iPad (2 Viewers)

True audiophiles don't like Digital. Video? Hi-res media files are still smaller than the original un-compressed format. Digital is ultimately disposable. If you want to save the media, then there are a ton of options to do that with. The native HD on any box is to run the OS and it's apps. You really don't need a lot of drive space on the box to do that. Anybody who builds a storage array does not have the OS on it. My builds in the future would have an 64GB SSD for the OS, and the RAID array is predicated on what I do with it.

Goggins, do yourself a favor, and leave this thread now. You're a flat out bore.
Maybe, but that's not the crowd Apple spent the last 8 years wowing. I'm the normal Apple iPod guy - I love my 80 gig iPod and have spent years building my library. 16 and 32 gig iPads just aren't going to cut it if I can't even fit my music library on there. :banned: What are the ton of options to store media on my iPad?
Do me a favor. Go and find a hi capacity Sansa or Creative media player. Then go to the Apple site, and you will see a 160 gig iPod that doesn't play FLAC files, but can play lossless with conversion, like the Apple has the proprietary H.264 format to Window's WMV. If all you have are mp3 files, then Apple has the device for you. If you have a box fast enough to convert to .mp4 for video, then the same 160 gb Classic iPod can play them.

LOL, everybody is beyotching about Apple and storage, when they have the only handheld media player that has the most capacity in the iPod classic, even after Creative gave up on high capacity with the old Zen.

Edit: Archos has the most capacity, but you have to pay for Codec support. You're better off buying an Dell netbook to do the same thing as the Archos.

Not speaking for JB here, but I am betting the bolded crap is what he is talking about being "childish behavior"...really no better than the bashers at this point.
This discussion devolved 15 pages ago. I've just stopped taking it seriously.
It's picked back up....thanks for staying away :coffee: and thanks to icon for bringing it back to useful :lmao:

This is exactly what I've said previously in this thread that I completely don't understand. You are an Apple fanboi, had their products yet seem either upset or surprised on how propriety Apple is with their products? I can understand someone never having anything from Apple, actually I take that back since you can easily google anything now but I hear this a lot from people who LOVE Apple, no matter what they put out.Is this part of the Apple fanboi culture? To sort of have that "hey, look at me I can drop $ on something AND complain and act shocked on how limited the product is?"
What are YOU talking about? I'd never service Steve Jobs like some people in this thread would. I don't blindly defend Apple. I bought some of their products. I complained about the machine prior to the purchase suspecting it to be a heap, and I put my money where my mouth is. And yeah, I gave the company the benefit of the doubt because if I had no use for it, I know someone who would. You've got a problem with that? :lmao:

Do you really need access to your entire music library all at once when on the road? I don't know how most people listen to music, but I typically have two categories on my 8GB Nano at any given time: (1) my tried and true favorites (like Dark Side of the Moon) and then (2) all the new stuff I'm currently listening to. I rarely think "crap, I wish I had that Rush album from 1994 on me right now, I really feel like listening to it." So I've never minded swapping music in and out. This is no different for me.

Thanks for the helpful multiple-post analysis of the slap fight. And your input on the iPad you don't own has been super helpful.

:lmao: House your full media library on your main computer and swap stuff in and out of your mobile devices for when you're on the road.

I currently have 156 GB of music in my library. I've found a great way of handling the issue is to use the Genius playlists in iTunes. Pick a single song and hit the Genius playlist button, and I instantly have a full playlist of similar songs. Do that for all your favorite artists/genres whatever, and you can quickly create a robust mobile catalog that will cover the depth of your library without having to haul around everything.

Or just listen to Pandora, which is what I find myself doing most of the time anyway.

As I mentioned, this won't even be an issue in a couple of years when all of my music, video and pics are in the clouds. But if we're really being objective, this is a negative for the iPad as things stand now. When I'm going to Maui for a week or Japan for business, I don't want to have to predict what I'm going to be in the mood to listen to 5 days from now. I certainly don't have that issue now with the 160 gb HD on my netbook; I have access to my entire library at all times.

Obviously not a deal breaker, but it seems silly that a machine touted as the greatest magical media device ever doesn't even have the HD capacity to store my personal media - when every other laptop/netbook out there does. :tinfoilhat:

If you really want a hi capacity media tablet, go buy an expensive Archos, which will cost you even more $$ over the time you own it and still not be happy the entire time you do with the device. Problem solved.

HD space isn't a deal breaker for me, but it's disingenuous to act as if the limited space isn't a drawback. I can house my entire media library on less than half of my netbook's HD. On an iPad, I'd have to pick and choose what to take with me every time I leave the house.

Nah, I'll probably still get an iPad. I'm just objective enough to admit that while it's likely by far the best media tablet out there, it's not perfect. Mind boggling how you guys can't even say, "yeah, I wish it had more HD space as well. It's a legitimate drawback."

Well, once you figure out the cost of 500gb shoehorned into a thumbnail that is just as fast as an SSD, get back to me OK?

See, comments like this aren't helpful and drag the discussion down. I haven't seen anyone here actually proclaim the iPad as "perfect". Every device has it's strengths and weaknesses, each buyer has to decide for themselves how to prioritize those. For me, the limited HD space isn't a concern and I tried to explain (from a user standpoint) why. Would it be cool if it had 1 TB of storage? Sure, but then I look at the drawbacks. To have large storage, you'd have to use a traditional HDD drive instead of SSD "flash" memory. SSD has no moving parts, so they are much more rugged and less prone to damage than HDD drives. HDD drives are also about twice as heavy, which could be an issue for a device like the iPad where holding it with one hand is expected usage. SSD is also much faster, in most cases 2x-3x faster, so everything from system startup to accessing files will be noticeably quicker. SSD also consumes less battery power than HDD. So for me, I'll take the numerous benefits of SSD memory over the increased storage of HDD in a device like the iPad.

Some of us are being objective in our thoughts even if you don't agree with our opinions.

I'm not but find it  when people buy Apple products then complain about lack of HD. Do they not read the specs? Here's what I'm talking about, I guess people have never used Wifi before they got their Ipad since Wifi can go in and out at times.

iPad users complain about Wi-Fi

Sorry early adopters, some iPad users are reporting their devices can't connect or stay connected to the Internet. Why don't companies catch big glitches like these? Stacey Vanek-Smith reports.

I read online about some users who complained about buying the lower HD Ipad since their music alone almost gobbled up all the available HD and wish it had more and didn't want to pay for the more expensive Ipad. :lmao:

You're missing the point. The point is that when you buy a product one should know their limits (whatever they may be) and not complain about it. Not enough HD space? Buy the more expensive model. Don't want the chance that Wifi will go in and out, wait for the 3GS model. Want Flash to play games on browser? Don't buy it. It's like buying an Ipad then complaining that you can't pop in your DVDs after the fact. Strange.

Ok, I'm with you on this.

Is it really that limited for a device of this type? It seems fine to me. I guess that's where we disagree. I'd rather have something this small, fast and light and have less HD space. If I want something bigger and with a clunky old magnetic hard drive, I could get that. Flash > magnetic

Why? Some of us don't "wish it had more space." It's a "who cares" for me. It's the same way I've been using my iPods for years. I have no problem with the size.As it stands I've got the thing loaded up with a bunch of music, movies, apps, work files, and photos, and it's half full. :football:

Apple's target market isn't that bright.

I have found something annoying. I can't reply to posts with lots of quoted text. There is no scroll bar in the reply box for me on the iPad. Maybe I'm an idiot but it's annoying me so if any other ipaders are experiencing this let me know what I need to do.
I figured this out, all you have to do is use a two finger swipe in the reply textfield and it scrolls through that text box perfectly.

Stacey Vanek-Smith reports.

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display...-wifi-problems/

I read online about some users who complained about buying the lower HD Ipad since their music alone almost gobbled up all the available HD and wish it had more and didn't want to pay for the more expensive Ipad.
Apple's target market isn't that bright.
Yes, apple targets a dumb and low class segment of the population. :lmao:

it's disingenuous to act as if the limited space isn't a drawback.
Is it really that limited for a device of this type? It seems fine to me. I guess that's where we disagree. I'd rather have something this small, fast and light and have less HD space. If I want something bigger and with a clunky old magnetic hard drive, I could get that. Flash > magnetic
I don't think we disagree, I'm just pointing out that there's a trade off. I also prefer flash (who doesn't?) but not having having access to your entire library on a device that bills itself as a "magical" media device sucks. Your workarounds are fine, but as Jobs would say, "you shouldn't have to think about that".

Nice job figuring it out - but could have saved yourself the trouble as this solution was also mentioned when the issue was brought up earlier in the thread.

I see what you're saying. I guess the ideal device would have unlimited storage (and an unlimited battery for that matter). But design constraints are what they are. In view of current technology, and size and cost and space limitations, the sizes seem fine to me. :shrug:Then again, that might be because I'm used to my 8GB iPod Nano, which forced me to do it the same way. I never had my whole music library with me. I guess I could have bought the biggest side iPod and probably fit all my music, but I just never cared to. I was happier with the cheaper and, more importantly, smaller Nano. If they offered a larger, heavier iPad with a traditional hard drive (so no "instant-on" functionality), I would still buy the smaller flash-based one. But of course different people will have different preferences.

putting credit on the shoulders of the op my friend. I would have assumed an attention starved individual like yourself might appreciate the effort.

I don't even know what this means. Do you read what you type?

Perhaps if these people who are complaining had thought trying out the Ipad first rather than be the first to get one they could have saved themselves the moaning. Who doesn't know that getting the first gen of a product w/o testing it out could potentially have problems?

iPad Problems: Users' BIGGEST Complaints So Far (PHOTOS)

Weak Wifi

"Apple forums and the official support site are jam packed with user complaints all related to weak WiFi signal problem," Product Reviews reports. One user, Andrew79, wrote in to an Apple forum with a typical complaint, saying, "My signal keeps fluctuating from strong to weak, while my MacBook and iPhone show a consistent signal at the same location."

Charging Issues

The Times explains that some users are having issues recharging their Apple tablets:

"New reports suggested that the iPad may not power up properly when connected to some USB ports. Users also complained that the iPad would only charge if turned off or in sleep mode." Yahoo's tech blogger shared his personal charging woes, explaining, "when I plugged my new iPad into my MacBook Pro and saw the "Not charging" message next to the iPad's battery icon." (MacWorld offers tips on how to charge your iPad.)

Crashing Apps

According to The Times, iPhone apps are frequently crashing when loaded onto the iPad. Yahoo's Ben Patterson adds, "I've been hearing a series of complaints about iPad apps crashing repeatedly; the culprits run the gamut, ranging from games and the Netflix and ABC streaming video players to apps for the New York Times and TIME magazine. "

Typing Headaches

The iPad can be clunky when it comes to writing with the device. Dave Winer writes on his blog, "None of my writing tools are there. Not just the ones I use to enter keystrokes into the computer, and edit and revise them, but also the tools I use for finding information I want to reference in my stories. ... It's definitely not a writing tool. Out of the question." Gizmodo opines, "It's pretty clear that typing is a secondary function for the iPad."

Sluggish Syncing

PC World explains: "Time spent syncing is ridiculously sluggish. Some users say that syncing their iPads gobbles up 30-plus minutes -- others claim four or more hours, with one user saying they lost seven hours. This begs the question: what's the point in buying a tablet that won't let you play with it?" Users on the Apple forum report that syncing the iPad often freezes iTunes: "iTunes recognizes the iPad fine, but as soon as I click the sync apps check box, iTunes freezes."

College Kid Disappointed with my Ipad

Shane Sweeney:

Overall, the ipad is way more of a let down then any body in the media has been reporting it as. Pretty sure they were all paid off.

I got one of the iPads with a defunct wifi chip, so my wifi has been crappy.

Also, I bought it to ready content (mostly pdfs) from my classes as they move to being more web based. Viewing pdfs is horrendous. It's slow, you can't save them, take notes, highlight, and you have to be online to view them for the most part.

I hate the iphone app emulator! It makes apps barely usable with the emulated keyboard.

I also bought it for the netflix app, which crashes and navigates poorly. Awesome!

Not a fan, probably just going to return mine and turn my macbook sideways

Legitimate complaints for sure. The wifi issue seems like the biggest. I haven't had problems with charging or any apps crashing. As expected, typing isn't easy, but it's getting better with time. I haven't had any trouble syncing, but I've only done it a few times. As for the college kid above, I'm not sure what he's talking about with this PDF issue. I've had no problem viewing PDFs in the OS and in the air sharing app.

As for the wifi, I wonder if that could turn into a major recall type scenario. Or maybe we'll get discounted upgrades to the 3G version...

See, comments like this aren't helpful and drag the discussion down. I haven't seen anyone here actually proclaim the iPad as "perfect".
You've been very insightful in this thread, as has icon and for that I am appreciative. But what do you expect when someone comes in and asks a question and gets the "I can't believe you would THINK of using it that way" or "That's not what it's make for" comments as TG and others have encountered. What's wrong with saying "Yeah, HD space is a short coming"? No one's said it's "perfect" but making excuses for the obvious shortcomings is the closest thing one can do short of claiming perfection.

Thanks for the helpful multiple-post analysis of the slap fight. And your input on the iPad you don't own has been super helpful.
Feel free to put me on ignore  I've had a pretty good conversation with icon and goonsquad over what's to come from Apple. Feel free to go back to your slap fight with the haters.

Got one today. The resolution on Netflix movies is very good.

Nice alternative to a netbook.

IMO, pointing to limited HD space is an opinion rather than an obvious shortcoming. While TG's opinion on the HD is valid, it isn't shared by everyone. I tried to point out the numerous trade-offs between HDD and SDD memory in my previous post, and in light of those tradeoffs it is just as valid to think that Apple made the correct decision going with SDD. TG and others may disagree, but perhaps that just means that the iPad isn't the right device for him. And that's fine. There are plenty of alternatives on the way. I can guarantee that none of those other devices will achieve complete "perfection" either. They may have a certain functionality that TG or others highly value, but there will always be tradeoffs made.

 House your full media library on your main computer and swap stuff in and out of your mobile devices for when you're on the road.

That's funny gs as I find myself now listening to pretty much exclusively genius lists from my ipod or pandora. Which are similar concepts. And just way more targeted for me it feels.

It's all "opinion" based on how one would like to use it. If TG wants a device his entire library sits on, HD space is a problem to him. He's not a hater because it's a problem to him. It simply doesn't meet his need. There's no need to tell him "You're using it wrong" or "It's not meant for that"....it's either opinion or it's not and statements like that are just silly if one truly believes it's opinion. The world isn't going to fall apart if the iPad doesn't address every single person's need.

Clearly the iPad isn't meant for that though - so that's a reasonable response to asking why it doesn't have tons more flash memory built in.I think the Apple guys here have been pretty reasonable overall, a lot more of the argumentativeness has come from the other side.

I checked one out at the store and it was a great piece of technology.

My main use for one right now would be as a reader and mainly for PDFs.

I was disappointed that PDFs viewed from a website had virtually no navigation controls that are standard, e.g. a find box and a go to page ability.

I'm *hoping* that pdfs that are stored on the machine have those controls, although it was also disappointing to find out how clunky it was to get the pdfs into the machine... i can't just right click and download from a website, nor can I pop in a usb drive... if I understood correctly, I have to email them to my machine. So the store didn't have a pdf already on the iPad that I could view on the it.

Otherwise though, the pdfs rendered great and looked awesome and the ability to expand the font easily was appreciated.

I think I'll wait for the 2nd generation and hopefully a few more features and a price drop before jumping in... but it's not because I don't want one now that I've seen it.

Dodd's post earlier referencing a review that said the iPad is an entertainment machine, not a business machine or laptop replacement is what really made the light go on for me and made me start thinking about what I actually would and could use it for... and I came up with enough legit uses that would actually justify me buying one now.

Umm.. you just repeated everything that I said previously, only made it sound as if you are countering my statements. :headbang: Please don't make it sound like I ever called TG a hater or told him he's "using it wrong". Because I didn't. Honestly, TG was the one repeatedly pointing to HD space as if it's a fatal design flaw and that everyone that disagrees with him is wrong. And to be frank, he's also the first to mock people as "fanboi" or tell us we're "drinking the kool-aid" if we disagree with him. :lmao:

It's not YOU. The comments were about the guys feeling it necessary to fall on the proverbial sword for everything that others felt was a short coming. I just happened to quote your post.
