested and should be very possible. John Gruden. Offensive coach with HC/playoff/SB experience. Looking to get back in the mix after the Raider mess. Enough time has passed from his issues - perhaps he and Woody are desperate enough. Id rather go this route than yet another young coordinator - thoughts?

No. His Raiders drafts with Mayock were the worst in NFL memory.
true but he also put together some other nice teams - if not him who would get you excited that is realistic?

He put together one playoff and then they were horrible because of horrible drafting that they still can’t shake. It was that bad. Check the Raiders thread. See their picks.

I'd be hesitant to go with an old school coach who the game has probably passed by and who may not be able to relate to today's players. The young coordinator route hasn't worked either, but probably because they're going after the wrong one.

I'd love to see them make a play for Ben Johnson if he's available, but not sure he'd want the job.
This is possible, but it also seems to be trending in the right direction for Denver with the Nix/Sean Payton combo.

I just want someone who will sit down after offensive drives and coach the freaking QB. Don't believe we've ever seen that.

In no particular order:
'retreads' with offensive pedigree
Gruden
Kingsbury
*Stefanski - I'd hire him in a heartbeat if Cle dumped him. (also would be a very Jetsian move optically, a la Cleveland hiring our failed HC in Mangini. Bad teams exchanging players and coaches etc.)

'retread' defensive coach
Vrabel
Spags - doubt he comes here, likely knows better.

1st time OC
Monken
Ben Johnson
Bobby Slowik (apparently grew up a Jets fan, but some of his shine might be wearing off with Stroud's regression)
Brady
Coen

Can't imagine Johnson having any interest whatsoever in coming here but he's probably the top of my list at the moment.

Chalk is Aaron Glenn for obvious reasons.

Cimini just wrote an article predicting Matt Nagy will be the next HC of NYJ.....excuse me while I go puke for even reading that as a possibility
Was it a satire? Assuming he's serious, I'm guessing part of it is that the NYJ job is one of the worst in the league. While that's true, and it probably means candidates like Johnson won't be interested, but they still won't have to hire Nagy. They can do better.

To keep you a little sane, we don’t even know if Douglas survives as GM and generally the GM should be hiring the next HC. I get it’s the Jets, and anything can happen but I honestly don’t even think they’ve started the process of finding the next HC. Heck Ulbrich coming back is probably still on the table after they win a few games to end the season .

The latest I've been reading is that Adams only agreed to come to the Jets if they assured him that Rodgers would be there the next season as well. So now either the Jets will look like liars or Rodgers will be asked back.

I wont say that I'll stop being a fan if Rodgers comes back - but I would surely not care about next season and wouldn't waste my time watching their games exclusively - would likely stick with RedZone.

KC signs the Jets kicker - JD inexplicably left him on the practice squad so KC poached him after the Butker injury.....not a good look

So I'm texting with a friend who was vacationing in Asia for a month. He was excited when we kicked the fg to go up 5 with under 3 minutes to go.

I said, "You've been away a while, but I've seen this movie before. Just fast forward to Rodgers getting sacked to end the game after Indy scores a td and our fantastic use of timeouts strikes again".

After Rodgers gets sacked and the Jets lose, my friend says: "Do you have the winning lottery numbers"?

I say, "I'm not exactly Nostradamus. Just someone who has watched them lately".

That's all I have. Oh except for that play-call 4th and 1 run by Conklin was not my "How the Jets Suck" bingo card.

The latest talk is that Douglas is stepping down after the season (likely because Woody goes around him). Now I’m fine with it. I kind of like what he tried to do but bottom line in a results based league he doesn’t have the results. But it does speak to further dysfunction and makes it hard to believe anyone that has a choice will choose this job.

I’ve often been one of the more optimistic fans in here but it’s really difficult to see a light at the end of the tunnel here. If anything the train is coming at us in the tunnel.

You just have to laugh at this point. Dumpster fire doesn't even begin to describe it.

I know that in theory, kicking that late FG to go up 5 was the "right move" (especially against a raw rookie QB that has already been benched this year) but this defense has melted down late time and time again. IMO, they should have gone for it to try for the TD and a 2 score lead. You're 3-7 (now 3-8). What's the risk?

Rodgers looks completely shot at this point. Constantly missing spots. Wont throw it deep. Not feeling the pocket properly. He needs to go, regardless of the cap implications. Just start the "rebuild". Its not gonna work.

On a positive note, the O-line has actually played pretty well since the rough start. Obviously Olu needs to be in there the rest of the season (regardless of whether Smith gets healthy).

The D just never makes plays when they need to. Sauce continues to stink. Teams are targeting Clemens on run plays (yet he continues to play like every snap). Just awful.

Lots of hard decisions to make this off-season. You gonna pay Sauce? Garrett? Hall (who you have to decide on sooner since he wasn't a first rounder). 5th year on AVT?

Obviously all the coaches and Douglas have to be gone at this point. Douglas has made plenty of good talent evals at non-qb positions but at this point, your record is what you are.

Random thoughts on the game from watching this mess in person

Apathy has set in - no shows started and its going to get worse. Woody is going to have to endure 3 more home games of angry mob fans

QB - Rodgers - he's shot. He doesnt throw any passes down the field. The system is covering for him. I know he'd be giving up a lot of cash but hes hurting his legacy at this point. If he doesnt retire then they should make it clear hes nothing more than a bridge QB for one year while they must draft a QB. The days of him having any influence on coaches/roster, etc must be over

RB Its not rocket science - give Breece room to run and he makes plays. Run him up the middle and he is not good.

WR - Short routes took away most of GW. Devante has moments but just not enough. Dont know why they dont work Corley in some.

Def - run D was excellent. Completely shut down Taylor. Pass d was brutal. Sauce took a monster step back this year - to the point Im nervous to extend him which is shocking.

ST - new kicker was solid - more evidence to get rid of Z

Coaching - awful. Ulrich exposed as essentially a helper where Saleh was the true DC. so they basically got rid of the HC/DC and replaced with a position coach as HC. Awful move.

As for long term -

GM - Im not going to lie. I liked a lot of the moved JD did but his record speaks for itself. He is one of worst records as GM in NFL history and doesnt deserve another shot. Time to rebuild with new group. At this point they should pull the plug before end of season so they can get started early.

HC - Begging for an offensive coach to develop a new QB. I like Vrable but just cant justify another defensive minded coach. No shot at Ben Johnson so not sure who else is possible out there but not optimistic.

Draft - Back to tankathon - #7 and rising. dont have to root for a tank like most yrs as they just tank on own! They should only be favored over Jax rest of season - could you imagine if out of all the awful Jet teams over the past 25 yrs the one with Arod and a "stacked" team nabs the #1 pick? Would be tragically comical - and possible!

I agree with the growing sentiment that they need a president of football operations and a more well-defined higharchy. Woody needs to hire someone and then step away and let them run it.

Well Woody will be likely leaving for 4 yrs - I dont think Chris Johnson is as meddlesome as Woody so that should help - though he was naive enough to get influenced by Peyton Manning of all people....just dont know what kind of candidates they can attract in the current state. Most likely an up and comer looking for a shot vs an established person

Benigno and Evan now all in on Brian Flores of all people - calling him Tomlin jr. No thanks - its time for a non Gase/Kotite offensive coach!

There was a study done, I may have posted it in this thread that found that when NFL players return from achilles tears, the first year back they have reduced performance, but the next season, they return to their previous injury form. I'd bet Rodgers is better next season if he returns.

How many subjects were 40+ years old and played for the Jets?

Sticking with Rodgers while cleaning house with a brand new CS and FO would be the most Jets thing ever. What a miserable excuse for a franchise.

its really not their call - if they cut him it would be a $30M cap hit - id be ok as long as it was clear he was a one yr bridge QB and they drafted a QB in 1st rd to sit the yr.

That's a great opportunity for an up and coming coach. Perhaps Herm Edwards is available.

And rumors of Curtis Martin as President of Football Ops? I could totally see the amazing Johnson duo pulling that one off.

Glenn will likely interview for both the Jets and the Saints. Dude deserves a shot.

Ben Johnson probably gets offers, says he wants to be the HMFIC, but he’s also really comfortable. We’ll see how picky he remains. The rumors of a $15M ask were either false or his way of saying I’m pretty happy where I’m at but you can try.

I loved Glenn when he played for the Jets. I'm sure he deserves a shot, but I hope it's with the Saints. I don't want another first time defensive head coach, but the Jets seem to love it.

As good of a story as it would be, I agree. They need an offensive mind this time around - preferably someone with experience.

That was all Al Davis, Gruden the coach had the locker room and the players buying in (minus AB)

Why would he go to the jets? Presumably he wants to work with a for a good franchise and he can be picky.
I don’t like the idea but I’d be curious to see if he can fix Trevor Lawrence.

Interesting they pull the plug now - hopefully they can get a jump start now.

JD speaks to the media twice per year - once in preseason and once during the bye this week. Im sure they didnt want him answering questions at this point.

Woody is like Robert Deniro in Good Fellas after the heist wacking everyone connected to the job - its a mess.
