(Insert Team Name) Nation (1 Viewer)

Can anyone fill me in on why, all of the sudden, every fan base in the NFL and many other sports are referred to as (Insert Team Name) Nation? Since the late 80s, the only time I really remember this being thrown around was for the Raider Nation, but I am an Oakland fan so maybe I was just seeing it in the context of my team's own media coverage. Originally I thought it was a reference to the unusually widespread (for a small market like Oakland) and diverse (international fans and just crazies from small towns) fan base in Oakland, but now I am starting to wonder if it is just a moniker that all teams have been using for a long time and it has just now become more of a buzzword in the national media?

Cardinal Nation?

Steeler Nation?

Texas Tech Red Raider Nation?

San Diego State Aztec Nation?

Coolridge High School Wombat Nation?

I am not trying to bash any fan base; it is just something I was curious about and things are kind of slow right now until camp starts.

I think you're right. All I can remember for years was Raider Nation. The first team I can hear of that co-opted it was the Red Sox when they went on their tear a few years back. Now it's out of control.

I liked it much better when it was just Raider Nation (although it was a trifle annoying).

Most of the references on the website now say "Bengals Fan Connection" but when you go to a specific state it still does in fact say Bengals Nation on the top of the screen.

Who Dey!

I don't know the history, but Steeler Nation seems to have been around for a while now, and a worthy description of the fan base. To be honest other then the Raiders I don’t ever hear it used in reference to any other football fan bases. Red Sox nation I hear, but not other football teams.

GroveDiesel Nation here, I don't see a problem with it.

(Ok, it's actually really dumb. Raider Nation can call itself that. Everybody else is just a copycat.)

The reason that it has become so watered down is simple....THE RAIDERS SUCK!!!!!!!

So the powers that be decided to try real teams like the Steelers and others ( the Cardinals were the result of all the hype from the last couple of years). If your saying RAIDERNATION it's basically saying France Rules!

Edited for my mistake

Settle down henry. :bannable:Jagnation baby. :welcome:

I have a problem with all of the following:

eternal damnation, donation, stagnation, vertical combination, condemnation, consternation, coronation, culmination, designation, predestination, detonation, star divination, domination (except when the Chargers do it), emanation, explanation, fascination, germination, hibernation, impregnation, angle of inclination, indignation, intonation, machination, nomination, ordination, pollination, resignation, ru8mination, termination, vaccination, abomination, alienation, character assassination, decontamination, coordination, decaffeination, non-denomination, desalination, self-determination, antidiscrimination, disinclination, dissemination, reasoning by elimination, re-examination, racial extermination, hallucination, dark field illumination, imagination, impersonation, incrimination, indoctrination, artificial insemination, origination, procrastination, reincarnation, rejuvenation, and insubordination

no ####.

i'm also a member of the red sox nation. the only 2 i recognize. i work with 2 DIEHARD born & bred steeler fans & they NEVER refer to themselves as such. i mention them because i think a minimal requirement for the 'nation' status is that your team apparel be at the top of all sales & that when your team is on the road, there are times where you overtake the stadium. the steelers do this in punk ### cities like san diego, where the raiders also dominate.

I guess now we know where the slogan "An Army of One" came from.

Brilliant.

The Steelers have been using the term "Steeler Nation" since the 70's.

No team's fans travel better! That is a FACT.

I would agree about the Steeler's traveling well. I was at the Colts vs Steelers MNF in Indianapolis two years ago, and the Steelers fans had completely taken over the RCA Dome.

Let's just all agree that teams that had a good deal of success in the '70s have the most ardent and annoying fan bases.

Better than "The Big Red" as they were known in St. Louis. Of course "the little red" was the baseball Cardinals - A name that you will never hear used.

:banned: Agreed. However, I don't recall the Broncos having that much success in the 70's. Yet their fans are still annoying.I need to get a Calvin whizzing on Elway sticker.

How'd that game turnout for the Steelers? :goodposting: I remember how much fun it was to wave at the Steeler fans as they left early! But, they do travel well.

Red Sox nation was coined during the 1986 run, and then popularized in a 1996 Shaughnessy book.

I've been annoyed by how many teams seemingly latched on to the term, but last night really killed me...

On the Seattle broadcast of the Sox/Mariners game, the usually large sox contingency began another deafening round of "Let's - go - red - sox" chant, when, as usual, a few local fans will get annoyed and scream "<insert home team here>" after the rest of the crowd does the "Let's go" part. As is, it is all fun and games at the park, but when the blowhard Mariners play-by-play guy claimed that "Mariner nation was really making it tough for the red sox" i puked a little in my mouth. Mariner nation?

How'd the rematch go? The local bandwagon jumpers kept us from getting tickets. ;) :lmao:

It's a pretty stupid, bandwagon-type habit that lame fans have picked up, so I have to assume Jim Rome had something to do with it.

Packer fans are just Packer Backers. We want absolutely nothing to do with anything related to the Raiders.
