The Cowboys left the door cracked open just a tad for Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten to actually play on Sunday against the New York Giants with the cracked rib he suffered in the Tampa Bay game.
Even though Witten has not practiced all week - he didn't again on Friday out here at The Ranch - the Cowboys are listing him as "questionable" for the 3:15 p.m. (CST) game at Giants Stadium. More than meaning he is technically 50-50 to play on Sunday, at least the Cowboys created the possibility of the team's leading pass catcher participating against the Giants rather than declaring him out or even doubtful. The NFL frowns on players listed as "doubtful" on Friday suddenly improving enough in two days to play on Sunday.
Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said Witten would travel with the team on Saturday to New Jersey and that the final decision on his playing status would be made on Sunday, just before the team has to turn in its eight inactive players for the game.
And when asked if Witten would need to practice to participate in the game, Phillips didn't hesitate to say, "No."
Witten's ability to obviously manage the pain he's been in all week from the cracked rib will become the deciding factor if he is able to on Sunday or if the tight end snaps go to Martellus Bennett and Tony Curtis. Bennett received the majority of the snaps this past Sunday against Tampa Bay when Witten suffered the fractured rib in the second quarter, participating in 55 plays.
Witten, who has 46 catches for a team-leading 549 yards, has played in 83 consecutive games, last missing one his rookie season when he suffered a broken jaw.
And according to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who commented about Witten's status Friday morning on The Ticket (KTCK-1310 AM), "It's really a painful thing he's enduring, and knowing him, we know he will try, and I think he said it best, everybody else has to get ready if he can't go."
