Injury Clusters (1 Viewer)

Last year the Packers saw injuries at an absolutely inordinate rate. Fine, we all know such matters fluctuate from year to year. Statistical variance can be a ##### when it bites your team. That said, the Packers had some unusual injuries including Ahman Green's torn Quadraqcepts. I don't recall the last time I heard of a player getting that injury.

Fast forward to this year's minicamp. The main story flowing out of that camp was that Aaron Rogers was not as inept as earlier reported followed by massively long injury lists, including Kevin Barry having torn his quad.

Now statistical variance is one thing, but that, coupled with improbable coincidence of a rarte injury reoccuring at least raises the question of whether the Packers are doing something wrong in their strength and conditioning program.l

So my question is, are they doing something wrong?

Dunno about the Packers, but I'd be interested in seeing a study on the Patriots. Every year people talk about all the injuries they managed to overcome to get where they got. I'd like to hear people begin talking about WHY they had so many injuries in the first place. And if it turns out that the injuries they faced weren't abnormal, then I'd like to hear the media shut up about them.Edit: I think the Packers were probably a one-year anomoly, sort of like Carolina in 2004. The Patriots are the only team I can think of off the top of my head that has had 2 or 3 consecutive years of whine-inducing injuries.

Yes! A good friend of mine and I often argue about who should is "responsible" when this, that and the other goes wrong with NFL teams, but we both strongly agree that the strength and conditioning coach should get some flak when rashes of muscle injuries like pulls, strains and tears occur. It's sort of ridiculous that this doesn't get more attention. Rather, what happens is that a player starts getting recognized as being "injury-prone" after he misses a game or two.

Mike McCarthy fired Mike Sherman's strength and conditioning coach, Barry Rubin, and hired a new guy. McCarthy also overhauled the weight room and was reportedly amazed that the Packers weight room relied so heavily on machines, rather than free weights, which are the norm in the NFL and anywhere else where strenght and conditioning are taken seriously. Other than that tidbit, I have no answer to the question.

Given the nature of the machines vs. benefits of free weights, this is a major surprise to me. There is a place for machines, but it is not in a sports team's weight room, at least to any significant degree. Are we going to hear next that the Packers did all of their running on treadmills?

My high school team knew this. All free weights.

Santana Dotson had this injury as well as Steve Warren. The Packers have revamped their conditional program this season to include a bunch of Free Weights instead of machines. Rock Gullickson is their new guy. Here is an article on him.
