iPad (3 Viewers)

Looks like the JooJoo (The First "iPad Killer") Is dead in the water

Nice detailed review from Engadget that finishes up with this summary:

There are just so many things we wish Fusion Garage did differently with the JooJoo. Even putting aside the fact that Apple's $499 iPad brings more to the table than just web browsing, the JooJoo is less portable, has a worse (if larger) screen, is unintuitive to use, and ships with half-baked software. We commend the start-up on its nice piece of hardware design, but until the software is given some much-needed love and the price is seriously reevaluated we simply cannot recommend this tablet. To add insult to injury, Apple's entry level iPad provides a much more seamless and feature-packed experience, and there are plenty of $199-ish ARM-based tablets just around the corner. We told you it was terrible timing. The one shining light we can see is that Fusion Garage has actually managed to finish and build this thing, which is a lot more than can be said for the dozens of ARM / Tegra / Fairy dust-powered, Android / Linux / CE-based tablet prototypes we've seen in the wild

Going to be a problem for a lot of people. The thing is the times you can drop it probably all depends on how it lands.

LOL. This is similar to saying "The new Hyundai Sonata, not a Lamborghini killer".
That would be a fair comparison except it's not. They're both $499

This is a classic case that harks back to all the "haters" who tout devices with far superior "specs". This JooJoo has a bigger screen with a much faster processor, 4x as much memory, displays Flash, etc... yet the end user experience is far far inferior to the iPad. Better hardware numbers doesn't always translate into a better product. GUI is Apple's specialty.

I'm certainly intrigued by this theoretical systems that everyone has in the works that all seem to have more powerful hardware... but I'm skeptical that anyone will have a better overall product/experience than the iPad. It could happen but I'm not holding my breath.
What's so special about the GUI? Isn't just a bunch of icons dropped all over the place?

Question on the 3g plans. One is 250mb a month. The other plan is unlimited. Is 250mb a month much? Can someone put that in more practical terms?J
Whats the cost difference? I have a Blackberry Bold with an unlimited data plan...I surf the web quite a bit with it. I just checked my usage....I have 15 days in my billing cycle left and Ive used 150mb. And this is on a cell phone...although Im not sure if emails count as data, as I send and receive pics thru email on my phone a decent amount as well.

Quite a stink about the wifi probs, wonder if it's something a software update can fix or if it is due to bad hardware. Stay tuned
Has anyone in here experienced the wide spread wi-fi issues that so many are having with their iPads?
Exaggerate much?

" Apple's support forum is being bombarded by user complaints centering on the iPad's inability to maintain a full, steady Wi-Fi connection."

"On Monday, Apple posted a Knowledge Base article, pertaining to these issues. Not only does the article make suggestions for a remedy, it gives legitimacy to the fact that Apple considers this a very real issue."

No exaggeration here.
:lmao: The article's source is Apple's support forum.

The biggest WiFi complaint thread there is 188 posts at the moment. 300,000 iPads have been sold. Doesn't seem very widespread, does it?

I've personally spoke with 10 people with new iPads this weekend, not one mentioned problems with WiFi.

It's gonna be a long wait for the Android tablet, isn't it CT. ;)

I checked one out today that my friend has. I really wanted to like it, but I can't. I was expecting it to be a lot nicer than it was. It is more portable than my 3 year old laptop, but it doesn't have near the same functionality. Is this supposed to be targeted as more of a mobile entertainment device than a home entertainment device? While it is certainly more mobile than a laptop computer, I don't see how I could lug it around just anywhere like a phone. I could maybe see myself picking one up for letting the kids use on road trips, or if I wanted to go outside and use a multimedia device, but beyond that, I am just not seeing the upside.

Maybe someone else could explain to me what niche this is supposed to fill. If I want to watch tv, I would prefer to watch it on my tv. I would rather browse the web from my laptop. I would prefer to stream music to my home theater system. I would prefer to type on my laptop. It is easier to read a book on then my laptop.
Except it has a limited codec support,non-HD display and limited storage capacity.

That's what people in the thread were saying. I didn't read it super closely. I guess if you don't have old devices that run only on a/b bands, there's no difference. :missing:
Will this device not run on anything but G networks? That can't be true.
No, that's not true. It runs on all the bands. This is just a supposed fix that some internet dudes figured out and shared with others.
Oh....then that's not the "issue" or the "fix". I didn't think that could be true.

I'm really enjoying reading on this thing in bed at night -- between surfing the web, reading the times, and reading books, I find that I am constantly on the thing. My fiancee will likely begin to hate it soon (though, then again, she more or less is constantly on her iPhone...)
Your doing it wrong.

That same thread has 23,000 views, and there are many other threads that have multiple thousand views. Many more will view than register, login and post. Whether you want to believe it or not it seems to be a rather widespread issue. I'm glad you don't have it on yours, would be frustrating to have a nice new toy and have it only partially work.At this point I'm torn between the Courier and the Notion Ink Adam...both probably won't be out until Q3.

Question on the 3g plans.

One is 250mb a month. The other plan is unlimited.

Is 250mb a month much? Can someone put that in more practical terms?

J
Joe - unless you know you will be using the 3g network a ton every month - there is no reason to sign up for the unlimited plan.

You have the ability to switch any time you need - so that if you find yourself up against the limit - you can order the unlimited plan for that month, and then switch back to the 250mb plan the next month.

I am at 200mb on my phone after 30 days.

I will use the ipad more - but most of it would be at home or office where it is wifi and not 3g.

Really the only time you would use 3g is when you are away from a wireless network. I don't think that will be very often for most users.

I will say that traditional media still has a few lessons to learn - I did not download it, but I understand the Time Magazine app retails for $4.99 - but is only good for a single edition of the magazine. It appears that they intend to roll out a new app for every edition - and I can't imagine anyone paying $4.99 for each edition. They probably need to figure out an advertising based model, that could be supplemented by a nominal annual app fee.MLB charges $14.99 for the entire year, and provides updated content daily. I don't know what the subscription cost for a year of Time would be, but they need to come in with a price in that vicinity if they want to make it work.
So you don't feel that it's fair to pay Time Magazines writers and editors to format and write articles for the over-priced toy? Keep it cheap so you can buy all the accessories you need to make it functional?

"Count me in as someone who's having iPad Wifi issues as well,"wrote Michael Arrington, founder and editor of technology blog TechCrunch. "The device works fine near the router, but on the other side of the house, nada. But my Macbook pro and my Nexus One and other various devices I've brought into the house pick up wifi just fine in that area."

"Fair" doesn't factor into it. Except in the sense that "fair" is what the market will bear. I think what he's saying is that $4.99 per issue online is a higher price than what the market will bear.I'm obviously 100% in favor of selling good content on the internet. But it has to agree with the market because the market is right.J

Apple's support forum is being bombarded by 188 user complaints and 20,000 Private Messages

So basically the same as the itouch.

So even though Apple has acknowledged this being an issue, twitter feeds are being spammed you contend it's not a big problem?

I'm an idiot with computers and electronics. But, this thing sounds perfect for my habits and needs at home which is basically something easily transported, surf the web and send emails.

My question is this....I don't own an iPhone and have cell service with Sprint. I do have Time Warner wireless internet at home with my desktop and laptop. Can I just get this iPad, connect it with my present wireless router at home and all set without any add'l charges? Or do you need to have some special extra service/monthly charge?

So did I join at the wrong time? Why don't you counter the issues I've pointed out?

1. Apple has always had a limited codec support which limits it from being the ultimate media device unless you transcode everything you own or repurchase it through iTunes.

2. It's a big piece of glass. You could drop it 20 times and not break it or 1. Don't understand why you even have issue with that. I can't imagine given the size and use that it does not take a tumble here and there.

3. Explain what's so good about the GUI. It really is just a bunch of icons dropped on the screen.

So state your case against these or just don't post.

I looked at my data usage on my AT&T bill for the last 5 months (for my iPhone) in MB:144144121140128I think you would be fine with 250MB, you would only need unlimited if you rarely used wifi or used the 3G to download movies and such (which you should try to avoid since wifi would be better for this).
I was curious - here is my usage so far with 15 days to go, 572,921.8KBIs that 559 MB??? :shocked:ETA: My old laptop had issues when my router had b and g running simultaneously, when I turned off B - the laptop held it's connection better

Wow - the hate runs deep with this one - even if the reading comprehension does not. I never suggested that the folks at Time work for free - but if they want to work at all, they have to re-discover how to make money in this environment. Charging $4.99 per edition will not get it done - imo.Time, and other traditional print media, need something like the ipad to help a sinking industry. They are losing eyeballs to modern technology. This is an opportunity to recapture those eyeballs - and the advertising dollars that flow from that. Most print media badly misplayed the internet - this is an opportunity for a do-over of sorts. As with any media - content is king, and unique content trumps all. So, when media companies produce unique content - they will be able to charge a premium - but only what the market allows.I think Time, and others, need to figure out how to monetize viewers of Apps - and specifically how enhanced features might make advertising more palatable. Advertisers are never going away - they are just looking for better returns on their spends.I have the WSJ app, and for now it is free with my on-line subscription - we'll see how much I like it before I switch my subscription to the ipad app. But, it has 3rd party advertising within the app. It did not feel obtrusive, and was just as easily ignored as it was to click on the advertising. I think this will be the future of print-media on-line - dedicated apps for unique content - on-line access for generic content. So back to Time - this will be a great lesson in pricing influenced by demand. They will figure it out eventually that to maximize revenues they will need to lower the price to get more purchases - or maybe they won't. Maybe they learn that their content is worth $10 per edition - and they will raise the price accordingly. I suspect it will end up in the $1-2 range per edition.

You don't need any plan if you only use it on wi-fi. You would only need the plan if you wanted to surf etc while out and about with no wi-fi

Why not rebuild the actual Web presence that has far more eyes than 300,000?

It's bizarre how you've got a handful of guys in here who obviously dislike the device, and continue to come in and post about how bad it is and gripe about it. Serious question -- what do you guys get out of it? Are you being paid by MS or Google or Android or whomever? Or is it just to troll? I just don't see the upside. The thread was posted so we can share tips/questions/reviews and answer legitimate questions people have about the device. I've given up on trying to defend it to people who obviously don't get or nor care to get it. Go buy something else. It really won't offend us. And you'll be happier. Win-win.

I don't see a response to any of the points. Are any of my points wrong. Just because what you posted was flawed does not mean I hate Apple or think that the iPad does not fill a void for a given set of users.1 is a fact. 2. is going to happen with any device so i still don't see why you have a problem with what I said. 3. Is pretty much a fact also.

Nobody cares about your facts. What's the point in coming in here, pointing out what you deem to be flaws, and demanding that we defend the device/respond to your positions? If you think the codec support doesn't suit your needs, and you don't like devices that have glass screens, and you don't think Apple makes a good GUI, buy another device. It's really that easy. If Apple were paying me to be a salesperson maybe I would try to convince you. But as it stands I've got zero incentive to waste my time.

I'm on sprint and what I did with the one I played with was connect if via my PRE on the go and used my home wi-fi.It worked really well.

To be totally fair - your fishing hard from the outset about how life transformational it would be set the tone for much of that. I'm sure you were just trying to be funny, but clearly you had the intent of stirring up as much as you could. I'm not surprised at all by the anti apple responses given how you started this. :rolleyes:J

Win-win.
To be totally fair - your fishing hard from the outset about how life transformational it would be set the tone for much of that. I'm sure you were just trying to be funny, but clearly you had the intent of stirring up as much as you could. I'm not surprised at all by the anti apple responses given how you started this. :rolleyes:J
Obviously some of that is tongue-in-cheek, but that still doesn't answer the question of what these guys get out of arguing about it. What's the point?I don't care about the Minnesota Twins. I don't go and find a Minnesota Twins thread and spend my day arguing about how bad they are. What would I get out of that?It just doesn't make much sense to me. And it's just trolling when the complaints are things like "well it has a glass screen and could break" and, when Apple is widely known to be the best user interface designer out there, things like "explain to me why the UI is so good."It's ridiculous.

I'll also add that, as noted previously, it doesn't seem to be much of a coincidence to me that the guys who seem to be most vocal about being opposed to this device also have bias based on, e.g., what they do for a living. I think the two guys who have been the most outspoken write Android apps and work for microsoft. You don't say...

Why are you here? We get that you don't like the device. So move on and buy another and go post in the Android tablet thread. No?For something you hate so much you sure are putting in a lot of effort.
The thread title was "iPad it's here". So you don't think anyone else has rights to post in here. You think with that thread title people might come to see what people are saying? To bad you get angry instead of actually discuss the device.1. How do you find the codec support? 2. Where did I say i hated a device with a glass screen? It's a fact of life and I figured pointing out that would show that the review is pointing out the obvious for any device with a glass screen or a screen for that matter. 3. Yeah I don't prefer the interface but have a touch so am used to it. Sorry to bring actual discussions to the thread. After all comments like "I love this thing". "It's magical", "I read it in bed" are very useful. I would think people on the fence would like to see an actual discussion on the pro/cons of the device.

 Why the Minnesota Twins hate? How can you not like Kirby Puckett?

It's not the people that don't care. It's the people that for some reason don't like the product. Be it they think it's overpriced, or too hip or more to the point, arrogant and smarmy. Then when they see posts shouting how life transformational the thing will be laced with "look at me I'm getting one" stuff, it gets the people that don't like the product agitated enough to respond. Again, based on the way you started it, this thread has been one of the most predictable threads here in forever. J
