iPad

Holy cow, I just got to use this for the first time.I could easily see replacing our home laptop with this for surfing the web and checking email. My wife already wants one, if I tell her how awesome it is, I'm sure we will end up getting one.The thing is much faster than my Dell laptop for surfing the web and looking at email.
My wife LOVES our iPad (I can't call it mine since it was supposed to be 'Ours'). However, between her book reading, internet and e-mail usage, some nights I don't get to use it at all. I have no choice. I'm buying her her own iPad for our anniversary next month since she's starting to use it at work now. (She's a 2nd grade teacher)
You two have kids? Mother's Day is this weekend, a new iPad from the kids is a perfect gift! :shrug:I gotta stop coming into this thread. Makes me want to run out and grab one every time.
Yep, 1 year old twins. Good call, I'm thinking It'll make a better anniversary gift though. Mothers day she'll get her card, dinner and flowers.

OK, I think you're missing my point. Mother's Day is this weekend. Your anniversary is next month. That's like forever from now.

Clam case

This will be a really nice case.

Looks pretty sweet. My only question is how do you power the bluetooth keyboard? Will you have to charge that too? :goodposting:
Two double AA's in the one I have from Apple. I've seen some made for phones that are USB chargable.
That would be neat. Batteries are teh suck.
Wouldn't the Apple bluetooth keyboard that works with iMac work? Isn't Bluetooth interchangeable?

YEs, bluetooth should work across the board.

Just recovered my iTunes from my dead PC and I'm up to almost exactly 16G. So, it looks like I'm going to need a 32G iPad when I get one. I realize I could not put all my songs on the iPad, but I'd rather not pick and choose what to keep on the laptop and what to move over....too much trouble.

In my continuing attempt to be the morbidly obese Otis, I picked up an IPad to amuse me on my flight to Asia tomorrow night. Now I just have to load it up with John Mayer and wait for Ferris to make a obscene joke.

Don't forget the $500.00 Otis Man Purse to carry it with. Then it is complete.

Looking fwd to your review, specifically if the keyboard is good enough that you don't use another cpu for posting and emailing.

I use energizer rechargeable. It's smart enough to save batteries so no worries and the point of it is to have no cables.

It's pretty damn easy to post. I can do it pretty much as fast as on a laptop.

Well I jailbroke. It took literally less than 90 seconds. It looks exactly the same after rebooting except I have this extra Cydia program that supposedly gives me all the extra programs. Now what?

Go into Cydia and you can search anything, apple apps or non apple apps.I would highly recommend installing Installous

I had jailbroken my iphone, it since has been restored and the new software doesntt have a jailbreak yet (I know I can install an older version and jailbreak that, but I am too lazy). If the ipad has similar, or identical apps, I would suggest the following which make the phone/pad much more user friendly.Backgrounder - allows you to multitaskWinterboard - customize the entire look and feelSBS Settings - adds a drop down menu from the top of the screen that contains useful stuff (wifi, 3G, brightness, bluetooth)Categories - folders for the iphone

My willpower has been completely broken down, I was seriously considering buying one today at lunch. Guess I'll have to hold out a while longer...

Apple stores completely sold out of iPad 3G, furnish waiting lists

By AppleInsider Staff

Published: 03:55 PM EST

Apple's iPad 3G remains sold out in most of the company's retail stores, prompting "Notify Me" waiting lists that will give customers first priority when supplies are replenished.

Ten Apple stores across the U.S. contacted by AppleInsider Thursday were all sold out of the 3G-capable model of the iPad, in all storage capacities. Some of the stores said they were also sold out of all Wi-Fi models, while others had limited stock.

Customers who want the iPad 3G, first released last Friday, can sign up for Apple's "Notify Me" service, which will e-mail customers when the product comes back in stock. Those who sign up for the list have first priority on the iPad 3G, and will have 24 hours to pick up the device when it arrives in store.

Some locations said customers had to come in to a store in person to sign up for the "Notify Me" service, though most contacted said the registration could be done over the phone.

Walk-in customers will not be able to buy an iPad 3G until the store's waiting list has been addressed.

Some stores said their supplies of the Wi-Fi model continue to trickle in, though demand is strong. One California store indicated they received more Wi-Fi-only iPads on Thursday, but have not had any of their iPad 3G stock replenished.

Apple's online store has a waiting list of 5-7 business days for both the Wi-Fi-only and 3G + Wi-Fi iPad models.

The first day of iPad 3G sales was enough to push the device over the 1 million milestone, Apple announced this week. The Wi-Fi-only model was released 28 days earlier, on April 3.

By the end of launch weekend for the iPad 3G, an informal poll of Apple stores found that most were sold out, and supplies of the Wi-Fi model were also limited. Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray predicted that Apple sold 300,000 of the iPad 3G on its opening weekend, though Apple did not provide a specific breakdown of sales by model.

Another survey released this week found that most customers buying the iPad 3G said they would opt for the least expensive 16GB model, starting at $629. The 3G iPad carries a $130 premium over its Wi-Fi counterpart, with the 32GB model costing $729 and the 64GB version for $829.

My god these things are still selling like hotcakes, huh. Most successful consumer electronics/computing product in the last decade? Ever?

Can someone explain the downside of jailbreaking? Is my warranty void? If I go to the Apple store can they tell easily (do they check for it)? Can I reset it back to factory settings easily? Any chance of bricking the iPad?

Thanks. I installed Backgrounder. It's ok. Frankly having multitasking makes me realize it wasn't such a big deal not to have it. At least the way I've been using it.:fishing:I'll try the others this afternoon.

I agree. That's why I havent re-jailbroke my iphone. It does things well enough as is that I dont feel the need to jailbreak it right now.

Regarding the bolded, you can very easily reset it to factory settings and re-sync to the way you had it in iTunes before jailbreaking. Just make sure you do a full sync before jailbreaking. It's apparently very easy to go back. Once you do, Apple will never be able to tell it was previously jailbroken.Re: chance of bricking, that I don't know. I'm not sure what other downside there could be.

Jailbreaking apparently just installs some software that runs on top of the main operating system (at least this is my rudimentary understanding). So, if something goes wrong, you can restore to factory settings from itunes and there will be no trace that the phone/pad was jailbroken.

I've never seen the overwhelming benefit to jail breaking. There's only two compelling reasons for it that I see: 1. Tethering for your iPad, or 2. Pirating iPhone apps. Other than that, I don't see the added functionality as benefit enough to go through the trouble.

If it were any trouble at all, I wouldn't have done it. It literally took 90 seconds. Incredibly easy. And my iPad was apparently identical afterwards, except for one extra icon for Cydia. But yeah, so far I'm not seeing any wow factor here. I was expecting a lot more, particularly after the endless whining from people about Apple's closed garden preventing them from running the apps they really want.

Probably not. Wii comes to mind right off the bat and I'm pretty sure it didn't sell as good as the DS.

Does the fact that these are 2x, 3x, 6x the price of those factor into it at all? Sort of tough to compare a $129 device with a $500-$829 device. I wonder how it plays out in terms of total revenue.

If you're talking about total sales, you're probably right from what we know now. However I think success is a lot more than that.

Some things tip in favor of the iPad:

- People are a bit unsure of the device. How does it fit in to their lifestyle? Wii et al went into a market where people knew what they wanted.

- iPad priced significantly higher.

- 3G released at different time (and, despite what you hear from Goggins, many waited for the 3G; we'll have more numbers of sales later).

- Wasn't released in a holiday season unlike Wii/DS/etc

- 3-4 million total tablet computers were sold annually prior to the iPad (according to the above article). The iPad is pegged to double that alone. That's unbelievable if that happens.

Does anyone know if Sprint's hotspot phones (like the upcoming EVO) only work as Modem's in 4G? Or do they work as modems in 3G? I ask, because I'd be less inclined to buy a 3G iPad if my next phone will work as a hotspot everywhere (and not just in the 4G areas).

I'm pretty certain that Apple will post one of its most profitable quarters this quarter. The revenue they are getting from these devices is pretty staggering.

Again you miss another simple point. I was speaking about the number of people who after buying the first ipad complain / wonder if their ipad will be 3G since it came out soon after.

Apple has something like a gross 60% profit margin on the iphone, which is about double the typical phone margin. I know I just read this a couple days ago but apparently ATT also gives Apple $18 for every iphone in service, every month? Apple's (gross) profit margins for computers and ipods are about double everyone's else, which is astounding if you think about it. It's the "Apple tax" and kudos to them for succeeding with it.Game consoles are generally sold at even or at a loss, they make the money back in games. I think the Wii could be different tho (it's a bit overpriced for its specs) but even if Nintendo was making a profit on the Wii, it's not much.Wii total sales volume is higher but Apple is making way way way more money per ipad sold.

This article is old but I've been catching up on the Fake Steve Jobs blog, which is hilarious. This reminded me of the first couple pages of this thread :(

An open letter to the people of the world

Dear human race,

First of all, you’re welcome. In the last few days I’ve been overwhelmed by your letters and calls expressing your gratitude to Apple, and mostly to me personally, for inventing yet another life-changing, mind-altering product. All I can tell you is that with iPad, as with all of our products, all we did was create something that we want to use. We’re just so glad that you want to use it too. It’s humbling, actually. When you devote your entire life to the endless, selfless quest to improve the lives of others; when you live a monk-like existence, and focus all of your power and genius on the singular goal of creating objects that nourish souls and transform people’s lives with magic and wonder; and when people tell you that this is, indeed, what you’ve done — well, it’s gratifying. Namaste, entire population of Spaceship Earth. I honor the place where your desire to consume becomes one with my desire to create.

Some pundits have posed the question: Why do anyone need this thing? Indeed, even those of you are lining up and standing outside stores may be wondering, Why am I doing this? Why am I lining up like a zombie for an expensive piece of consumer electronics, a product for which there is no shortage and which, let’s face it, nobody really needs? Back in the early days of our design process, Jonny Ive came in to see me and we spent a long time trying to decide where on Mazlow’s triangle this product would sit. Because we knew if we couldn’t be way up above the very top of that pyramid, floating above it, totally outside the needs it describes, then this wouldn’t be a product we wanted to make. Some of our early iterations, in fact, had to be tossed out because when we looked at them we realized that parts of them were too, well, necessary. Don’t get me wrong. That’s fine for other companies. It’s just not what we do here at Apple.

But let’s get back to you people who are waiting in line. I mean it’s not like you’re in Bolivia and there’s just been an earthquake and you need to line up to get food and clean water. It’s not like you’ve time-traveled back into the Depression and you’re waiting in line at a soup kitchen. And yet, in fact, that’s exactly what you’re doing. Spiritually speaking, we are living in the Great Depression, and you are waiting in line for sustenance. We, all of us, are experiencing the world that Deleuze and Guattari described so presciently in Capitalism and Schizophrenia. If you haven’t read this incredibly important two-volume work, I highly recommend that wait for us to make both volumes available on our iBooks store and then order them right away. The cool thing is that then, as you’re reading, you will have the strange and circular experience of discovering why you bought the iPad in the first place.

The truth is, this is all about spiritual emptiness. That is why you’re standing in line. Except for Scoble, who is an attention whore and just doing it to get attention.

The truth is, all over the world, across every culture, there exists a sense of yearning. A kind of malaise. An emptiness. At the risk of sounding like Dr. Seuss: There is a hole in your soul. That is what we’re addressing at Apple. That is the hole we aim to fill. Sadly, as you may have begun to suspect, that hole can never really be filled. The truth is that modernity, the condition of living in our modern world, has inflicted terrible wounds on your inner self. These wounds can never be healed. They can only be treated. At best we provide palliative care. Not a cure. Because, my dear fellow human beings, there is no cure for what ails you. The products we create provide only temporary relief. Their magic eventually wears off. The sense of childlike wonder they impart will, over time, begin to fade. And then you need a new product. Think back to June 29, 2007. Do you remember the rapture? The wonder of iPhone? The magic? Now that is gone, but here we come with another shot of digital Dilaudid. Sleep well, my friends. Sleep deeply and rest, cradled in the arms of my electronic medicine.

I’d also like to take a moment to thank all of the engineers and designers and programmers inside Apple who worked so tirelessly on this product, toiling way in total secrecy. I know it wasn’t easy. You had to work on a machine that was inside a sealed metal box, so you couldn’t actually see what you were doing. The box itself was chained to a desk, which was bolted to the floor in a windowless, lead-sealed concrete bunker. And you were chained to that same desk by your ankle. I know some of you considered it humiliating. I know many of you did not enjoy having to use a chamber pot instead of being allowed to leave the room for bathroom breaks. To be sure, the chamber pot was designed by Jonny Ive and is a model of simplicity and elegant design. Nevertheless, not a lot of fun. I know some of you grumbled, privately, about having your personal email read, and your phone calls monitored. You did not appreciate having your children followed to school and interrogated to see if Mom or Dad had been talking about work. The cars parked outside your house at night, the strange calls to your neighbors and relatives, the questionnaires about your sexual history, the lists of all your past lovers that you needed to provide — I know. It’s not easy to work at Apple. But I think you’ll agree with me that it’s worth the trouble. I honor your dedication, and I hope you will all enjoy the new wonder device that you have helped bring into the world.

Hold your iPad. Gaze at it. Pray to it. Let it transform you. And do it soon, because before you know it we are going to release version 2, which will make this one look like a total piece of crap. Peace be upon you.

Dear Leader

But nobody did complain (save for some guy you found on a message board out there?). That's because it was public knowledge that the 3G was coming. Your point before was that Apple withholds technology for later releases but the example you used (wifi/3g iPad) wasn't relevant in the slightest.

Nope. In this thread as well as countless articles people asked and seemed perplexed that the new 3G was coming out so quick and would their ipad be able to also have 3G as well.

Who was perplexed? From what I can tell, there were a couple of different types of people who bought this thing from the beginning. 1) Didn't want 3G. Bought Wifi. Happy with wifi/magical device.2) Didn't want 3G. Bought Wifi. After playing with wifi, realized 3G would be useful. But you're saying there is a third group:3) Didn't know about 3G. Bought Wifi. Found out about 3G later. Perplexed/pissed off. There were no #3s in this thread. There are no articles about #3. But congrats on finding one somewhere out on the internet though. That's the same place where Jim11, Tosberg and Loki are from -- not exactly the type you use to make your point.

Goggins all along has been trying to make this point, I think, that Apple confused the public and so many people were upset because they were out there buying one version thinking they were buying another. Just bizarre.

Why do you come across as so insecure? If I go buy one I could give two ####s what anyone else has to say about it unless deep down I regretted buying it. You do know I have an iphone/nano/ipod, right Chunk?

No.Apple laid it out there but many either are too stupid or probably too geared up to be the first to have the first ipad. Many people put in their orders w/o even seeing it liveSome people after picking it up act surprised/confused/pissed that the 3G was coming out soon and want/expected that their ipad should be able to have 3G. As if Apple kept this a secret.Surprised that people will buy something and then come across as pretty clueless in what they got. Don't they read the specs / news? I assumed that it was universally known that the main reason you buy a first generation Apple anything is to be the first to get it and damn will know that very soon the next upgrade is a lot better but clearly that's not the case with a number of people.

Why do you come across as so insecure? If I go buy one I could give two ####s what anyone else has to say about it unless deep down I regretted buying it. You do know I have an iphone/nano/ipod, right Chunk?
To be honest, I don't get how any of this is relevant. I'm still wondering about this gem:

And not answering my questions...

running Ipad off Tmobile

In a recent iFixit teardown of the new iPad 3G, it was found to support UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900/2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). Basically it means that it can run on a total of 3 GSM networks here in North America, but it will only support AT&T 3G speeds. Meaning if you decide to run your new $600+ iPad on T-Mobile you would only get EDGE speeds.

Do you realize how ridiculous you're sounding? Didn't your first crack at this 10 pages ago end badly enough? You're saying that there are "countless articles" and people in this thread that are the "clueless" ones. I haven't seen one thing about this imaginary clueless person you're talking about. And if you find some random dude on the internet, bravo. That's by far the exception. By far.
