iPad (1 Viewer)

I'm still not sure why people who bought an iPad 3 are upset. I bought one back in May, and when I look at the differences with the iPad 4:* Faster processor - my iPad 3 seems plenty fast, I'm not sure what the benefits of this are. Maybe in the future as applications get more advanced there would be a noticeable difference.* Lightning connector - don't want this, incompatible with the cables and accessories I already have for my iPhone and kid's iPad Touch.* Dual-band Wi-Fi - I don't even have my router set up for dual-band, my wireless performance is just fine as-is, and the only benefit to something faster would be for moving data around the house, as my cable modem speed is far below single-band Wi-Fi speed.I think that's it, unless I'm missing something.
They may still falll under the I don't give a #### category, but:* Retina display* HD FaceTime camera with stabilization* 5MP still camera (autofocus)* Sprint available* Bluetooth 4.0* LTE* Siri

As Jojo said, both have the retina display. The rest don't matter to me. And Siri is available on the iPad 3 with with iOS 6.0 update, right? (I haven't updated yet.)

Ah, my mistake. i was on the main apple ipad page, and they're actually comparing it to the 2, rather than the new.

Yeah, I tend to agree (hence the i don't give a #### reference). Love my ipad 2. Not sure on Siri. Not a heavy user of it on my 4S, so still in the IDGAS category.

This is exactly the reason why Apple stopped numbering the iPad releases; this is a relatively minor spec refresh, NOT a brand new device. Apple needs the flexibility to keep their products competitive on the spec sheet in the face of constant Android releases. Being locked into yearly refreshes is a competitive disadvantage.

No matter what Apple does they can't win. If they limit themselves to once-a-year updates, they are criticized for selling year-old technology at premium prices. If they update their products mid-cycle, they are criticized for making the previous model "obsolete" too soon.

Doubling the CPU and GPU speed is not really a minor upgrade. Going from the 2 to 3 was a minor upgrade. This is a major upgrade that just segments the Apple products more. Developers can either take advantage of the extra speed or become like Android/PC developers and code to the bottom tier devices.

So eBay instant sale gave me $200 for my iphone4 16gb AT&T. It looks like their offer for an iPad 3 wifi 32gb is $278. Such bull####.
They are selling for more on amazon.

Apple has ipad3's refurbished wifi for $379.
I just found it interesting that there was only a $78 difference between a 2 year old phone and 6 month old tablet.
Phones are subsidized.
Not by eBay instant sale. I'm talking about the value of two products. One released 2 years ago whose newest version is a large improvement and a product that is 6 months old with more storage. That's a steep drop in value in such a short time.its kind of bs by apple making the ipad3 a signature event and then sneaking the 4 in for Xmas during what was supposedly the iPad mini event. I would have waited and I suspect many others would have as well. In fact I almost didn't get the 3 because the only real improvement of significance was the retina display, but I wanted a tablet this year. Had I known the REAL upgrade was only a few months later, I would have waited.

Please. The iPad 3 added an upgraded CPU/GPU , Retina display, 5 MP camera, HD 1080p video recording, and LTE. All without sacrificing battery life and thinness. It was a complete re-engineer. This new revision simply upgraded the chipset and front camera. All the hard work and major selling points were added in the 3.You guys cried when Apple markets the 4S as a new model saying it was nothing but a minor speed bump. When they treat the revised iPad as a mid-cycle speed bump, you cry that it's a completely new model that came too soon.

Seems like they are moving to align Ipad refresh with the Christmas buying season. They did a similar CPU refresh with the Ipad2, but didn't announce it with such fanfare.

If you are in a mode of Buy, Use, Sell, Buy, Use, Sell and input 100-200 bucks a year into the ecosystem then this single cycle probably costs you a bit. I know there are people that churn between refurbs and go out of pocket basically nothing and this is going to squash that for them on this cycle.

Anyone having issues with Ipad 3 screens cracking? I am currently on my 2nd Ipad 3 glass screen and I noticed it cracked again. I have it an Otterbox Defender case and it still cracks. Am I the only one with this issue?

I pretty much shattered my whole screen but then again I dropped it on a tile floor. It didn't just crack by itself. Just got it back today after a buddy replaced the screen for <$100. Much better than the $299 that Apple wanted for it.

Anyone try out the Smart Glass app to control the Xbox360 on their iPad?

It seems pretty useless so far, cumbersome to work Netflix with. Haven't tried it on my GS3. Likely won't.

THey have a point. That said I prefer the Apple ecosystem to the Amazon setup. Drives me nuts to have to order/view video using amazon.com on my GoogleTV box... horrible interface that crashes pretty regularly on longer viewings. But... for basic tablet functionality I think Apple missed the mark badly on pricing here. THey needed to hit 249 at the most.
ipad mini commercial
I've found that most people slamming Apple for having a "busy" product line (by adding the mini) are the ones whining 12 months ago that they didn't offer a mini. :lmao: Nothing wrong with a line that spans Touch/MIni/iPad... but they need to be realistic with the pricing. The issue they're running into is the pricing on the iPod Touch (299 for 32GB / 399 for 64GB) is such that they don't have room to come in at 249 with the iPad MIni. I have no diea what their costs are on these units but they should look at something like:

iPod Touch: 199 (32) 299 (64)

iPad Mini: 249 (16) 299 (32)

iPad : 399 (16) 499 (32) 599 (64)

I think that's a pricing strategy that is a fair mix of being competitive in the market place while still affording apple healthy profit margins. That those prices they're still a premium (which the brand, fit/finish, ecosystem justify) but not so much so that they're out of touch with the segment.

Like I said earlier, Apple is dropping the ball here. The next iPad better have dual OS'es or they will be in bigger trouble. The ecosystem will only last so many iterations before the other ecosystem catches up. Apple can say they have X amount of apps but how many of those apps are pertinent to the discussion? Just like Facebook can say they have a billion users but how many are unique? The iPad 5 better be a huge improvement or else.

I say this as an Apple customer that will be buying one of the new Windows 8 tablets. I will compare them for you when I finally buy it. But, you have to admit that if these other tablets are able to run a full OS and switch between an App versus regular desktop as well as having expandable memory with USB ports and whatnot, Apple should be doing something similar. Apple's refusal, as of now, to not offer these things is getting rediculous. I'll keep my iPad 2 and be happy with it.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. There is nothing about OSX that will be functional with a touch interface and MIcrosoft's attempt to dumb Win8 down to be suitable for touch interface is drawing more ire than compliment. There is a compelling reason to keep two independent OS's just that.... an OS that is designed for touch interface is not optimal for a traditional notebook/desktop environment.... just like an OS that is mouse-based for notebook/desktops is simply NOT well-run by a touch based input. They are two different animals.

They already have ultraportable devices that are designed for people who want to do real work (full keyboard, accuracy of a touchpad, etc)... they're called ultrabooks. We are NOT heading toward a world where traditional laptops disappear in favor for all tablet interfaces.... not anytime soon.

Finally... MIcrosoft is just launching the Surface and OS8 on tablets... let's not pretend they've taken over the market and left touch-only OS's like iOS and Android in their wake playing catchup just yet. :lmao:

The CPU was not upgraded between those versions. Only the GPU was upgraded was the four SGX543 GPU cores. Every bit of that performance gain was lost due to the Retina display. In fact my understanding is that was the only reason the GPU got the upgrade. So even though you had more GPU horsepower you had the same performance. The new CPU is clocking 200mhz faster which gives twice the performance of the prior iPad in the CPU department. Since they only had to bump it up a measly 200mhz (150%) to get that performance I would assume the major architectural improvements give the rest of the improvements.

The GPU is an unknown as far as I know but the guess is it still runs the same four cores just bumped up from 250mhz to 500mhz.

If you look kup the GeekBench scores for the iPad3 vs iPad2 you will see the two devices are equal. You will also notice on the GlBench that the iPad 2 actually has better graphics performance than the 3. This is due to having to drive the Retina display. This is clear when you look at the off screen display scores of the iPad 2 vs Ipad3.

Now go look at the same benchmarks for the iPad3 vs iPad4. The ipad4 more than doubles the iPad 3 score on this benchmark.

The minor upgrade was in the iPad 2 to iPad 3 since it was basically the same performance wise. The major hardware change to the GPU was simply to drive the Retina. Now with the iPad 4 you have a true update to the iPad 2 performance wise.

So really everyone that bought the 3 got the minor upgrade. The new buyers of the 4 are the ones that won the upgrade sweepstakes.

I just went from a Window Phone to the iPhone 5. I would prefer to use the Window Phone but Sprint is not offering a Windows Phone 8 any time soon and my previous phone took a dive onto concrete. I started off really impressed with the iPhone 5 and ios6. I still love the hardware you absolutely will not find a better hardware package in a phone right now. The problem I have had so far is ios6 when I actually started using it versus looking at it. I have been asking for answers in the iPhone thread but it seems you have to jailbreak and hack the thing to get a lot of the features I miss.If the Tablet is as easy to use and presents information as easily then I couldn't imagine using an iPad over a Windows Tablet.

To bad Microsoft can't get Window Phone 8 on a piece of hardware as nice as the iPhone.

 You are correct that the CPU in the A5X remained the same, I stand corrected. The chipset was upgraded, but the upgrades were on the GPU side.

At the end of the day, only a spec geek would think that iPad 3 to v. 4 was an overall bigger jump than iPad 2 to 3. The addition of the Retina display, LTE, 5 MP camera and HD video recording - all without sacrificing performance, battery life or form-factor - marks a huge jump in functionality for the user that far outweighs a single CPU increase.

The iPad v.4 includes a new generation chipset, but it is not a new generation of device. It is a faster iPad 3.

Due to the storm yesterday we lost power and had candles lit.

Late in the night I blew out one of the candles on my kitchen table. The wax went flying all on to my ipad screen sitting right underneath it in one of the rare times it was not covered. Wax dried instantly on the screen.

I would rather have a tablet that performs well and gets work done faster. I also prefer smoother graphics in my games. That makes me heavily lean toward the better CPU/GPU.

Retina Display - Nice but not needed

The Retina display is nice but what benefit does it give you? The iPad really is to big to use as a e-reader and carry everywhere. 1080p encoded moves are scaled up so it is possible the video will not look as good as the original. If you don't scale up your wasting the extra resolution anyway.

5mp Camera-Wasted weight and space

Really? You lug an iPad around as a camera? A 5mp camera? That's still a full megapixel below what a lot of people consider the best comprise for compact cameras? Not sure why anyone would be excited about a subpar camera on a 9.7" device.

1080p Video-Wasted weight and space

Once again why are you recording HD movies with an iPad? I'd much rather use a dedicated shooter or simply use my phone that is much easier to carry around and has the same (well better) performance. Not to mention your not going to get a lot of movies stored on the smaller iPad models. Most HD at 1080p eat us almost 200mb per minute.

So truthfully I see no jump forward from the iPad2 to 3. They added a bunch of things that really did not mean a lot in the long run. Now that they released the 4 there is a true upgrade from the iPad 2.

I always get a chuckle out of seeing people hold this thing up to take video/pictures.

Bought an iPad mini, then took it back a week later.

I like the small, slim and light feel, but the screen is too small for my eyes. I enjoy going to a website and seeing the entire web page without having to zoom much.

These are the list of things I want to do. I already have the iphone 5, and I'll be getting an apple TV soon. What I need to decide on is what ipad I want (b/e ipad mini/ipad 3/ipad 4). Any advice on model and size?

[*]Have my music library (itunes) from my laptop (non mac) hooked up to my sound system (receiver, tv, surround sound, etc) wirelessly and controlled via iphone/ipad

[*]mirror ipad to TV

[*]facetime using ipad & have the screen on my television

[*]wirelessly upload all pictures/video I take with iphone to cloud

[*]regular ipad stuff (surfing, apps, etc)

Also, is the ipad refurb market reliable?

Original iPad problem....

Changed from dsl to Comcast cable modem a few weeks back. Ever since that point, my oringal iPad will not connect to the wifi network.

It's the same wifi network going through my airport extreme that I had before the switch. Also, all of my other iDevices (ipad3, 2 iphone4's, original iphone), my 2 tivos and the wife's kindle fire still connect just fine to wifi.

I've fully reset the iPad to no avail. It "sees" the network but just spins and spins trying to connect.

One thing that may be a factor that I read about online. When the Comcast cable modem was first installed, it was also broadcasting a wifi signal. I called comcast to have them turn it off (have to call to have the settings changed since I'm renting the cable modem from them). Anyway, I read somewhere that the 2 wifi signals may have "confused" my iPad. I don't know. Just a stab in the dark.

Btw, this same old iPad connects just fine to other wireless networks at work and friends houses. Just something went wonky in my home setup somehow.

Would love any advice here.

Thanks

If you're just trying to decide between the mini and the 3 or 4, I'd go with the 4. Better all around hardware and display. I'd only consider the mini if you need the smaller size (note: it's got the same processor as the 2).

Anyone having issues with Ipad 3 screens cracking? I am currently on my 2nd Ipad 3 glass screen and I noticed it cracked again. I have it an Otterbox Defender case and it still cracks. Am I the only one with this issue?
We have an Ipad 1 and 2, purchased when they were released and used heavily by kids who drop and bang them up all the time. No problems.I won an Ipad 3 at work and it came engraved with my name and company logo on the back. It got dropped one time and the screen broke

Will let the other more seasoned users answer the main questions. As for the refurb...we have a "reconditioned" iPad 2 from MacAuthority that I bought this summer and its great.

Not a single problem with it whatsoever. And for far cheaper than a new 2 or 3 would have cost me.

The current generation is the 4, which is basically the 3 ("the iPad") with upgrades.

oh :bag: So they're sold out of the refurbed 16GB 4s...so no I'm debating paying $319 for a refurbed 2 or $458 for a new 4. hmm

What is the best way to protect an iPad for children? If kids aged 4-10 are using it sometimes, what is my best bet?

 teach them not to throw it?I have a 6 and 8 yo who use/handle ipads with no problems. They are not running through the house with them - usually just sitting somewhere when they are using them.

This really isn't true. The 4 is Double the CPU speed, Double the graphics speed and has full LTE compatibility. The 2 vs 3 really depends on if you want the Retina display or not. Performance wise the 2 and 3 are exactly the same. Unlike the difference in power from the 3 to 4.Personally, I wouldn't touch any iPad outside of the 4 at this point. Once developers start using the extra graphics and CPU power for more advanced games they will lag on the older hardware.
