Interesting Draft Day Trade Discussion (1 Viewer)

Enraged Nerfball

So I'm in my car going to get some lunch and I'm listening to Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan on Sirius Radio. Kirwan says he was speaking to a GM friend of his and this friend suggested there will be an very unusual, unexpected trade this weekend. Invites Kirwan to guess and if he's close he will let him know. So here's what Kirwan suggests:

Oakland drafts Jamarcus Russell with the first, Cleveland drafts Brady Quinn with the third pick. Then they exchange picks and Oakland picks up Cleveland's 2008 first round pick to compensate them for "trading down". The rationale given was although Oakland has Russell higher on their draft board they have many holes to fill. The question for Oakland is not if Russell has a higher upside, it's can Oakland win with Quinn. If the answer is yes, then Oakland does the deal.

I never heard what his GM friends response was but I got the idea this proposal had more going for it as a possibility than just Kirwan's imagination.

Comments?

Idiotic considering that CLE has many holes themselves. GB the week before the draft when all dumb rumors come to a head. ;)

Horrible trade on the Browns' behalf. I suspect these sort of rumors are fueled by memories of the Browns trading up with the Lions to get Kellen Winslow in which they paid a steep price. Just remember that the front office that made that move is gone.

Wait, why wouldn't they just trade picks before the draft, then?

The only reason I would guess is that the Raiders would want to be sure that Quinn was available at #3. And if they were concerned a team would move up to #2 for Quinn, it seems like they would just take Quinn at #1.

It seems risky to me to draft a QB they wouldn't want, then wait around and hope the guy they want is at #3.

Cle will not go QB with the 3rd.GM's & coach's jobs are on the line this year. They will trade the 3 pick to move down or trade for LJ, if they trade the 3rd pick they will get more than LJ from KC, if they get LJ and do not give up the 3rd they will go O-Line or if Johnson is available trade down to pick up more picks. If none of this happens they go RB or O-line(probably RB).

Word is the coach and GM want RB. And the owner wants QB.Who would you usually bet on in that instance?

I think that's the justification for waiting. There was also the comparison to the Rivers Manning trade a few years back. I believe the thinking might be that the Raiders could get a servicable QB for the future for less than first pick money, and gain a future Rd 1 pick that would arguably be, at least, in the top ten. What I don't get is how it helps the Browns.

OAK would be better off taking CJ and trading down with the Bucs. At #4 they will still get an impact player they need (Russell, Quinn or Peterson).
