iPad (2 Viewers)

See, comments like this aren't helpful and drag the discussion down. I haven't seen anyone here actually proclaim the iPad as "perfect".
You've been very insightful in this thread, as has icon and for that I am appreciative. But what do you expect when someone comes in and asks a question and gets the "I can't believe you would THINK of using it that way" or "That's not what it's make for" comments as TG and others have encountered. What's wrong with saying "Yeah, HD space is a short coming"? No one's said it's "perfect" but making excuses for the obvious shortcomings is the closest thing one can do short of claiming perfection.
IMO, pointing to limited HD space is an opinion rather than an obvious shortcoming. While TG's opinion on the HD is valid, it isn't shared by everyone. I tried to point out the numerous trade-offs between HDD and SDD memory in my previous post, and in light of those tradeoffs it is just as valid to think that Apple made the correct decision going with SDD. TG and others may disagree, but perhaps that just means that the iPad isn't the right device for him. And that's fine. There are plenty of alternatives on the way. I can guarantee that none of those other devices will achieve complete "perfection" either. They may have a certain functionality that TG or others highly value, but there will always be tradeoffs made.
It's all "opinion" based on how one would like to use it. If TG wants a device his entire library sits on, HD space is a problem to him. He's not a hater because it's a problem to him. It simply doesn't meet his need. There's no need to tell him "You're using it wrong" or "It's not meant for that"....it's either opinion or it's not and statements like that are just silly if one truly believes it's opinion. The world isn't going to fall apart if the iPad doesn't address every single person's need.
Clearly the iPad isn't meant for that though - so that's a reasonable response to asking why it doesn't have tons more flash memory built in.I think the Apple guys here have been pretty reasonable overall, a lot more of the argumentativeness has come from the other side.

I checked one out at the store and it was a great piece of technology.

My main use for one right now would be as a reader and mainly for PDFs.

I was disappointed that PDFs viewed from a website had virtually no navigation controls that are standard, e.g. a find box and a go to page ability.

I'm *hoping* that pdfs that are stored on the machine have those controls, although it was also disappointing to find out how clunky it was to get the pdfs into the machine... i can't just right click and download from a website, nor can I pop in a usb drive... if I understood correctly, I have to email them to my machine. So the store didn't have a pdf already on the iPad that I could view on the it.

Otherwise though, the pdfs rendered great and looked awesome and the ability to expand the font easily was appreciated.

I think I'll wait for the 2nd generation and hopefully a few more features and a price drop before jumping in... but it's not because I don't want one now that I've seen it.

Dodd's post earlier referencing a review that said the iPad is an entertainment machine, not a business machine or laptop replacement is what really made the light go on for me and made me start thinking about what I actually would and could use it for... and I came up with enough legit uses that would actually justify me buying one now.
It's not meant for that. Go buy a reader. :X This goes both ways.

NOTE: I don't believe what I wrote, just showing you an example of how silly it is to say such things.

Wired Article Re: Apple's intents for Convergence:

Six months ago an Apple analyst told me he thought the company’s long-term goal was to become the internet’s cable TV company. I didn’t get it then. I really get it now. Most think of Apple as a computer or consumer electronics company. I think that’s becoming a means to a much bigger end: becoming a giant news, entertainment and communications network with Googillian ambitions.

Most of its money still comes from selling computers, iPhones, iPods and iPads. But with its move into advertising, the spike in revenue from selling iPhone aps (four billion downloads and counting), as well as its move to take a percentage of book and other content sales on the iPad have NEW MEDIA COMPANY written all over them. It is moving to build the self-perpetuating effects that come with such a platform with astonishing speed.

The portals like Yahoo tried this. Their mistake? They didn’t make iPhones or iPads. Turns out, desktop and laptop computers and existing cell phones are lousy at consuming content. Everyone keeps running into the “lean forward lean back” problem. Computers are lean forward devices, but lousy entertainment machines. TVs are great to watch a movie on but lousy at doing email or web surfing.

The iPhone and probably the iPad are the first devices that truly solve this fundamental problem of media convergence. Probably because of their portability and touch screen, we are just as happy to do email and web surf as we are to lean back and watch a video or a movie with handheld, touch-screen devices.

I’ll leave the goodness or badness of Apple’s ambitions to others. What is not debatable however is that what Apple is doing has the potential to be a colossally huge business.

Cable TV companies’ are always constrained by their capital costs (laying and maintaining all that cable). Apple has none of those worries. I appears that for the moment all it has to do is keep making killer devices and software and the rest will take care of itself.

Devices like the iPad and iPhone generate audience, which attracts advertisers (a business Apple just said it was plunging into), which attracts content. It doesn’t hurt that Apple has proven to be one of the few online platforms capable of charging for digital content.

We can debate the pros and cons of Apple’s proprietary standards — as we have, and are — endlessly. As a matter of principal I don’t like them. Practically, they make things so easy that I’m not sure I care. Maybe Google’s model — control the software and let everything else take care of itself — will prove to be a better model.

But that was Microsoft’s model too, and we all know how happy we were about that. Maybe in the long term Apple’s platform will be popular enough, the content good enough and devices usable enough that it won’t have to lock us in.

What is clear is that with each passing day Steve Jobs is looking less and less like Sony’s co-founder Akio Morita and more and more like CBS’s Bill Paley — the man credited with inventing network television.

That is a very big deal indeed.

Fred Vogelstein is writing a book about the intersection of media and tech in Silicon Valley.

I have read some of the posts regarding HD size and limitations. Maybe I am different than a lot of folks, but this is really no concern to me. Provided I have a wifi connection, I stream all of my music, movies, photos, webcam, and watch TV from my home PC. My only concern on my iPhone as it would be on an iPad would be enough memory to hold my apps and that's pretty much it. I realize that there are occasions where wifi would not be accessible like on some airlines (although this is changing), but it is available most places these days. I use Orb Live and have had very few hiccups in streaming media. I love having access to everything and not having to deal with all the BS that is iTunes to manage media. Just my .02

[lookatme]

I just took the plunge and ordered a 32GB Wifi+3G iPad.

too bad the HD is too small and the Wifi will be broken ;)

In all seriousness, we needed a new "sitting on the couch, surfing and checking email" machine

to replace out old ibook and I think this fits the bill perfectly.

Can't wait for it to arrive in late April!

Umm.. you just repeated everything that I said previously, only made it sound as if you are countering my statements. :lmao: Please don't make it sound like I ever called TG a hater or told him he's "using it wrong". Because I didn't. Honestly, TG was the one repeatedly pointing to HD space as if it's a fatal design flaw and that everyone that disagrees with him is wrong. And to be frank, he's also the first to mock people as "fanboi" or tell us we're "drinking the kool-aid" if we disagree with him. :lmao:
It's not YOU. The comments were about the guys feeling it necessary to fall on the proverbial sword for everything that others felt was a short coming. I just happened to quote your post.
I'm not sure who you're talking about here, but if it's me, I ALSO didn't call him a "hater." Why do I have to "admit" that there's a "problem" with the "limited hard drive space" if I don't think it's a problem at all? And why can't I have the opinion that this sort of machine was designed to have about the right about of memory, given that it's solid state and not an old school hard drive, and given that the tradeoffs between one and the other clearly favor solid state for this device?Like I said earlier, yes, in the ideal machine, it would have unlimited memory and unlimited power, but there are tradeoffs in the real world and I think they made the right choices given the purpose of this product.

I think the people who find fault in the hard drive space in this device are in the minority.

You can do all that...go for it. You are entitled to opinion, but don't pretend that it fits the need of everyone and if someone says it doesn't it's because that person is doing it wrong. That's all  Curious...what is THE purpose of this thing? It only has one? Perhaps that's your issue....I dunno.

Perhaps if these people who are complaining had thought trying out the Ipad first rather than be the first to get one they could have saved themselves the moaning. Who doesn't know that getting the first gen of a product w/o testing it out could potentially have problems?

iPad Problems: Users' BIGGEST Complaints So Far (PHOTOS)

Weak Wifi

"Apple forums and the official support site are jam packed with user complaints all related to weak WiFi signal problem," Product Reviews reports. One user, Andrew79, wrote in to an Apple forum with a typical complaint, saying, "My signal keeps fluctuating from strong to weak, while my MacBook and iPhone show a consistent signal at the same location."

Charging Issues

The Times explains that some users are having issues recharging their Apple tablets:

"New reports suggested that the iPad may not power up properly when connected to some USB ports. Users also complained that the iPad would only charge if turned off or in sleep mode." Yahoo's tech blogger shared his personal charging woes, explaining, "when I plugged my new iPad into my MacBook Pro and saw the "Not charging" message next to the iPad's battery icon." (MacWorld offers tips on how to charge your iPad.)

Crashing Apps

According to The Times, iPhone apps are frequently crashing when loaded onto the iPad. Yahoo's Ben Patterson adds, "I've been hearing a series of complaints about iPad apps crashing repeatedly; the culprits run the gamut, ranging from games and the Netflix and ABC streaming video players to apps for the New York Times and TIME magazine. "

Typing Headaches

The iPad can be clunky when it comes to writing with the device. Dave Winer writes on his blog, "None of my writing tools are there. Not just the ones I use to enter keystrokes into the computer, and edit and revise them, but also the tools I use for finding information I want to reference in my stories. ... It's definitely not a writing tool. Out of the question." Gizmodo opines, "It's pretty clear that typing is a secondary function for the iPad."

Sluggish Syncing

PC World explains: "Time spent syncing is ridiculously sluggish. Some users say that syncing their iPads gobbles up 30-plus minutes -- others claim four or more hours, with one user saying they lost seven hours. This begs the question: what's the point in buying a tablet that won't let you play with it?" Users on the Apple forum report that syncing the iPad often freezes iTunes: "iTunes recognizes the iPad fine, but as soon as I click the sync apps check box, iTunes freezes."

College Kid Disappointed with my Ipad

Shane Sweeney:

Overall, the ipad is way more of a let down then any body in the media has been reporting it as. Pretty sure they were all paid off.

I got one of the iPads with a defunct wifi chip, so my wifi has been crappy.

Also, I bought it to ready content (mostly pdfs) from my classes as they move to being more web based. Viewing pdfs is horrendous. It's slow, you can't save them, take notes, highlight, and you have to be online to view them for the most part.

I hate the iphone app emulator! It makes apps barely usable with the emulated keyboard.

I also bought it for the netflix app, which crashes and navigates poorly. Awesome!

Not a fan, probably just going to return mine and turn my macbook sideways
Legitimate complaints for sure. The wifi issue seems like the biggest. I haven't had problems with charging or any apps crashing. As expected, typing isn't easy, but it's getting better with time. I haven't had any trouble syncing, but I've only done it a few times. As for the college kid above, I'm not sure what he's talking about with this PDF issue. I've had no problem viewing PDFs in the OS and in the air sharing app.

As for the wifi, I wonder if that could turn into a major recall type scenario. Or maybe we'll get discounted upgrades to the 3G version...
I've had lots of trouble with the ABC ap crashing. Youtube as well. Though that's not really an ap, but more of a bookmark?typing is easier vertically. much.

True audiophiles don't like Digital. Video? Hi-res media files are still smaller than the original un-compressed format. Digital is ultimately disposable. If you want to save the media, then there are a ton of options to do that with. The native HD on any box is to run the OS and it's apps. You really don't need a lot of drive space on the box to do that. Anybody who builds a storage array does not have the OS on it. My builds in the future would have an 64GB SSD for the OS, and the RAID array is predicated on what I do with it.

Goggins, do yourself a favor, and leave this thread now. You're a flat out bore.
Maybe, but that's not the crowd Apple spent the last 8 years wowing. I'm the normal Apple iPod guy - I love my 80 gig iPod and have spent years building my library. 16 and 32 gig iPads just aren't going to cut it if I can't even fit my music library on there. What are the ton of options to store media on my iPad?
Do me a favor. Go and find a hi capacity Sansa or Creative media player. Then go to the Apple site, and you will see a 160 gig iPod that doesn't play FLAC files, but can play lossless with conversion, like the Apple has the proprietary H.264 format to Window's WMV. If all you have are mp3 files, then Apple has the device for you. If you have a box fast enough to convert to .mp4 for video, then the same 160 gb Classic iPod can play them.

LOL, everybody is beyotching about Apple and storage, when they have the only handheld media player that has the most capacity in the iPod classic, even after Creative gave up on high capacity with the old Zen.

Edit: Archos has the most capacity, but you have to pay for Codec support. You're better off buying an Dell netbook to do the same thing as the Archos.
I'm not but find it  when people buy Apple products then complain about lack of HD. Do they not read the specs? Here's what I'm talking about, I guess people have never used Wifi before they got their Ipad since Wifi can go in and out at times.

iPad users complain about Wi-Fi

Sorry early adopters, some iPad users are reporting their devices can't connect or stay connected to the Internet. Why don't companies catch big glitches like these? Stacey Vanek-Smith reports.

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display...-wifi-problems/

I read online about some users who complained about buying the lower HD Ipad since their music alone almost gobbled up all the available HD and wish it had more and didn't want to pay for the more expensive Ipad.
Apple's target market isn't that bright.
It would be interesting to see what area the most were sold in.

Try as they might, Apple cant avoid the physical limitations of the UI. iPad isnt much different than a laptop really. What's needed is a virtual screen and keypad viz. a pair of glasses. They can even call it iGlasses. May need to connect directly to the optic nerve. Give it another 20 years then ring me up.

Step 1: Drama Queen/Attention Whore starts thread (and others related)Step 2: Drama Queen/Attention Whore gets attentionStep 3: Drama Queen/Attention Whore complains about the attention. Is this the typical Otis thread? I don’t know.Anyway, during my vacation (the cause was either me telling Otis that he’s full of poopie or me telling Anakin that his salivary glands are overactive I don’t know which) I decided to actually try this out for myself. I got a 32G, the 64s were sold out. The Apple store goon said they had a lot of 32s and the Best Buy near me also had “plenty”. Not sure why these aren’t sold out considering the hype, TBH. This review is not for argument's sake. It's for people that want an objective opinion on the thing, coming from an Apple owner/Apple fangirl basher. Take that for what it's worth. Also, while I think I know my way around computers, they aren't my life and I'm sure I missed some tricks that may make the iPad more useful for what I want, and I'm sure some computer geeks here (no offense) will point out where I went wrong, and if I'm lucky I can get a few servings of Otis homecooked condescension. I won't fancy myself as a technology geek like some people just because I NEED to have the new gadget, then only use 15% of it. I buy things that are useful to me.Speed – for people like me speed isn’t an issue unless something is too slow. I never say “holy cow! This thing is fast!” probably because I expect things to work fast anyway, right or wrong. So the Ipad here doesn’t get a chance to get the credit it is due here because for people like me, we take speed for granted. I’ll say the speed on this machine is wonderful and I have never had a problem with it at all.Grade: A+Screen – Inside? It’s beautiful. You can’t take it outside. I have a rough time seeing anything on this thing outside. Is it because I live where the sun shines? I guess so. Maybe Cupertino is a giant cavern? Any background reflected light washes out the screen in a horrible glare. Of course, this is how it is with everything I’ve used (never use a kindle). My bet is most of the people that use this will be inside anyway.Grade: A-Battery – As good as it gets. Fangirls here aren’t bull####ting when they say they can watch movies for 8 hours or such, but I don’t know why you’d do that.Grade: A+UI – I own an iPhone. I own a touch. I use a Mac irregularly but still use it, and don’t have issue with the OS like some people raised on PCs. Even if I didn’t own a single Apple product, I think it would be easy to pick up. The thing that IMO separates this from a PC is that it’s actually fun to use, instead of a task. People say no multitasking is an issue, it’s not. The only thing that bothers me is that it reloads safari if I have multiple pages up. This can easily be remedied if I can just have another web browser instead…Grade: APrograms – I find it annoying but not surprising (I do own other Apple products) that this is so proprietary. I don’t want to use Safari. I don’t care if people think it’s better than Chrome. I want to use Chrome. I don’t want to use iTunes for media management. Why can’t I just drag and drop onto my harddrive? Cmon! I don’t want to use Apple’s programs. I don’t care if their stuff better than Word (it’s not). I want to use my Word/Excel. Pages doesn’t do the #### I want it to do. I can’t find where I can create a custom doc theme in Pages, that's annoying. I also find it annoying that I have to buy all kinds of programs all over again. This makes the iPad seem like merely a revenue window. I guess people that want to be productive on it are being punished in some way. That being said, Flight Control is really a fun game. 250,000 apps? Who gives a ####? I want MY programs. Why the strict parameters?Grade: D+Peripherals and other stuff – No USB. Someone says USBs are dying out? OK. Are they dying out TOMORROW? No? Then no reason to not hook one up and leave it off of the next gen. No camera. That’s stupid, but the Apple store goon said there was an adapter coming out shortly. Speakers aren’t very good, but I guess like the screen, it’s as good as it gets in a machine like this. The keyboard is easy to type on and you don’t need to buy the accessory. Some people complain about this. Maybe I'm just used to it since I own an iPhone. It's easy to pick up.Grade: CHarddrive – Why so small? Bad Genes? Can’t we put a half T in ####ers this size yet? Will it overheat or something? I don’t understand why we can’t just load up on memory. I’m sure other machines like it will have equally bad memory, that’s no excuse. Is Apple a leading tech company or not? Don't make me report to a server to get my data. I want it in my hand. And if you aren't going to let me just plug an external HD into the machine like a netbook would let me do, then make your harddrive bigger. No excuse.Grade: FSummary: It’s a fun machine, if you want to simplify what its tasks are. Use it as an audio jukebox, but the speakers suck, so use this with headphones. You can’t use it as an all purpose jukebox, because the harddrive is too small. It’s a great e-picture frame, (proprietary) game player and web browsing device. It’s really pretty! This doesn’t “Just work” like one might expect it to. Beware the hidden costs of purchasing applications and accessories for this machine. If you are OK with hidden costs, lack of harddrive, and that you are forced to use Apple's programs, then it's a pretty sweet device.Overall Grade: C+Verdict - This is a buy for the following:1) People that own everything2) Apple fangirls3) People that don’t need a computer for productivity, but for simplified uses like movies, music, games, email4) People that are normally defeated when using more complex machines, like a netbook. It would be a nice gift for mom. :Dedit - I do want to say that I'm thankful for Apple, they make good products. And I'm thankful for this machine, without it other companies wouldn't try to improve upon it. And I am thankful for the fangirls that guy it no matter what. Without them, there may not be a second gen machine, and no improvements either. All of these things make the consumer ultimately the big winner here. It's easy to nitpick the first to do stuff. Neil Armstrong probably had a bit of a rough landing. Apple takes it in stride. Fangirls don't.
Nice. Thanks.

The new OS looks like it's going to be a huge improvement. Multitasking is nice, and Folders seems super important. Also I heard Jobs demo'd or discussed making skype calls from the iPhone -- I take it you could do the same with the iPad? I wonder if you can pair a bluetooth headset with it and use this as your primary mobile phone? In that case, I'd be awful tempted to make the switch to a 3G model of this at some point.
Really. Who would've thought that.

no headset required

I guess I get the portable DVD drive. But then again why wouldn't you just download movies to the device itself? Doesn't that solve that one? Also re: HDD, why do you need this? I just wirelessly beam whatever files onto this thing I want to at home from my main HD. I don't see this one.As for camera, that's why they have the camera adapter no?I actually just thought of one reason I'd like to have a USB -- for moving files to/from a thumb drive for work. Then again, I think someone here posted a bluetooth thumbdrive product somewhere? Looked really interesting, might pick one up. But yeah, I can see this being one reason I could miss a USB. The others don't make a whole lot of sense to me.
I tend to buy new series while i'm on trips and watch them in the hotel on my laptop. I prefer having them on DVD/Blu-Ray so i can convert them for use on any device at the bitrate I want for each device. It would if you could keep the full collection on the device but many of us would not be able to. I have a large USB drive than I stick in my laptop bag that houses my entire media collection. Not to mention beaming is slower than a direct connected drive in transferring gigs worth of data.

I have a question? Why would the Itouch (a lot smaller device) have a 64GB option yet the Ipad only has a 32 GB option? Put me firmly in the category of waiting until these units have at least 64GB of storage.

Anyone figure this out on the ipad?

On the ipod touch it is very annoying to have to scroll to the bottom of a webpage (like an open thread in FBG). Easy to get to the top, but is there a shortcut like this for the bottom instead of havnig to flick your way down?

Not sure, but when you flick a few times in one direction it speeds up on each flick. That makes it pretty easy.

I find it still takes 25 flicks or so to get to the bottom of a full thread page (with 100 posts on it). Must be a better way.

Anyone figure this out on the ipad?On the ipod touch it is very annoying to have to scroll to the bottom of a webpage (like an open thread in FBG). Easy to get to the top, but is there a shortcut like this for the bottom instead of havnig to flick your way down?

This. But I do wish they had a real scroll bar on the side. You can see it there - but its only to show you where you are on the page - they should make it so you could "grab" it and move to any location on the page you want.

Unfortunately there isn't a built in option to do this, but there's a couple ways to set it up.If your ipod/ipad is jailbroken, you can use Quick Scroll from Cydia. Most likely your ipad isn't jailbroken, so you can make a bookmark (bookmarklet) with the following code:java script:scroll(0,document.getElementsByTagName(%22body%22)%5b0%5d.scrollHeight);Tapping that bookmark will take you to the bottom of any page. Unfortunately that's the easiest way I've found. I also think you have to set this up on a Mac (Safari) and then sync it to your ipad.

So I was at the Apple site and I saw the options for WIFI+3G "ships late April". Was this not an option with the first iPads? I made a post a few days ago about how they'll probably roll out a new iPad with 3G and sucker everyone in who already bought.

Was the 3G not an option with this first release?

 Both products, and their approximate release dates, were announced at the product launch. This is nothing "new".

So even though the first release wasn't going to offer 3G and an release just weeks later would, people still rushed out and bought the product without 3G :lmao:What's with the :whoosh: I don't think anything went over my head.

I'm out of luck on both fronts then. I'm used to this now, but annoying nonetheless. Surprised they didn't fix this for the ipad.

Why does this seem common, confusion from people who buy an Apple product then are shocked when a better model is coming right after. Did you honestly think that the 3G version wouldn't come out another year?ANYONE who buys the first version of an apple product should know by now that you aren't getting the most bang for your buck. What you get is the "first one on the block" cache that comes with it. Nothing more.

You do realize that every company in the entire world does this, right?Products improve over time as technology improves. It happens with automobiles, it happens with computers, it happens with televisions, it happens with sex toys, it happens with golf clubs, it happens with apple products.

Not like Apple.A car company that comes out with their brand new 2011 model car doesn't come out with one a month later loaded with more features.

You know by getting Apple version 1 that their next version will have more features on it. For people to act  that buying a WIFI only product then next month coming out with WIFI + 3G is laughable.

Look at Apple's history starting from their ipod.

Specifically this differentiation was noted from apple at the outset. Not sure if surpise is a valid reaction.
