Is Shawn McDonald Det #3 (1 Viewer)

I haven't seen any Det games, but am curios what they are doing with the receivers when Mcdonald is not only outscoring Furrey, but he is getting more targets. Furrey was huge last year. Was just curious if he was demoted, playing slot, or just exactly how they are using these 2 receivers.

He has been the #2 targeted player on the team.

Through three games he has 7 more targets then Furrey and 8 more than CJ and Tatum Bell. Of course CJ was injured last week so the numbers are skewed a bit.

I'm sure Tony Borbely could offer better insight than myself, but at this point I would call McDonald the true #3. He's the one I'd want in a standard scoring league. In a PPR, I might lean more towards Furrey, because I believe he could end up with more receptions, although much less of a homerun threat. I'm at a little bit of a disadvantage because I haven't been able to watch much game film on them so far this year.

There really is no #2, #3, #4 designation in Detroit. It's Roy Williams and then whoever else is subbed in at the time.

I think Detroit has been running 3+ WR sets the majority of games and even 4 WR sets greater than 25% of the snaps played. So you are likely to see many combos that include ROY + 2 of Calvin/McDonald/Furrey.

Why is McDonald doing better? Seems like he gets open the fastest and Kitna trusts him. And Detroit throws the ball so damn much, even in a rotation all the WRs are looking like highly targeted WR#2s out there. It's wide open in Detroit. Bottomline, I think McDonald/Roy/Calvin are an every week start at this point the way the Lion's are looking. And if Calvin is out this weekend, I think Furrey will be a sneaky play because of the increased reps, sub him in.

McDonald is getting open more often than Furrey. He's also getting YAC because Kitna is hitting him in stride on time. He could have had even more vs. Philly. O'Sullivan looked good enough in his time to make me think they will still be an above average passing team if (when?) Kitna misses time. He's pretty much an every week start in start 3 WR leagues.

The Lions are using 4 WRs sets most of the game.

It really does not matter what you call McDonald, he is getting a substantial amount of targets, and is putting up very nice numbers.

McDonald is continually getting matched up against dime corners or LBs. This is an extreme mismatch and Martz/Kitna are capitalizing on it. If teams start to shift coverage to stop him that should open things up more for Furrey. Other than Roy Williams there is no good way to predict which other receiver will have a good game.
