Friday injury report: Starks getting his shot?

GREEN BAY – It appears those Green Bay Packers fans clamoring to see rookie sixth-round pick James Starks are about to get their wish.
While coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that he and his staff “need to talk about” whether to have Starks or Dimitri Nance active at running back for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, the players involved are under the impression that it’ll be Starks backing up starter Brandon Jackson.
“I should be playing, from what I know, special teams and everything. I should be good to go,” Starks said after practice Friday. “I’m excited. I can’t wait.”
Nance practiced in full for the second consecutive day after sustaining a concussion against Atlanta last Sunday on a third-and-1 run. Although he’s been cleared medically, Nance said he’s under the impression that the coaches want to give him a week off and go with Starks instead against the Niners after working only scout-team plays and not being on the top special teams units in practice.
“I might (be inactive). There’s a good possibility,” Nance said. “I think it’s just a safety issue. I am fine, but I guess they just want to make sure I’m 100 percent safe. I can understand that. I’m just going to continue to play my role.”
If Starks is in fact active and plays, it would be his first game action since the International Bowl for the University of Buffalo on Jan. 3, 2009. Starks missed all of his senior season with a shoulder injury and missed all of training camp and the preseason with a torn hamstring, suffered in the pre-camp conditioning test in July. McCarthy acknowledged earlier in the week that there’s some uncertainty about Starks until he absorbs an in-game hit for the first time, but he’s got to get the chance sooner or later.
“I get hit by my teammates (in practice) so I’ve been getting used to that,” Starks said. “I’m used to contract. I’ve prepared well for it to simulate getting hit. Every day in practice, that’s what we train for, with strips and the defense constantly trying to get the ball from me and I’ve been doing a good job. I’m going to be conscious of it. Just hold the ball high and tight and just play. I’m a running back. You’re going to get hit.”
