James Jones future? (1 Viewer)

Tough call here. Driver isn't getting any younger, but he said this week he wants to play 4-5 more years. He's obviously declined, so I think you'll start to see more opportunities for the young guys.

However, Jones seemed to be passed over earlier this year. He missed some time with a knee injury. But he was then a healthy scratch a couple times. Jordy Nelson was the benificiary. Now, it may have been based purley on special teams play, but anytime a guy is a healthy scratch, it makes me nervous.

Best I can say is he still has a lot of potential in this offense, but the situation is still extremely cloudy.

I think in terms of talent, Jones >>>> Nelson. But he has to prove he can stay healthy. I have no idea what the Packers think, but Jones looks like a playmaker to me.

Nelson is a good football player. I think he'll be a jack of all trades type. I agree with the poster above that James Jones is more talented as a wide receiver. Jones has absolutely fantastic hands, he's as tough a nails as well. He's been dinged though this season. It is only one season though and I think if he stays healthy he'll be part of the equation at wideout for several years. With Driver increasing in age, I could see Jones relegating him to the slot in the coming years.

Jones does not have great speed, he's more like an Anquan Boldin where his game is body position, hands catching, and powering through corners and safeties. He's not on Boldin's level (yet) and he may never be, but that is a player who I'd compare his game to.

I really like James Jones, but it is looking like Nelson will be in Driver's spot and Jones will remain in the slot.
I see it the other way around. Jones has huge hands and is a Boldin/Sterling Sharpe like WR.People keep denigrating Driver, but he's a workout warrior. If not for a few bad throws and dumb penalties he would have had a good year.I think 2 more years.

I think his injury was the issue this year.McCarthy called him the most improved (or one of the most improved) of the young guys the other day.Driver's age will play into it...but of course he still wants to play for a while.Alot will depend on this offseason too. How much will Jennings want? Will he do it the right way and not demand things and threaten holdouts? I think Ted will pay him...if he does not get all Javon Walker on him.

Jones has been compared by Favre to Sterling Sharp as well. Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal said yesterday on his daily interview with a Milwaukee radio station that he thought it "a possibility, though not a probability" that Jones overtakes Driver in the near future. Bold statements as I still think Driver is underrated and a great asset. WR 1-5 Packers are probably deepest in the NFL, though they don't have a Fitz type game breaker currently (Jennings is like a Harrison clone IMO) that everything is fed to when times break down.

I think next year Jones could break out. He was having an excellent off-season (any Packer fans remember that pre-season game where he got hit on a deep cross, helmet comes off, and he runs in for the TD without the helmet?) and even though he's had some issues with clean catching, he's still known as having great hands.

It's hard for me to say this as I'm a big Jones fan, however I think that Jones is a candidate on the short list of players that Thompson would trade this offseason. Hopefully I'm wrong, however Jones would thrive as a #1 WR in Tenessee or Jacksonville.

Edit to clarify that I am a huge Packer fan and can see the talent Jones has. I always say during Packer games that if Jones and Martin are involved the Packers are probably going to win the game.
