iPad (1 Viewer)

Add a std replacement warranty - $19.99 for items 100-200 vs 74.99 for items 300-400, and the costs become $229.93 vs $423.73 *gag*
So YOU'RE the sucker who keeps those things in business.... :lmao:
My son dropped my wife's Samsung 7 on my tile floor which broke the screen... No questions asked I had a new tab in my hands in 15 minutes for $0... The $20 has now paid for itself 10 times over now...

According to Apple's website, the 4th gen iPad is the same weight and depth as the one it replaces. I had expected that when they moved to the A6 they would be able to shrink the battery enough to at least get the numbers back in line with the iPad 2, since the weight, thickness, and charge time were what was holding me back from upgrading from a 2. Obviously it's a nice improvement over what it replaces, but this feels more like the iPad Apple wanted to ship 6 months ago.

the bolded is almost always the case. there's always a new feature/component that's only 6 months away.unless you're upgrading every time they release a new one, i don't understand being annoyed.

Please tell me this thing has, at least, figured out how to browse more than half the web?

Is that supposed to make it ok that it is easier to use the web browser on my phone than my iPad? Flash may be in decline, but it is still in a ####load of places. Even sites that aren't using flash often have problems rendering or crash the browser. Inexcusible.
I have encountered one flash issue on a website in thousands of hours of browsing on my iPhone. Flash is a dying breed. I fully support apple kicking it to the curb a bit early to improve the overall user experience (security, battery life, etc.)Please list all these websites that you use that lose critical functionality due to lack of flash

It definitely sux to have paid up for the "best thing out there" and see them roll out a better thing much sooner than expected. But I totally understand why Apple is doing this. The competition has been accelerating and they have to adjust their product cycles accordingly. I think they left A LOT of money on the table waiting an entire year before introducing the iPhone 5 (both in phone sales to competitors as well as future sales of all products, software or hardware, in the ecosystem). They are wise to recognize this problem and change things up.

I call :bs: on that. I've stated in here before that I have issues with this site. But it is the broader problem of trying to open news sites like Washington or Huffington posts without crashing the browser. I use reddit heavily, and it gets tiring to have to restart the browser frequently when you click on an external link. When I was searching for a home, I couldn't access the listings pages my real estate agent sent me at all. I have even been unable to pay some bills using this thing because it was unable to display the account area correctly. Using Gchat in the browser is awful and I haven't found a 3rd party app much better. Anyways, I've been through this a few times in this thread. It isn't worth it to do again. I'm not making things up just to get internet points, just sincerly disapointed in the lack of functionality on a $600 (now out-dated) device. I'm glad everyone here finds theirs useful, it was just a throwaway comment.

Apple seems to normally wait a year. The A6 was pretty much ready apparently. I would have waited had I known it was this close. How much are "new" iPads going for on ebay?

I am being quite sincere when I say that I've not encountered many if any issues. Fantasy football sites? No issues...

Banking/CC sites (Amex, BOA, Penfed, Fidelity) : No issues

News sites (assorted): No issues

Social media sites (FB/Twitter/Youtube): No issues

Assorted VBulletin and IPBoard Forums: No issues.

etc...

I generally use AtomicLite browser due to preference of the interface and tab functionality, however. You might want to try that. It never freezes on me (though I've not run into issues with safari either).

And you seem like a pretty computer savvy guy... when have there NOT been frequent generational updates on computing devices. Hell how many updates have there been on the Asus Transformer Prime series? It's not like your product expires and stops working. :lmao:

 Youtube is a strange one for me. I often get a blank video box while the audio plays until I refresh a couple of times. Most of the issues are in Safari and Dolphin. Maybe I'm cursed. I'll try that AtomicLite next time, haven't used this thing in over a month.

Not too dismayed about the version thing, just annoyed overall with my purchase.

Buyer remorse is a legitimate issue that Apple needs to consider. There are probably a lot of people out there saying WTF with the iPad 4 being released right after the 3. The iPad is a significant investment for most, and will cause some to hesitate when thinking of purchasing another in the future.

For me, YouTube sucks all the time no matter what, regardless of device form factor, browser, operating system, or Internet service provider. It sucks on my old Linux box. On my Windows machine. Firefox. IE7. IE8. IE9. It sucks on my old iBook. On my new iMac. 10.6. 10.7. 10.8 Safari. Chrome. iPhone. iPad. Everything. It sucks over 3G. It sucked when I had Cable, it sucked when I had DSL, and it sucks on my 20 Mbps FiOS connection. I hate it with the passion of a thousand burning suns. :hot: If I hit play on a video and it just plays the whole thing without stuttering or farting or playing video out of sync with audio or running out of buffer it is almost like winning the lottery for me.Okay, hijack-rant over. Sorry.

I agree that it's a real customer relations challenge for Apple here. But the flipside is that a metric butt-ton of tablets are going to be purchased this holiday season, and after several spring refresh cycles, there are probably a lot of people that were not too excited about buying gifts that were expected to be updated in 3 month's time. In the long term I think Apple had to get iPads on a fall release schedule, and there was never going to be an "good" time to do it.

New ones are going for the same as the old "new" ones. Why would anyone pay hardly anything for the old ones when the new ones have twice the power? I'd by a 3 if it was say a little under half price of the 4.

Has anyone had experience trying to trade up with Apple? I jus bought an iPad 3 three months ago. Would've gladly waited if I knew.

Just think of all the people that bought them yesterday. I was in the Apple store to pick up a lighting cable and saw one couple purchase one. Store was flooded as always.

I don't care about them, I'm worried about my own peace of mind.

 How is this any different than buying a laptop? The model is obsolete once you buy it.

If you are really scared about obsolescence, stay away from technology products.

I think laptops are a little differnt because of how the specs are selected and the options that are out there. I'm fine with my iPad 3. It's good for what I currently use it for. I like my iphone5 (my 3rd iPhone), although its been glitchier than my previous ones. It's just insulting that they release the "new iPad" with all this fanfare in the spring and then release a 2nd one 6 months later. The iPad4 is the real improvement over the 2. The "new" iPad was more like ipad2s. The fanfare should have been for today, not the incremental improvement from the spring (although I guess the screen change was significant). Is the ipad4 better in the sun like the iphone5? Same screen?I won't be in the tablet market this year, but the surface looks great to me and I expect it to improve when my needs are ready for a new tablet. Apple may have lost a customer, or at least turned one into somebody who won't think of apple first or as a must buy.

Well, with a laptop you can actually do some minor upgrading. If you buy a tablet, you know there won't be any upgrading.

So did Amazon trick Apple into this smaller iPad? Now Apple looks bad bc priced higher than KindleFire et al but to me it seems the appeal of the smaller products is the lower price not the smaller size.

Why is there no youtube app for the ipad? Is there one coming out? What are you guys using instead, or are you just going through safari?

I will bet any amount of money you want that the IPad mini is the "item to have" for Christmas this season far outpacing the Kindle Fire and every other tablet.

So people take shots at Apple because they usually only release once a year (i.e. the SG3 commercial), then when they update their products more often, they get slammed, too. Can't please everyone....

Item to "have" or item thats bought?

Yep. The price point feels a bit high but I'm sure Apple priced this thing such that they will be supply-constrained for the entire holiday shopping season. That is, there is no point in going below price X if you believe you will sell all you can make for price X for the key shopping period of the year.I also think it's a lock that the price will drop with the next revision of the Mini.

Well, I for one, am glad we just upgraded my older Mac Pro tower with a new iMac a couple of months ago and missed out on this new one. If we had waited it would have changed everything because part of my job is authoring DVDs. I'm guessing there will be external burners? If not I'm stuck with my 2009 iMac at home until DVDs finally die.

I feel sorry for dvd authors because it seems like the writing is on the wall for them. I'm mainly a video editor so it doesn't affect me that much but I do know people who are just DVD authors. Better find some other occupation soon.

Apple is alienating it's hardcore supporters, the professionals, big time. Yes, they are ahead of the game but people are earning a living on TODAY'S technology right now. How would you like to have been a college student learning how to edit on Final Cut Pro 7 for the last couple of years just to have Apple say "too bad! We totally changed it! All your familiarity with our editing software is no good anymore!" We just switched over to Avid because of it. I could go on and on but this is an iPad thread so I won't.

Yes, there are external DVD burners. If I was buying a new iMac today (I have the same gen you do) I'd be a bit bummed because adding an external drive takes away from the all-in-one appeal, but I think the reality is most people don't use the optical drive in their computers anymore, and Apple is always ahead of the curve when it comes to eliminating legacy technogoly from their computers. It's not the end of the world. (Obligatory anecdote about Apple leaving a floppy drive out of the first iMac goes here) Personally I'm still not happy with the state of digital video distribution. Buying gets you less for more compared to a DVD/Blu-ray, and locks you into a particular ecosystem and device family. Selection sucks for streaming services. Rental terms are a joke. So I still buy and rip DVDs for use on iDevices.

It seems clear to me that Amazon and Google are dead-set on providing fierce downward pressure on tablet prices. But as I said, it make no sense for Apple to price tablets any lower than the price that would result in them selling as many as they could make. I think by next year they will be in a position to go completely bananas with iPad Mini production and they will price them more aggresively as a result.

That is, there is no point in going below price X if you believe you will sell all you can make for price X for the key shopping period of the year.I also think it's a lock that the price will drop with the next revision of the Mini.
Based on what exactly?
It seems clear to me that Amazon and Google are dead-set on providing fierce downward pressure on tablet prices. But as I said, it make no sense for Apple to price tablets any lower than the price that would result in them selling as many as they could make. I think by next year they will be in a position to go completely bananas with iPad Mini production and they will price them more aggresively as a result.
When has Apple dropped the price point of an entry level ianything?

Lately they have done this by dropping the price on last-gen hardware by $100. Apple was always tinkering with the iPod line and hitting a variety of price points. The first iPhone had a price drop before the 3G even came out. But it's a fair point, in general Apple's aim seems to be to find a price point, then each year make the best device they can for that price. At any rate, somehow or another I believe this time next year Apple will be selling an iPad that costs less than $329.

So is my "New iPad" now officially called iPad 3? And if so, is the iPad 4 really the "Newer iPad" or iPad 4?

Eta Will the iPad 5 officially be called the "Newest iPad?"

I'm still not sure why people who bought an iPad 3 are upset. I bought one back in May, and when I look at the differences with the iPad 4:

* Faster processor - my iPad 3 seems plenty fast, I'm not sure what the benefits of this are. Maybe in the future as applications get more advanced there would be a noticeable difference.

* Lightning connector - don't want this, incompatible with the cables and accessories I already have for my iPhone and kid's iPad Touch.

* Dual-band Wi-Fi - I don't even have my router set up for dual-band, my wireless performance is just fine as-is, and the only benefit to something faster would be for moving data around the house, as my cable modem speed is far below single-band Wi-Fi speed.

I think that's it, unless I'm missing something.
