Indefinite New York Jets Official thread - **2025 season** - The indefinite rebuild continues (2 Viewers)

Still no GM? I like Glenn, but this seems like the backwards way of doing things.

I don't think it really matters. I guess they identified Glenn as the guy they had to have to change the culture of the team. The searches were done concurrently, so whatever GM candidates that they are looking at it must have indicated that they would like to work with Glenn. Vrabel, Johnson, and Glenn were the consensus leading candidates for most teams.

As bad as things are for us, imagine being a Jags fan. They are interviewing for coaches, but only after doing so, they realize that their GM is a detriment to the coaching hire. Now they fire their GM after conducting their interviews. What a s-show. They wanted Coen, but he said no thanks. I hope they end up with phony Saleh.
khaaan!!!!!!!!! makes woody look like george halas.

Good luck Coach. Who's your QB?
Early rumors are he wants to run it back with Rodgers - as long as they draft/develop a young QB as well im fine with that.
Given what's out there, I don't think there is really any other option than go with Rodgers and hope a rookie QB can develop. Unless they find lightning in a bottle though, they'll likely be in the market next year for the QB of the present and future.

ETA: something tells me they're going to sign Fields, who Glenn faced when both were in the NFC Norris division, as a potential reclamation project

I don't mind that at all as long as they take shots at a developmental QB as well AND they make sure that whatever the hell is going on with Wilson and Rodgers is worked out. At best Rodgers has another year, you want Wilson here long term. From Glenn's perspective having Rodgers at QB gives him a chance to have a solid season and change the culture almost immediately. Without Rodgers I just don't see who the options are at QB that allows them to be much more than they were this year or have been for over a decade now. Glenn will outlast Rodgers either way, so it's a low risk move for him TBH. Not like Saleh/Douglas where their fates were tied to Rodgers' success.

it would be nice if a GM would make the QB determination. like, are they thinking they can be competitive in 2025? or are they just gonna bite the bullet and go for 2026? and who is making that call, the coach, owner, gm or woody’s kids’ computer?

one of the many issues i have with the jest is how the gm and coach report separately in the chain of command. it leaves a lot of backstabbing and these 2 guys being out for themselves instead of being tied together. this is a big reason this team fails.
On paper, yes 100%. But in fairness to this most recent outstanding regime - JD and Saleh really didn't feel like they had that disconnect professionally and certainly not personally despite that paradigm. JD wasn't even the one who fired Saleh, and apparently Saleh was very upset when he found out they fired JD too. Having said that, JD was part of the hiring process for Saleh (quite the concept!) so that likely contributed to them having some personal allegiances towards each other even as Woody gradually injected himself into the mix as the tenure wore on.
Ah memories
Seeing those 2 little s-bags Brick and Brack in the draft room just made me so angry.

Another year of Rodgers ... great. This team is going nowhere.
Not sure there are better options out there. Whats realistic?

No $ for a FA QB and not really high on Darnold/Fields anyway. Not drafting high enough for a top QB - with the right coaching/kicking they should have won 8-9 games last year. draft a QB on day 2 and let him sit for a year watching a pro like Rodgers seems like the best scenario to me.

Just to show you how flimsy my stance is on this, (lol) I saw a counterpoint on twitter that made sense to me. It will be that much harder for Glenn to put his stamp on the team and specifically the offense if Rodgers is around. Is he really going to learn a new system at 40+? As long as he's here he's larger than life even if he doesn't try to be and his regular appearances on McAfee will always provide noise for the HC to deal with.

"Better options" for what? Maybe the plan should be to go all in for the #1 pick next season. Trying to get to 8 wins seems like a foolish venture.

8 wins would be the best Jets record in a decade!

They can't contend for the #1 pick even when they are truly awful - this team has enough solid players to contend for a playoff spot now with Rodgers and good coaching. That would be a huge culture change if they could just play meaningful games past Thxgivining. I dont think the team needs to bottom out and "tank" - of course Rodgers would need to be on board.

I was more okay with running it back with Rodgers a month ago. I'm less enamored of that option now. Having a chance to go back and watch some young Rodgers vs. old Rodgers is like night and day. It's not even close. I know we say we know that, but until you've looked at video again and been honest about what your eyes are telling you, you don't really know that. But, sheesh, it's glaring.

So what then to do? I don't know. I'd love to be in the market for Fields and see what we could get if we kicked those tires a bit, and I'm no Fields backer. That tells you how bad the options are. Which leads me right back to Tyrod Taylor and Aaron Rodgers. Perhaps we do run it back. I don't know what to say. We weren't getting a quarterback in the draft this year. It just wasn't happening. Whether Rodgers played or not, we weren't getting one. Taylor gets you to four or five wins and you're out of the sweepstakes for Cam Ward or Shadeur Sanders (who brings along Deion and all his distractions).

Oof. Bad year to need a QB, huh? Too bad we didn't do that smart thing and take McCarthy or Nix when we had the chance. Not sure when we're going to learn, but either of those guys would look pretty sweet in Jets green next year.

Exactly my thoughts. What are they trying to accomplish by keeping Rodgers? They aren't a super bowl contender with him and there's clearly issues in the locker room with him given that Wilson has said he wants to be traded. They're better off moving on, even if they're starting a QB they drafted in the 2nd round. Rodgers isn't the mentor type or the leader type so without being a super bowl contender, there's no positive value in keeping him around.

All of that said, Woody really is dumb enough to think that by keeping Rodgers they should be going to the super bowl. There's no GM yet to work with so there's a lot still going on, but the fact that they haven't hired a GM yet highlights the structure Woody has put in place and how dysfunctional it is.

It's never a good year to need a QB, especially for the Jets. Just keep taking swings at it until you find the right guy. I don't think the rest of the team is as bad off as some might believe. There is young talent at key positions all over this roster.

In my opinion, only results matter and they both sucked.

You don't always get to choose who you work with. Hell, for the rest of us, we certainly don't. Sometimes being on the same page is actually an impediment. Sometimes having opposed thoughts brings out the best in us. That said, it hasn't worked in any fashion so far probably thanks to Woodrow - moreso with his bad hires than his meddling.

One thing to note, we have had some of the worst coaching staffs regardless of head coach and gm. People hiring their buddies. We had Hackett and Loggains for god sakes. How many coordinators and QB coaches have we had? Tons of bums.

Glenn seems well respected and connected. It sounds like he is trying to put together a decent coaching staff, so that's an upgrade over the piles of crap that we have rotated over the years. That gives me some hope.

They have a GM, it just can't be made official until Washington is eliminated.

I'd love a Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Jordan Travis QB room next season - I'm not 100% convinced Fields is a franchise QB but at least he'd be fun to watch and his running ability would help Hall and Allen find running room.

QB is going to be the big story of course. I think Rodgers goes another year - he's already said he would work on a pay cut which could help that monster 2026 cap hit.

I could live with Fields and Tyrod for a year but Id rather draft a new project as Travis is still not healthy over a year after his injury.

[Anderson] Breaking: A high-level league source tells me Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey is getting the Jets GM job.

Dont know much about him but supposedly strong scouting background - if he had a hand in Bo Nix and Denver's quick turnaround after Russell Wilson disaster Im ok with it

I wonder if the process included him meeting Glenn to make sure they're on the same page. I haven't gotten the impression that's what they're doing but hopefully I'm wrong.

Im sure Glen approved - I like that they went with the scouting background vs the cap guru. Cap experts can be hired...

Mougey and Glenn have not worked together before but Mougey was involved in interviewing Glenn for the Broncos head coaching job in 2022.

Roles were reversed on Thursday with Glenn now interviewing Mougey for the GM job.

lol

As long as Mougey wasn't the guy with the bright idea of the Broncos acquiring Russ and putting them in cap hell you guys should be fine.

Actually the guy has had an interesting run up through their org. Guy who got his foot in the door and was able to take advantage of opportunities as they came up.

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn introductory press conference recap:

- New GM Darren Mougey tells a story about the Broncos interviewing Aaron Glenn a couple years back. Mougey said each candidate was asked what their first team meeting would look like and Glenn actually gave his planned speech to the room interviewing him. Mougey said it powerful and passionate.

- Glenn opens with a joke about how he wears glasses now.

- AG said his biggest influence was his parents, starting with his late father, who instilled his work ethic. Said his mother was nurturing, made sacrifices and taught him how to lay down the law. Thanks his wife and kids, who he said they are as capable as coaching as him. "We are a football family."

- Thanks Bill Parcells, calls him the best to ever coach the game. Al Groh, who AG said he continues to visit every year to shape his football acumen. Sean Payton taught him what sustained winning looks like. Said he learned how to take a team from the bottom to the top in Detroit with Dan Campbell.

- Tells current Jets players to "put your seat belts on and get ready for the ride." Drops a "We're the New York Jets and we're built for this ****."

- Said the Jets was the only job he wanted and it's why he picked to take a second interview with them first.

- Before Q&A, AG said he and the GM will talk about Aaron Rodgers. Good effort to get ahead of it, but the questions are certainly going to come from gathered media regardless.

- LOL, first question is about Rodgers. AG said and Mougey need to take their time to go through the roster and won't rush their decisions.

- AG asked what drew him to New York. He said this is where he started, as a player, a scout and a head coach. Hopes to make this his last stop.

- AG said culture is about people and getting the right people in the building. Saw that for the first time under Parcells.

- AG says accountability starts with responsibility. Says it's his job to make sure players to know their responsibility first and foremost. That way, they'll know when they fall short.

- AG success/wins comes from the small thing. Details, playing smart, situational awareness.

- AG tells how his post-career path developed. Said he took two years off after retiring to give everything to his family, but when he was getting agitated watching a game, "cursing at his TV," his wife told him, "Baby, go coach." AG said that was a weight off his shoulders. He thought he wanted to be a business man, but he's a football lifer. He called Parcells and told him he wanted to coach and Parcells said, 'You're going to scout." Parcells told him the best coaches are the ones who are the best evaluators. AG said it's the best advice he could have gotten.

My favorite was he is still upset about losing to Denver after leading 10-0 at half of AFCCG in late 90s - "Ill be damned not to get that back!"
Ugh - remember that game like it was yesterday. After Blake Spence blocked that punt at the Broncos goal line and then Curtis Martin ran it in the next play to make it 10-0, thought we were in business.

Me and the three friends (we were season ticket holders together at the time) watching at one of our houses started looking into tickets, airfare and hotels for the Super Bowl at halftime - that did not end well.

The kickoff in the 2d half just stopped mid air and dropped in for a fumble - its like the football gods said nope Joe willy owes us - completely turned the game around. Brutal loss as they would have definitely beaten the Falcons that year and won the SB.

The fact that it still bothers AG is the kind of thing you want to see - its like getting rex who loves the Jets without the circus and actually coaching the last decade lol. I knoe people compare AG to Saleh but from what I see AG is much better. He is definitely a motivator and players coach to a certain extent but talked about dropping the hammer and discipline which was not Saleh's strong suit. Also seems like he will be a CEO coach and not concentrate on the Def which really hurt the last few HCs they brought in - this is where bringing in a former HC like Wilkes would help.

I know Jets are champions of the offseason but I really like what Ive seen - the team has a good base., No reason they need to do another rebuild. If AG is the real deal and puts together a solid staff they can be playing meaningful games in December as soon as next season

As far as the press conference goes, yeah, I don't really care about press conferences anymore. As long as it's not as bad as the Gase presser. Jesus what a disaster that was.

Glenn seems to want to be here and has the fire to want to succeed.

The Moog - well, he seemed a bit meek, but it doesn't matter. Just do the job well behind the scenes. That fat bum JD only did one presser a year and never said much of importance anyway.

Woody still dials up the cringe factor without even trying.

The Press - I don't recall them asking about the coaching staff, but they only lob softballs anyway.

Step 1: Figuring out what to do about Rodgers and the QB position this year.

Looks like it will be a long shot to land Nick Caley from the Rams - has interviews lined up with TB and Hou - way better situations than here.

Buzz for Det Tanner Engstrand - been with Det 5 yrs - last 2 as the pass game coordinator - obviously an unknown rookie but AG knows him well. If they couldnt get Ben Johnson than why not one of his top guys I suppose - Det passing game was pretty evolved. Passed over as new OC in Det for Morton which is a bit concerning but Campbell supposedly has long connection to Morton.

Wilkes still the leader at DC.

Mark Brunell seemed like a logical choice, has he not been getting any mention at all?

He was mentioned early but think as QB coach he has less of a pedigree as the pass game coordinator - frankly im ok with anyone associated with the Det offensive coaching staff!

Speaking of former Lions coaches, this guy was just a backup QB a few years ago:

love former QBs on the Offensive staff - working and developing the rookie MVP cant hurt!
