iPad (1 Viewer)

 My 5 yo uses mine quite a bit. Some games, some educational stuff - math, spelling type stuff. The ipad is almost second nature to her - she knows how to navigate around to find the apps she wants, and then how to use those apps.In the case, I have no problem with her carrying it around the house - it is pretty sturdy.
Sure, but everyone knows that FBG kids are FAR more advanced than the average child.

My 5 year old, declared the iPad "The greatest invention and toy ever" yesterday afternoon. I somewhat agreed, as she played pretty darn contentedly while I has some quiet time to watch some golf/nap.

Does anybody know the viability of using an iPad as all my textbooks?

I've tried to find a lot of the eBook prices and so far it doesn't look like it would save any money...but if somebody has actually tried with an iPad or looked through the iBooks store, that would be really helpful.

Just picked up my IPAD2 today so I can go ahead and cancel my apple order. So far so good in setting it up. Still need to add all the apps I had on my touch and then hopefully start looking for some new ipad type apps.I surfed a bit and it was great. Zero issues with any flash content so far (watched numerous vids from multiple sites). Iswifter is working great as people had told me. What a sweet little app.Still having some problems with ESPN3. It is not flash related, it appears to be isp service provider related. Not sure what I am doing wrong there as every other computer in my house can see espn3.com with out being asked about a provider.Anyone use ESPN3.com with the IPAD?
If you're viewing "Flash" on a website on your iPad... you're not viewing Flash. The website is serving up the video content via another method because they've detected that you're viewing their site via a device that does not support Flash.
Yes I know that. I don't care what the format is. As long as I can watch vids I don't care. And I have yet to find even a single one I can't watch.

My two year olds seek out and play with the iPads constantly. We have to actually hide the iPads when were not using them. Their favorite game right now is Fruit Ninja, which they call "Apple". They're other favorites are more learning based, like alphabet & farm sounds games.

Ok so I am close to pulling the trigger on an iPad2, I assume 16GB is fine for storage, just torn between wifi and 3G. I know the 3G also has A-GPS, I assume the A-GPS only works when used with actual 3G service activated correct? I wonder if the 3G model is worth the extra $130 even if I do not activate the data plan right away. I realize I can easily tether a droid phone to it, but can I easily take advantage of GPS as well?

What are you planning to do with it? Are you going to be using it a lot when you are out and about, or mostly at home?

Bought an iPad from my buddy who got the newer one instead...what the hell...$350 was all...

No idea where to start with apps and such. And this thread is too long to go gold-digging. I was hoping the thread-starter had maybe updated that first post as things progressed. You know, with the best apps ya'll have come across and stuff...but it seems he's not interested in that sort of thing.

Anyway, is there a site or some such where I should start with this thing?

TIA

Someone recommended AppStart to me ... decent overview of a bunch of Apps for all occasions.Might be a good place to start exploring.

:goodposting: I think people are underestimating the storage a bit. I have the 32, and it is over half-full.

Really depends on if you're OK using iTunes as your media library and only carrying the media you want in the short-term on the device, or if you just want to have everything you own on the iPad all at once. My music collection alone is more than 100GB, so I'm used to managing my media on a regular basis. I get by with a 16GB iPhone just fine. I may go 32GB on the iPad when I finally buy.

Figure 2GB-4GB per movie would be a pretty safe guesstimate. Count back from there, remember to account for apps, photos, music, TV shows, books... etc.

I finally took the plunge and got the 64 wifi/3G. I figured I'd swing by the apple store to see if they had any in stock. The place was mobbed but luck would have it that they just got their daily shipment an hr before. I've ditched the laptop and moved all pc type operations back to the desktop. 90% of the time I'm just consuming content on the laptop while sitting on the sofa. It was a waste to be using that beast for just that.

The only thing I miss so far is google chrome. I wish they had an iPad browser.

The fios tv app is so :moneybag:

My 2 and 4 year olds use it more than I do. Its amazing how quick young kids take to this stuff..

I was playing with an iPad2 at the Verizon store this weekend. Color me underwhelmed. It still just seems like my iPhone only with a bigger screen but not as portable and not a phone. I'll be waiting at least another year before going the tablet route.

Apple sold close to 1 million units of its next-generation tablet computer during its debut weekend, analysts estimated.

By comparison, the original version of the iPad, which launched in April of 2010, crossed the one-million mark 28 days after its launch.

Apple shares rose [AAPL 353.56 1.57 (+0.45%) ] on the Nasdaq, even as shares of many other technology companies slumped. The Nasdaq was down 0.7 percent.

The iPad 2 went on sale in the United States on Friday evening at Apple stores, AT&T [T 28.19 -0.27 (-0.95%) ] and Verizon Wireless outlets, as well as Target [TGT 51.07 -0.46 (-0.89%) ], Wal-Mart [AAPL 353.56 1.57 (+0.45%) ] and Best Buy [bBY 31.64 0.12 (+0.38%) ] stores, greeted by thousands of eager customers Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White said it was difficult to find an iPad 2 over the weekend.

"Our field checks over the weekend indicate that the iPad 2 sold out at every Apple and non-Apple store we contacted," White wrote in a research note. "In fact, all the stores had worked through iPad 2 inventory by Saturday afternoon, and there were no new iPad 2 deliveries on Sunday."

Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland said: "We would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad 2's in the opening weekend."

Best Buy on Friday said some of its outlets ran out of the tablet and its accessories within 10 minutes.

A Morgan Keegan analyst claims that Motorola's iPad 2 rival, the XOOM, is shaping up to be the turtle to Apple's hare. After speaking with approximately 80 different retail locations, the analyst found that the Motorola XOOM is only moved from the shelf to the register twice a day at any given Verizon store. Still, 2 tablet sales per day is enough to reach Motorola's quarterly estimate of 300,000 units. To put that in perspective, analysts have estimated that there will be around 600,000 iPad 2 sales over this weekend alone. In any case, there has been glowing consumer feedback for the XOOM at Verizon stores and, as of yet, there is no evidence people are returning the Motorola tablet.
This is shaping up like the ipod v. M3P player
I think this battle is over. XOOM did not even hit its low-end estimate, with about 250,000 tablets sold in the 1st quarter. So far, every iPad killer has been DOA, and Apple continues to gain momentum.

Analysts now predict it will be 2015 before Apple is below 50% of the market.

If businesses were smart, they would begin to focus on the next big thing and beat Apple to the punch there.

Good point.According to this article...

... Android cell phones were pretty much doomed too. I sorta feel sorry for those dumb businesses that thought Android phones every had a chance.

just get an app like splashtop. install it on your home pc and your ipad. then view java, flash, or any other program the ipad doesn't support ON your ipad. Presto!

Not true...if Asus could produce them faster the $399 Transformer would be crushing the Xoom and be a major competitor to the iPad. Asus has a goal of 2 million Transformers a year and I think as more people find out about it they will get there. They are also working on a device using the Kal El chip which is 5x faster than the current Tegra 2 chip.
ASUS has a hot tablet already in the Eee Pad Transformer, which is earning solid reviews especially for its $400 price point. HULIQ strongly believes that it will be the best-selling Android tablet as soon as the company solves its supply chain issues. It's very difficult to find one of these items right now, but production will soon scale to 300,000 units a month starting next month.

With that said, ASUS already has its sights set on the higher-end of the market, according to a new report from DigiTimes. According to this, the company is already working on a tablet powered by NVIDIA's Kal-El architecture. Readers will recall that this is the GPU maker's next-generation system-on-chip for mobile devices, featuring the first mainstream ARM chip with quad-cores (and a massive 12-core graphics chip). This will reportedly net a 5x increase over the already impressive Tegra 2 chip that powers nearly all Android tablets and some upcoming smartphones.

It is unclear whether ASUS would continue to use the Transformer moniker for this new tablet, but the company has already spent considerably R&D on the laptop docking station and the proprietary connector which connects the tablet and dock, so a higher-end tablet-dock combination would be a logical packaging combination. Moreover, considering that NVIDIA trumpets Kal-El's ability to drive up to a 2560x1600 display, a laptop form factor would allow gaming enthusiasts familiar keyboard-mouse controls while connected to a larger display (or, potentially, even a multi-monitor setup).

Kal-El tablets are a certainty, but HULIQ stresses that the remainder of the details remain speculation at this point. That said, production capacity of the Transformer alone could satisfy ASUStek's goal of 2 million tablet sales per year provided demand remains strong globally. With the continuing work on Windows tablets and a higher-end tablet that leaps ahead of Apple's A5 chip in the iPad 2, ASUS would be poised to capitalize on this year's biggest growth market in technology.

The other X-factor here remains Google's ability to attract game developers to the Android ecosystem, particularly in the higher-end pool of Tegra 2 devices. Unlike the smartphone market, which is dominated by manufacturer-customized ROMs that alter the Android UI, Honeycomb is more centralized, but app development lags well behind tablet-optimized apps for iOS. Companies like ASUS continue to invest in even more powerful technology, but architectures like Kal-El will be worthless unless software development steps up. This will be an interesting development to observe as 2011 unfolds, especially since NVIDIA originally promised Kal-El devices by the holiday season.

iPad questions.

1) Is there a way to shut off autocorrect but still have it flag misspelled words? The autocorrect is causing a ton of problems for me.

2) when I reply to a long post, it takes me a long time to scroll down with the magnifying glass to get to where I can respond. Is there a simple way just to jump to the end of the posting buffer?

1 - no. Rather annoying.2 - use two fingers to drag within a window.

If they weren't so freaking expensive I'd probably have one, still think they are way overpriced but would enjoy one.

Oh cool on the two fingers. Thanks!!!

Ordered an iPad 2 on Monday. Have a new website coming out in the next few weeks and need to test it thoroughly on an iPad. It's as good an excuse as any to get one :D

That's my take too.I picked up a 4th generation iPod Touch and Kindle for about $325 and feel I got much more bang for the buck than an iPad at over $150 less.

ok may pull the trigger soon.

After research I think Apple is the way to go with this purchase, however for you vets.

Do you really use the 3g - I'm thinking of getting wi-fi only, probably the 16gb model also.

Not 100% sure but curious if you the extra $$ is worth a networked model.

I have the 1st gen wi-fi only. I use it at work and at home.On occasion, when I am traveling, I wish I had the 3g model - but have lived comfortably without it. Having said that, I will probably get another one when the 3rd generation comes out, and would probably get an AT&T networked one.

Tough decision. I ended up getting wifi-only. I was tempted to spend the extra $$ on 3G "just in case", but in the end figured I had an iPhone as well and could find whatever I needed online with that in a pinch. I did end up getting the 32GB version. Not sure if I really need the extra storage space, we'll see over time. I would probably just go 16GB wifi if I were doing it over again, as I have no problem managing the content on my devices with iTunes. I know some people hate doing that and just want to carry everything they own.

Not sure when Im going to pull the trigger...but it will be by Christmas this year. That said...going wifi only, if needed I can tether to the EVO and use my phone's 3g/4g to connect when no wifi is available.

I have a 1st Gen iPad 16gb wi-fi only that I was planning on putting on Craigslist. If anyone thinks they might be interested in it, PM me.

 Why would you even consider the 3G version? If you need access, just use your iPhone as a hotspot and connect your Ipad to the net that way.

Been screwing around with the wife's a bit and just took to the net with it yesterday to see what the experience was like. How the hell do I reply to threads here? I hit the "Add Reply" button, the window comes up, but no keyboard. I hit the "Fast Reply" button and the keyboard comes up briefly and then closes :lmao: What the heck am I doing wrong? Incidently, Words with Friends is really fun to play :nerd:

Yeah, I don't know. My thought was more of "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" kind of thing. Didn't end up getting it, though.

You have to tap in the text box to place the cursor and get the keyboard to come up.

If I get the iPad, I will pay the extra for "just-in-case 3G", because it will serve as a back up PC for me if computer or Internet goes down and I don't have a smartphone. What I came in here to ask is whether anyone used the Schwab app. Trying to figure out is the functionality is adequate enough to justify going the iPad route vs just having another PC for back up

Assume I need to route my phone for this to work? I can tether with my laptop just fine but I need a USB connection... Assuming PDAnet or something is needed with IPAD?

what kind of phone do you have? rooting an android phone (or paying $20/month) will get you a wifi hotspot that the ipad can connect through just fine.

I thought I was going crazy, but my wife can't get it to work either  oh well....at least words with friends works

I was recently disappointed at finding out the itunes video restrictions that Apple has with the iPad. Apple charges more to rent a movie on the iPad than on the iPhone or on a Mac, and also Apple won't let you buy most movies on the iPad, but you can buy the same movies (through itunes) with your iphone or Mac. And then, once you rent/buy a movie on your iPad, you are not allowed to transfer it to your Mac or iphone.

I was hoping to use my iPad as rear-seat entertainment video for the kids when driving, but that's proving to be more expensive than I thought it would be (having to constantly rent movies instead of buying). Also, the selection of movies to rent/buy on itunes is pretty thin.

Does anybody know of good software that will allow me to rip movies that I own on DVD onto my Mac where I can then transfer them to my ipad for watching?

Handbrake works well for me, and it is free.
