Getting some work done on my car and got quoted a price as well as a cash price which was a nice amount less.   I'd rather not have to go to the bank and take out $700 which would most likely involve a trip inside.   I forgot to ask the mechanic this, but can I just write him a check made out to cash?

I know its not exactly the same, but I thought that in terms of what he's trying to accomplish which is probably avoiding paying taxes, if the check would give him the same result.  I once had a septic guy ask that I write a check out to cash.   I couldn't think of another reason he didn't want his name on the check other than tax related.

Gotcha.  My thinking was that he could just take it to my bank and get cash in return.  Sure there's a paper trail, but its to my account.  There's nothing linking it back to him. Oh well.

Is there a risk with credit?  Yes there's the fee, but the difference in the cash price was way more than any reasonable fees.

Yes, there is a risk with credit.  You are only looking at it from the perspective that you aren't trying to scam this guy.  Fake cards, you could tell your CC company to stop payment, etc.  He has to deal with all those possibilities.  If he gets cash, the only real risk is counterfeit bills.

He could also be trying to dodge taxes, but if it is a legit business with a store front, etc.  Then that is harder.

I'm not saying he's trying to avoid paying all taxes, but shaving a little off of income here and there could save you a few bucks with minimal risk.

The CC fees and risk can add up.  A lot of businesses have a cash price.
