Indefinite Tampa Bay Bucs thread: Somehow not on the list of teams to never have won a Super Bowl (2 Viewers)

I really hope they don't screw it up. I would like to see Evans with a good QB for years to come. He is an exciting player to watch with a high ceiling.

For sake of discussion, let's say they don't go QB. Where do they go?

Of the top rated D linemen, Leonard Williams & Randy Gregory, Gregory probably fits our scheme better, but I think Williams is a beast. This defense could be really good with another elite pass rusher.

There is an OT from ND & one from Iowa that are mocked in the top 10. They could be options if we trade back a few picks. However, they may want to try out Dotson at LT and fill RT in FA. Then draft a few interior guys in the mid-rounds.

 
Collins to RT? Still $3M in dead money for next year, so they can't cut him.

The first thing they need to do is find a competent offensive coordinator. If they somehow manage to end up with the #1 pick you get the guy best suited to run an offense tailored to Mariota's strengths.

For sake of discussion, let's say they don't go QB. Where do they go?

If they have the opportunity to draft one of these QB's how they can pass it up?

 
Unfortunately, we cold probably find someone to play RT better than Collins for under 3 mil. He is that bad. Let's see if they experiment with him over there the last 2 games.

I don't think you can pass on QB but I think it is a losing proposition with the state of this O-line. The fact that there isn't a clear cut #1 QB makes it that much more difficult of a pick.

It's not ideal but if a QB has a top grade you have no choice.

You don't need to spend top picks to build a line.

He's owed $3M no matter what, so he's depth at worst for 2015.

Draft a QB and then spend the rest of the picks on offensive/defensive linemen. With the history of horrible QB play for this franchise I don't see how they could justify passing on Winston or Mariota with a top 3 pick despite their flaws. I'm skeptical they'll be able to develop whoever it is, but they have to try.

 
Our next OC is likely coaching for another NFL team right now. I don't think they can afford to risk missing on a college coach. We need someone experienced in developing a QB if we are going to draft a rookie.

 
I think most of the Cowboys coaches contracts are up after this season. It will be in interesting to see if Lovie can lure Marinelli. Morningweg, Phillibin, Roman Oben are some other names that could come up.

 
Part of the reason bad franchises get stuck in ruts is due to the constant change in coaching philosophy. The halfass change into Teddords zone blocking offense that we never got to see, was a drastic change from what Schiano was trying to do. We moved all of our run 1st linemen in an attempt to get more athletic ones. Now we are stuck with no identity on offense, and lacking the personel to execute ANY base offense effectively.

Despite Lovie having "final say" I think he allowed Tedford to make the personel moves on o. This could explain the rumors that Lovie was upset with Tedford. Tedford started building this thing, and left Lovie hanging.

Lovie can't afford to have his fate tied to an offensive coordinator 1 more time. He needs to start making all of the decisions. I think if he sticks with Arroyo, then that will be precisely what he is doing.

I like Lovie just fine as a leader of men and a defensive head coach, but he most certainly does not need to be making final decisions regarding offensive philosophy or offensive personnel.

We have already seen that experiment blow up in our faces. McCown could not possibly have been Tedford's first choice to run his offense. Clearly Lovie made that call. I imagine Tedford knew immediately how that decision was going to work out and he made sure to jump ship before the #### hit the fan. His physical ailments made a convenient excuse. Why tie your reputation and career to a QB you don't get to hand pick?

This team needs a legitimate offensive coordinator, and that man should get to hand pick the QB he wants with their first selection in the 2015 draft.

 
Maybe McCown was Lovies pick, but I think all the offensive line shuffling was Tedford. Collins was a downgrade to Penn, and Zuttah is looking like a stud in Baltimore.

That's possible. The entire draft was offensive players as well. What I do know is Tedford must have been extremely unhappy about the way things transpired because he made no attempt to come back after his medical issues and his agent has made it known he is available for job openings.

 
Penn and Zuttah were horrible last year. Particularly Penn. Don't use hindsight to present a picture that wasn't there.

 
I get them thinking they could basically swap Collins for Penn, but Zuttah was a decent and versatile inside linemen. They traded him for a 5th round pick this year when they were really thin.

Anyways, the question now is if they get a guy that continues to try and build for a zone blocking scheme, or a more traditional blocking system.

 
Man Evans was open deep multiple times today and McCown just couldn't get it there. One time it looked like he threw a punt down there.

Can't wait to see him with a real QB in the future.

 
Our defense looked ok without McCoy. I don't think the defense is too far off. I think Lovie can get us where we need to be with sprinkling in a couple mid tier FA's, and maybe some late round draft picks.

Our 2nd round pick (likely #34 overall) and 3rd round pick (prob. #67 oveeall) are high enough picks where we should still be able to land top O-line prospects.

The defense is where they need to be. They've been an extremely solid unit since the bye week. I expected them to get lit up yesterday, but they played well again.

The best case scenario is for them to end up with the #1 pick and hope Philly/Chip Kelly throws Nick Foles and a boatload of picks at Mariota.

Winston will pursue a more lucrative and longer lasting baseball career while MM goes back to school in search of a title for the Ducks. :mellow:

I honest to God cannot believe they just dont throw Glennon in there to see what he can do. Whats the point of trotting McCown out there?

I really dont think Glennon is all that bad he just needs reps. Accurate passer when given time.

 
I wouldn't write Glennon off yet, but, if he isn't the answer, then they have to use this high pick to secure a QB of the future. McCown is garbage and past Glennon they don't have much. High picks like this (hopefully) will be a rare occurrence, so they have to use it to get their QB by draft or trade or whatever. Past that, OLine is clearly a need, but I'd just like to see a solid draft with players who will still be starters 2-3 years from now. Too many busts from recent drafts.

There was some speculation on Twitter by sports writers in the area that they aren't playing Glennon because the offense is atrocious and they want to protect him as a trade asset.

McCown was hand picked by Lovie who is stubborn and loyal to a fault. As I mentioned before I believe this to be the reason Tedford is no longer with the team. I think he preferred Glennon and was overruled.

He was recently named the Head Coach of the B.C. Lions in the CFL.

TAMPA — Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford indicated Friday that he was healthy enough to resume his coaching duties with the team as far back as October.

“I had to make sure I went through the proper rehabilitation period, but I’ve been good to go for a couple of months now and I feel great,’’ the 56-year-old Tedford told reporters during his official introduction as the new head coach of the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. “I’m exercising, eating right, doing all those things, and I have as much energy now as I’ve ever had.’’
Tedford’s comments came two weeks after the Bucs agreed to relieve him of his contractual obligation to the team in the wake of a year in which he never coached a regular-season game.
Tedford last ran the Bucs’ offense during an Aug. 23 preseason game in Buffalo, but a heart procedure performed two days later resulted in Tedford asking for and receiving an indefinite leave of absence on Sept. 23.
“It was a temporary setback where I had a little heart issue and I had two stents put in,” Tedford told Vancouver-area reports. “I feel very fortunate that we caught it when we did and that I didn’t have some catastrophe. It was a warning sign, for sure, to say, ‘Hey, wake up and look after what you’re doing.’ But that won’t affect the way I work or the way I coach.”
A career college coach who spent 10 years as head coach at the University of California, Tedford was an NFL rookie whose plans in Tampa called for him to install an up-tempo attack similar to that run by Chip Kelly in Philadelphia.
Most of the elements of his scheme were lost during his absence, however, and the Bucs have suffered as a result. With NFL rookie quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo taking on the added role of play caller, the Bucs (2-12) have struggled to move the ball and score points.
They will go into their game Sunday against Green Bay today ranked 30th overall in the 32-team in league in total offense (305.9 yards per game), including 29th in rushing (84.0 ypg), 18th in passing (221.9 ypg) and 27th in points per game (18.1).

This franchise needs to decide what they want to be on offense, sign an OC who fits that philosophy, draft players who specifically fit that scheme, and then stick with it. Changing the QB and coaching staff every two seasons is a recipe for disaster.

terrible is a stretch, he is a ton younger than McCown and has a more promising future. If you are getting pummeled starting JM why not roll the dice on a younger player that may actually develop. Glennon, while not mobile at all, can make all the throws, has good accuracy and just needs more reps IMO.

Glennon is absolutely NOT terrible. He's not good by any means, probably not even above average...but he's still better than McCown and still very young. He'll be a career #2, and probably one of the better ones at that.

 
I wonder what Glennon value would be? It was rumored a 2-3 round pick last season. I'm not sure if his value has increased, decreased, or stayed about the same.

My guess is they would jump at the offer of a 3rd round pick for him.

At this point it doesn't really matter, but it stands to reason you start the guy in his second year over the 35 year old career journeyman.

The "he gives us the best chance to win" BS is completely ludicrous. McCown is the worst starting QB in the NFL. Signing him to be the unquestioned starter was asinine, and continuing to start him makes me think Lovie is senile.

Or a genius? Protect Glennon's value as a trade chip and tank for a top 2 pick. That's the only way it makes sense. :shrug:

 
Honestly, it's amazing to me they're in the position to land the #1 pick. Just think of all the money they've spent on free agents and trades in the past three off-seasons.

Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, Eric Wright. Dashon Goldson. They traded for Revis. Anthony Collins, Michael Johnson, Alterraun Verner. Traded for Mankins. I'm probably forgetting others...

That being said, it's so depressing to look at their draft history, which is why they've been horrible. Nobody from the 2007 draft is even in the NFL anymore, and I think a couple of them might be dead. Nobody from 08 or 09 is on the team. McCoy is the only guy still here from 2010. Clayborn and Bowers are bust city from 2011. Passed on Keuchly for Barron in 2012. Martin looks like he might be the next Buc rookie tease.
