It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1 Viewer)

Great call. Time to introduce the boy to some greatness.
 We have the DVD and watched it over the weekend. How's he doing?

Any cute stories about the li'l tyke?
Awesome. Thanks for asking. He laughed for the first time on Sunday. It was heart-melting. Check the "Cutest FFA Kids" thread for some pics of him in his pumpkin costume in the next few days.

It's the 40th Aniversary, and it is on for an hour (usually only a half hour).. Maybe we will see the uncut and unrated version... :excited:

Nah, they're showing an election episode afterwards, which was made much later and nowhere near as good. It's also on the DVD.

My 4-year-old daughter has been watching the DVD of "Great Pumpkin/You're Not Elected" for about a month now. It's interesting to watch her watching these shows, and taking into account that its all new for her. I can just barely remember those times ... but it's like reliving it all again with her.

She likes to pump her arms the way Snoopy does when he's pretending to shoot down the Red Baron. :lmao:

I'll get a second go-round of all this ... my son is just 14 months old.

BTW, while "You're Not Elected" may not be the classic that "Great Pumpkin" is ... wasn't "You're Not Elected" the first TV appearance of Snoopy as Joe Cool?

Worth it for the music alone, a real classic. Schultz > Disney
You're (pea)nuts. There are four great Charlie Brown animated shows in my book:1. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown2. A Charlie Brown Christmas3. He's Your Dog Charlie Brown4. Charlie Brown's All-StarsThe rest are just okay or downright awful.

Not sure, but could be. When did it come out?
1972, if I'm making out the Roman numerals on the DVD correctly. I'm sure Joe Cool was in the comic strip before then ... just meant TV.An Election Day special seems kind of weird in retrospect, but I do remember when they tried to push political awareness onto children in the 70s and early 80s. I guess that was the "hippy" influence on education and children's media at the time.

ETA: According to Wikipedia, You're Not Elected was the first TV appearance of Woodstock. That, I didn't know.

When I was a kid, I remember watching the Charlie Brown specials and they were always sponsored by Dolly Madison desserts and my local grocery store NEVER carried them.

GD never tasting any of those tempting little dessert cakes.

I think these are all horrible. What's with the whole Snoopy/Red Baron schtick? Charles Schulz was one f'd up individual.

Terribly sorry to hear.Snoopy ruled. The Red Baron RULED. And Joe Cool / Mackin on the chicks? Gotta love THE ORIGINAL snoop.

Are you seriously leaving off the great race? Seriously?
Great flick. Also like "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", where he went to the national spelling bee in the big city. Loved when a kid spelled a word wrong, and the mumbling teacher voice obnoxiously said "WOHNG!", with the kid's face disappearing.

No love for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving?

I love it when Snoopy gets into a fight with the lawn chair in the garage.

Watched this with my 3 year old tonight, he laughed a little bit. I always remember looking forward to these when I was a kid. One thing I forgot, my God Lucy is just the nastiest little thing on the planet!

It was okay, my kids liked it but it isn't even in the same ballpark as the classic Disney movies.

Watched it again with my kids. In the beginning Lucy is watching TV with a TV guide in her hand when Linus walks by. Guess who is on the cover?

It's her! Never noticed before.

I'm going to pick this up.I've read a bunch of reviews; Schulz was not a happy man.

Lucy is based on his 1st wife.
Not a hijack, but maybe the link I posted in this will give a schedule of when this broadcast will air again.http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...p;#entry7623243

I watched the show with my daughter last night.... which was sweet, because she was actually asleep the whole time. Anyway, for some reason, I liked it better last night than I ever did as a kid.

I have already said "Oh, good grief" at least 4 times today.

My kids watched it last night and laughed a lot (10 and 7 years old). Snoopy dancing to Schroder's piano playing got the biggest laughs.

I think Snoopy has the funniest laugh of any cartoon character. Every time he laughed, I laughed.

The second half-hour was very lame compared to the "Great Pumpkin".

If It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown ever gets on DVD, let me know. Or the Valentine's Day special.

If you check out these specials on Wikipedia, you'll see there were dozens of them. A lot of them were only shown once or twice.

That was with that cute, sassy little-red headed girl, right?
I looked that one up yesterday -- that was It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown. I think there's a separate Charlie Brown Valentine's Day special ... LRHG might be on that one, too.

Last night my 10 year old said it sounded like the characters were reading out of a book. Very observant.
Tough audience. On the parent note, I always wondered why they never showed any parents on the show. Must be another Schulz quirk.
