is diet soda bad for you? (1 Viewer)

I drink TONS of Diet Mt. Dew. In fact, it's probably the only thing I drink most days. I thought I could attribute some of my weight loss to switching from regular to diet. I was about 230 pounds drinking 5 cans of regular Dew a day. I switched one day to diet Dew and started an exercise program along with counting calories. I am 175 now and have been for a 2-3 years. I know most of that is attributed to the exercise and healthy eating. But I still drink diet Dew and haven't gained any weight back even though I've tapered a bit off of the exercise.

I always wondered if diet soda was bad or not. Looking at some of these posts, I think I may have to cut back a bit and start drinking more water.

I've always theorized that Nutrasweet and these other fake sweeteners were bad for you. But I did some Net research and found no proof. There was a rumor that these sweeteners can cause Lupus, but that is an urban myth. I can't stand the taste of these sweeteners, so I am unbiased on the topic. All that said, I can't help but guessing that consuming a lot of artificial sweeteners will be proven to be unhealthy sometime soon.

Hasn't Diet Soda been proven to cause cancer in laboratory rats? I'd stay away.
Don't they typically give those rats so much of the product they are testing that there is no way a typical human could ever consume that much?

technically, yes. it's the equivalent of several cases a day, iirc.that said, i still don't trust that crap.

 
Is diet soda better or worse than Gatorade/Powder drinks mixes(iced tea, kool aid etc)/Capri Sun Juice Box type drinks etc?
Look at the ingredients. If it has high fructose corn syrup it is just as bad for you as a soda. If they contain tons of sugar then they aren't good for you, pure and simple. Gatorade/Powder type drinks vary but the majority of them have quite a few calories/simple carbs due to the fact that they are formulated to give quick energy and electrolytes to someone who is exercising. If you are not exercising then you are just taking on extra calories and sugar. Similar thing with things like Powerbars, Cliff bars, etc. in that people use them as a snack but don't have the calorie demand that the bar is providing at the time.My wife always wants to have a soda or two a day and I always get on her in that I don't think it is a good example for the children and she always fires back that she'll quit when I stop having beer or wine. I keep telling her that when she finds an article that supports the health benefits of soda that I'll consider her argument.

There is no direct link. How can there be? There are no calories. At all. Zero. If you don't take in the calories, how can you be gaining weight?

I'm not referring to the theory that the chemicals in diet soda makes you eat fattening, high-caloric foods that attribute to weight gain.

Overweight Risk Soars 41% With Each Daily Can of Diet Soft Drink

June 13, 2005 -- People who drink diet soft drinks don't lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

The findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. Fowler reported the data at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

"What didn't surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity," Fowler tells WebMD. "What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher."

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas.

"There was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day," Fowler says.

More Diet Drinks, More Weight Gain

Fowler's team looked at seven to eight years of data on 1,550 Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white Americans aged 25 to 64. Of the 622 study participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study, about a third became overweight or obese.

For regular soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

* 26% for up to 1/2 can each day

* 30.4% for 1/2 to one can each day

* 32.8% for 1 to 2 cans each day

* 47.2% for more than 2 cans each day.

For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

* 36.5% for up to 1/2 can each day

* 37.5% for 1/2 to one can each day

* 54.5% for 1 to 2 cans each day

* 57.1% for more than 2 cans each day.

For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a person's risk of obesity went up 41%.

Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

"One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda," Fowler suggests. "But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity."

Why? Nutrition expert Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, puts it in a nutshell.

"You have to look at what's on your plate, not just what's in your glass," Bonci tells WebMD.

People often mistake diet drinks for diets, says Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and nutrition consultant to college and professional sports teams and to the Pittsburgh Ballet.

"A lot of people say, 'I am drinking a diet soft drink because that is better for me. But soft drinks by themselves are not the root of America's obesity problem," she says. "You can't go into a fast-food restaurant and say, 'Oh, it's OK because I had diet soda.' If you don't do anything else but switch to a diet soft drink, you are not going to lose weight."

There is actually a way that diet drinks could contribute to weight gain, Fowler suggests.

She remembers being struck by the scene in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in which Alice is offended because she is offered tea but is given none -- even though she hadn't asked for tea in the first place. So she helps herself to tea and bread and butter.

That may be just what happens when we offer our bodies the sweet taste of diet drinks, but give them no calories. Fowler points to a recent study in which feeding artificial sweeteners to rat pups made them crave more calories than animals fed real sugar.

"If you offer your body something that tastes like a lot of calories, but it isn't there, your body is alerted to the possibility that there is something there and it will search for the calories promised but not delivered," Fowler says.

Perhaps, Bonci says, our bodies are smarter than we think.

"People think they can just fool the body. But maybe the body isn't fooled," she says. "If you are not giving your body those calories you promised it, maybe your body will retaliate by wanting more calories. Some soft drink studies do suggest that diet drinks stimulate appetite."

Not only do I believe it, I know it. Because I drink diet sodas and have lost 12 pounds in the last month.

Absolutely. Diet soda alone cannot make you gain weight.And I'm not talking about water weight either.
First off, you didn't interpret my question correctly and second lets all assume that one does not consume diet sodas alone. I don't think one can survive one diet colas alone.

It certainly does. Pot use may lead to cocaine or acid, but not necessarily. Diet soda may increase cravings for foods you shouldn't eat, but if you resist those cravings, there's no conceivable way diet soda can make you gain weight.Again, research the concept of "calorie" and you'll see it's not possible.

An entire case of diet soda has zero grams of fat...along with ZERO calories.

Absolutely. Diet soda alone cannot make you gain weight.And I'm not talking about water weight either.
First off, you didn't interpret my question correctly and second lets all assume that one does not consume diet sodas alone. I don't think one can survive one diet colas alone.
See you're qualifying a statement that I disqualified at the beginning of this debate. Diet soda can't make you gain weight.

If you regularly drink fruit juice or sugar soda (roughly 100-200 calories per serving) and replace those beverages with a calorie-free diet beverage, and you make no other adjustments to your diet, you will lose weight, not gain weight.

You keep insinuating the theory of diet soda being a gateway to weight gain. But it's like any other vice or addiction. If you drink it and don't allow it to directly effect your cravings, you can't gain weight drinking it.

Dieting Tips

Be aware of what you drink!

It's amazing how many extra calories are in the sodas, juices, and other drinks. Cutting out soda completely can save you 360 calories or more each day. AVOID diet soda too, the artificial sweeteners are probably not good very good for you & they tend to make some people hungry. Drink a lot of water. Switching from whole to nonfat or low fat milk is also a good idea, or switching to soy milk is even a better idea.
