Jamal Lewis released by the Ravens (1 Viewer)

I could definitely see another team grabbing him before the Ravens get to a chance to get him back (that is, if they want to).

The Ravens have waived running back Jamal Lewis, general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome announced today.

But, just one day before the start of free agency, that doesn't mean that the seven-year veteran won't don a Ravens' jersey in the future. Newsome expressed his desire to re-sign Lewis sometime this offseason.

"We are involved in negotiations with Jamal, and there has been good dialogue," said Newsome. "Jamal has been a significant contributor to us in the last seven seasons.

"It's our hope to have him back with the Ravens."

Ravens | Lewis waived

ESPNews reports the Baltimore Ravens have waived RB Jamal Lewis.

per KFFL

I expect the fact that he can't run anymore to affect his market value.
He's far from the 2000 yard rusher we saw a few years ago, but he still could provide value with another team looking for a complementary bruiser-type back.
Like as in... New England?Personally I'd rather just keep Dillon, but you know, I'm just sayin'... :goodposting:

This was perhaps the most predictable release of the off season. His best option for playing time would be with the Ravens I think, but he might make a little more money elsewhere. I could see a heavilly incentive laiden contract for him to stay in Baltimore. I think it's likely he'll re-sign with them.

While I agree that there's at least a decent change he ends up back in Baltimore, I can't help but wonder what would be the point for Baltimore.

Assuming they would not go into next season again with Jamal/Anderson/Musa*, and I can't imagine that they would considering how unspectaculr their running game was this year, they would be looking then to add via free agency or the draft a pair of fresh legs to help carry the load. I remember last season, or maybe even earlier this season (or both) that whenever Lewis sucks he seems to say something about how he's a 20-25 carry back and he needs all those carries to "get going" and stuff like that.

Given that attitude, just doesn't seem like BAL would be excited to bring him back to a platoon type situation. He'll just start #####ing about not getting his carries, no?

I don't see The Sweatshirt Leader signing him, he doesnt fit into the 'character' mold that Bill generally goes by.on a side not, Mangini and the Jets have the cap space, and as much as I dislike J-Lew, he may actually fit in well with that offense. (Washington could play the role of quickness, with J-Lew as the Power short yardage type)

Dare I say it? He could go to Pittsburg and play in a Bettis type role. Not sure if Jamal is prepared not to be paid like a starter.

I don't get to see him all that much, but despite the size Lewis has, I don't think he's as bruising a runner as the "Bettis type role" would require.

I'm expecting many Musa Smith owners to jump ship in the next 24 hours and sell him off if they can get any value.

Excellent advice. This is definitely not, in my opinion, a sign that Musa Smith will ascend to the starting role. Find someone who disagrees and get a deal done ASAP.

:goodposting: I've seen this correlation many times around here. Big RB does not always = great short yardage runner. Going by admittedly anecdotal evidence, Jamal Lewis got stuffed much more often than expected inside the 5-yard line the past two seasons. And it's not for lack of opportunity. It's in the Ravens nature to try to pound the ball once they get near the goal-line, and Lewis just couldn't produce in those situations with any degree of consistency. The injuries that have remaindered his explosiveness combined with the trademark stutter-step style have left him a poor short-yardage back.On a related note, I want to say there is a bit of scapegoating going on with Jamal Lewis though -- considering it was Billick who completely abandoned the running game in the 2nd half against the Colts. This after Lewis was gashing the defense going into half-time. On the other hand, I think Billick was judging the runner rather than the situation. He showed confidence in Lewis half-way through the season by canning Fassel and the tinkering with Musa Smith & Mike Anderson. He put all of his eggs in Lewis' basket whether by loyalty or necessity. And it worked just enough...right up until the biggest half of football the Ravens have had in years. And when the going got tough, Billick realized he didn't have the runner he needed to succeed in the backfield. He realized Jamal Lewis is a shell of his former self. He took all of the eggs out of Lewis' basket and placed them ever-so-meekly in McNair's basket, only to have McNair thoroughly crush them. Where that leaves the rest of his offense going forward is another problem. Now Lewis has come out the past few weeks and claimed he's finally getting over the ankle injuries that have plagued him the past few seasons. That could be the case, and maybe he has some life left in his legs after all. I'd lean more towards contract posturing and the fact that no athlete, especially of the professional variety, wants to admit to himself (much less to the general public) that he just doesn't have it anymore. There's a chance that Lewis could get back to 85-90% of his old self, but I don't believe it will happen. As of mid-January, Billick didn't believe it was happening either. Right now Billick has visions of a better power runner in his backfield, but he just doesn't know if the Ravens can acquire that runner just yet. I think he's just hedging his bets with Lewis. Even if he re-signs with the Ravens, it's clear that Billick now considers him merely a place-holder or a fall-back option rather than the power runner around which the Ravens can successfully operate their offense.

NEXT :Willis McGahee ?
not to beat a dead-horse-theme, but what about Michael Turner in Baltimore?he's a big RB like Jamal ( 237 lbs), great inside runner, terrific hands.I know its a much overplayed topic, 'where's Turner going..?" but Baltimore, imo, would be a great fit!

so by releasing Jamal today the Ravens give him an extra day or so to visit freely any team correct? He can sign before the FA period begins right, so I wonder if anyone calls him right away.

I think Atlanta would be a great spot for him. With no Duckett, the short-yardage situations were a real problem last year. The new coach is scrapping the zone-blocking in favor of a power run block game, and is looking to limit Vick's carries. Lewis, Dunn, and Norwood would be a terrific backfield.

Plus, Lewis has up-close-and-personal knowledge of the Atlanta nightlife scene. :goodposting:

So, what are the chances he's picked up by another team rather than re-sign with Baltimore? Why wouldn't another team claim him off waivers? Before you answer "because he sucks", he is just 27 and is probably better than a lot of retread starting RBs out there.
