iPad (3 Viewers)

I know this will be flagged as a hater post by some here. I say to those stop reading now and do not reply.

I was talking to a long time tablet user here at work. He travels a lot and uses a tablet exclusively for note taking. Anyway, he was saying that he could not ditch his current tablet for the ipad because it does not support "inking". To him this is a critical feature on a tablet. He's looking forward to a device like the ipad that does support it.

So for those that have switched, if there are any, from a tablet PC using OneNote are you missing the inking? How big a deal is it to take notes with handwriting versus typing them on the iPad?

Curious to how other tablet converts see this issue and how they previously used the tablet versus how they are using the iPad.
Sure a jailbreak Ipad someone will put an application out that allows you to ink or you would hope so.
I was searching around after posting this. It seems the key to a lot of people is the capacitive screen is not good for inking since it doesn't allow you to rest your palm on the screen while writing. A few people also mentioned that the capacitive screen is not pressure sensitive.I use a moleskin notebook so i never thought about taking notes simply by writing on the screen. Although, in the calendar app I did think it would be nice to be able to jot stuff down there.
Capacitive screens react to skin contact due to the electrostatic field of the body. It would require a device that provides the same effect, a simple stylus wouldn't work.
Sausage stylus to the rescue.
Must...refrain....

why would someone want to write when they can type?Typing is faster, clearer, and easier to read. I can't even really write anymore since there is no point nowadays. It's an inefficient way to take notes.

Because you can write a lot faster than you can type on a screen like the iPad.

i don't agree with that.

Good question. My impression was he is used to writing and it's easier to add drawings such as system flows and such using the pen and paper method. That's the main reason I still use a moleskin notebook. I also try to snapshot white boards for EverNote to consume.Outside that I'm not really sure. Maybe he doesn't like having it in laptop mode and finds it distracting in meetings?

i don't agree with that.
How many WPM can you type on the iPad. My speed is terrible on it compared to a keyboard. I could also write in my notes taking short hand much faster.Do you find the lack of arrow keys a problem? The current iPad fanatics at the office are out today. I planning on trying a note session on it next week.

There are problems. But the two links you quoted have nothing to do with ipad problems. Maybe you should read them first, before you go into your anti otis spiel.
Guy is in a death spiral. If I wrote android apps for a living I would hate Apple too. Can't blame him.

Serously, can anyone who's using the MLB.tv website tell me if you get it on the ipad?
Not a subscriber so I can't tell you. Does it run flash? When I went there for the speed test much of the controls didn't show up.
Pretty sure you need the MLB app. If you already subscribe to MLB.tv all the games will be a available. If not you get 1 game per day to watch. Video is not as good as netflix or abc app, but not bad.

Coming from the guy giving business presentations on a toy device...that hurts!Keep rolling with repeating that I write Android apps for a living, it's working out great for you, and no, those laughs you hear aren't being directed AT you. I just honestly can't believe you are successful at ANYTHING in your life, your posts lead me to believe you are fresh out of high school. Keep going to classes, kiddo, you will learn quite a bit.

He's a kid, give him a break. He may claim otherwise, but the proof is in the collection of his posts. Remember, this is the guy that claims he has an extensive background in IT.

Volcanic ash from Iceland strands Norway's prime minister in NYC airport, so he governs via iPad

Norway prime minister Jens Stoltenberg, stranded in New York after volcanic ash closed airspace overseas, governs the country via iPad.

Icelandic Coastguard

A volcanic erruption in Iceland has sent an enormous ash cloud over European airspace.

Iceland's erupting volcano continues to wreak havoc with flights over England

Volcanic ash from Iceland shuts European airspace

All he needs is an iPad and and outlet to run Norway.

Jens Stoltenberg, the country's prime minister, was stranded Friday with thousands of other fliers at Kennedy Airport by a huge black cloud of volcanic ash that turned the skies over a large swath of Europe into a no-fly zone.

But that didn't prevent Stoltenberg from conducting the daily business of Norwegian government on Apple's newest gizmo in an airport lounge.

Nearby, British Airways passengers were fuming about the lack of information and complaining about shabby treatment.

"It's rubbish," said 44-year-old Sasha Watson, who was trying to get a flight home to London with her two kids and mother.

"They haven't given us a meal voucher, said nothing about a hotel, and the only flights are going to Glasgow -- and that's hours from now."

"I know it's out of the airline's control, but we haven't been given adequate information," added Brian Jones, 48, a London teacher who had been celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary in New York with wife Sara, 47.

"We just want to go home to see our children."

Stoltenberg was later able to catch an overnight flight to Spain. In his latest Tweets, the intrepid PM reported he was riding in a car through southern Germany bound for a train that would get him closer to home.

Meanwhile, the monster cloud emanating from Iceland threatened to upend plans for President Obama and other world leaders to attend the Sunday funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski in Krakow.

Kaczynski, his wife, and much of his government, was wiped out last Saturday when their plane crashed in a Russian forest.

They were on their way to commemorate the murder of more than 20,000 Polish officers by Stalin's henchmen in the Katyn Forest during World War II.

Now Mother Nature appeared to be conspiring against the unlucky Poles, who were forced by Cold War politics to wait more than half a century for the Soviets to own up to the massacre.

The Polish government insisted the funeral was still on and the White House said the President was still planning to fly to Poland.

The skies began turning black on Wednesday when a volcano beneath an Icelandic glacier erupted and spewed a gargantuan cloud of black basalt that blocked the main flight paths between the U.S. and Europe.

By Friday, the arc of grounded aircraft widened across Europe as thousands of planes stayed on the tarmac to avoid the hazardous cloud. Britain, Ireland, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Belgium closed their airspace and 60% of all European flights were cancelled.

"We expect around 11,000 flights to take place today in European airspace," said Eurocontrol spokeswoman Kyla Evans. "On a normal day, we would expect 28,000.

The cloud of volcanic ash is continuing to move east and southeast." Nothing was flying in or out of Europe's two busiest airports - Heathrow in London and Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

And just 20 trans-Atlantic flights reached other European airports Friday morning, compared to 300 on a normal day, according to Eurocontrol.

Christ do you have to miss the point of every single post? I'm not making fun of your line of work; I'm suggesting you have a bias against Apple devices because you've hitched your livelihood to their main competitor.

Don't have a dog in the fight but writing apps on the side <> livelihood -AND-bias <> issues with security features and Apple fanboisHTH.....you should probably ask yourself the same question you ask him about missing the point. You seem to get it wrong more than not.

if you write android apps you pretty much can write Ipad apps.

Android is in Java and Ipad is in Objective-C - Java is derived from C, they are pretty similar but I'm pretty sure if you can do one you can figure out the other quite easily....

just saying

That's fine and all, and at least you're addressing the point. He just got offended, as though he thinks I'm trying to insult him or make fun of what he does for a living, and then tries to make it personal by calling me dumb, childish, a high school kid, and a liar about my supposed background. This thread is a cesspool.

*LEGIT UNBIASED POSTING ALERT*

Here is my list of legit gripes with this device so far:

[*]No arrow keys can be pretty annoying. I don't understand why this was left out, but im hoping they fix it

[*]Typing is somewhat difficult because the keyboard is hyper sensitive. Im getting better at it, but it takes some practice. Also, as you can tell from this posting here, the autocorrect doesn't seem to work the same all the time. I wonder if this is just something i am doing wrong, but sometimes it capitalizes "I" and makes "I'm", and other times not. Weird.

[*]Fingerprints are the devil. Not sure there is anything that can be done about this though, so its not a gripe with Apple.

[*]The wireless thing. It asks me to put in my router password periodically. A minor annoyance and something i assume will be fixed, but worth a mention.

[*]No 3G. Thats maybe my biggest issue, and i could resolve it by getting a 3G version. It's an internet device, and when i was stuck traveling abroad for a week with no wifi access even in my hotel, it was frustrating.

[*]More options in some apps would be nice. For example, i cannot delete pics from it. It seems to just be a slave to being synced to the main computer, so if i want to delete pics i need to do it from my main computer. I think. I may be doing it wrong.

Im still learning a lot about it and im sure much of this will improve as i use it more. It's a pretty great device and im super pleased with it. I find myself carrying it all over my apartment all the time, for music, email, Internet. It is more useful in business than i thought it would be. Great for giving presentations (Card Trader made fun of this, but I don't understand why- if it works, it works, no?), and great for carrying large documents around in PDF format. Book reader is great too.

I notice on my touch fingerprints are much, much worse using the native screen vs a screen protector film. I would assume the same could be said about the ipad.

You can't really call no 3G a gripe with the device.

I can write an iPhone app, and have done so(concept at least), but dealing with Apple's approval process isn't something I've wanted to deal with at this point. I do have an Apple dev account and an Apple to do the work on, but until they change some of their policies (returns for apps, approval lock downs and approval times) I won't be submitting one. Objective C is a pain btw, I find it cumbersome. Much prefer Java and .NET/Silverlight. Windows Mobile 7 has a lot of potential.

I keep threatening to start developing apps as a hobby but just never dove in. My old job I went to a windows, java developer to now a unix based c developer , you think its something I could get started on easily/quickly? Have no idea what I would do but think it would be cool

If you know Java Android will be super easy for you. There are also a lot more resources online for help than when I first started so that should really help someone new to Android. If you know .NET though, check out the winmo 7 sdk.

- the arrow key thing is a bit annoying, but as you said i'm sure they will fix that soon.- I've gotten a ton better at typing on it, it is a whole different way to type but i find myself getting better everyday and am almost as quick on the virtual keyboard as a real one. auto-correct does do some weird stuff sometimes.

- haven't had trouble with wifi at all yet.

- i'm actually thinking of selling my wifi only one on ebay overseas (they are going for $200-$250 more then i paid) and upgrading to the 3G. My only issue is that i don't want to be without my ipad for more then a couple days since i would get separation anxiety. Once they announce the 3g's are shipping i will likely do the sale.

***The biggest issue i have is that it auto-reloads when switching between web pages. It would be much better if it would keep the web page in the same state as when i left it. I wonder if this will be fixed when they roll out the multi-tasking later on this year.

All in all though i find myself becoming more reliant on this device. When at home i rarely ever use my desktop or laptop anymore. It's almost become another appendage when at home.

[*]Fingerprints are the devil. Not sure there is anything that can be done about this though, so its not a gripe with Apple.
Apple could put a finger washer on the side of it... kind of like there's a ball washer on each hole of a golf course. For that matter they could put a ball washer on it.

Stranded prime minister runs country by ipad

(CNN) -- Running a country? There's an app for that.

When Norway's prime minister found himself stuck in New York as a volcanic cloud grounded flights to Europe, he fired up his new Apple iPad and did the job remotely.

In what could be a first for the new gadget, Jens Stoltenberg told CNN he used the iPad to manage the situation at home as Norway closed its airspace under threat from the ash.

A photograph of Stoltenberg using the device was posted on the Internet by Norwegian officials under the title "The prime minister is working at the airport.

"There are good means of communication, I have close contacts with my office all the times, and there are a lot of activities in Norway where we try to reduce the consequences of the volcano in Norway," Stoltenberg told CNN.

"It's very normal for a PM to travel abroad so this is not different from the other travels, it's just lasts some days more than expected. We have the internet, the mobile phone.

"I also use an iPad, which is excellent."

Like many other travelers grounded by the volcanic ash cloud, Stoltenberg has sought alternative routes to reach home, catching a flight to Madrid, Spain before completing the journey overland.

"I am afraid we won't be back before Saturday because I think most of our travel is going to be by car because the most of the airports in the Northern part of Europe are now closed," he said.

Don't count on the wifi password issue to be corrected soon Otis. I've been dealing with it since I got my Touch a year and a half ago. My connection just drops for no reason and I have to go in and tell it to connect again. Or I have to actually enter the network password in again. Been that way the whole time I've had my Touch.

Also, Safari crashed for me a ton when I have multiple pages open and close one of them. Not sure if that problem has cropped up on the iPad, but with the lack of memory in the iPad it wouldn't totally surprise me.

What's the deal with IM-ing on the ipad?

You don't have a phone number on the ipad to IM to, like the iphone.

Do they have a Yahoo Messenger app or something like that?

(not like you could keep it running all the time until multi-tasking is released).

Just wondering...

My 3G ipad probably won't arrive for another 2 or 3 weeks but it would

be great to start seeing a list of great iPad apps from folks who've had their's

for a few weeks.

duh. I am, I guess ;) so, until there is multi-tasking, I guess a really functional IM app (that can run all the time

in the background) doesn't exist yet?

(a quick search shows that there's a pretty slick AOL AIM app for free. looks pretty nice).

Once again, to try to get some actual use out of this sometimes-horrendous thread, any suggestions

for great iPad apps?

- This is one of the things that I used to sell the Mrs. on buying an iPad...

- Playing with the iPad in the store, I really loved Labyrinth 2.

- to tie in with another thread in the FFA, looks like there is a free StumbleUpon app.
