Javon Walker to lose starting job in Oakland?

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin hinted that he'll consider moving Drew Carter or Ronald Curry to split end if Javon Walker doesn't step up his play.

Walker hasn't performed since signing in March. "If it becomes something where Javon is not playing as well as we need him to play, both of those guys have learned 'X' so they can go over there," Kiffin said. "I expect Javon to have a big (third preseason) game. I'm putting in a game plan, and he should see some balls early. Hopefully, he'll make some plays." Aug. 19 - 8:37 am et

Is anyone actually thinking of drafting him?
I was....until I saw the game on Friday and before he considered retiring and all the other stuff that has gone since he joined the team. The short of it is I was excited when he first signed. I think he is/was a very talented receiver. With the anticipated very solid running game, I was hoping a Russell to Walker connection could be very tasty in 2008 as defenses would have to cheat up to try and stop the run. But watching his play on Friday, I am very disheartened. Unless I see a major change, I will be staying away from Walker.

Considering the money involved - Worst free agent signing ever.
I thought so at the time and that was assuming he was going to start. If he doesn't start it will definitely be the worst. I still can't understand why the Raiders gave him so much money given his situation. I know crazy Al and all but still it just made no sense at the time and just a couple months later looks to make even less sense.....

It may just be me but I dont think Kiffin is helping the situation by constantly bringing up Javon's money and how much he gets paid. Everybody out there is getting paid why harp on one players salary?

Just my .02

What would you expect from Carter or Curry if Walker is benched? Would they be worth picking up with a young Russell slinging the ball?

In my opinion, those comments are aimed more at Al Davis than Javon Walker. Kiffin has had several such comments expressing his displeasure with the way the team is managed and his own lack of control over his own roster. Unfortunately, I suspect this may be his last season as a Raiders coach unless Davis keels over soon.

Thanks for the insight. :lmao:

I drafted him in the Metro Sports expert league a few weeks ago. But I claim temporary insanity as my realtor called me mid-draft to tell me our offer on the new house was accepted. I couldn't focus on the draft for a few rounds and next thing I know I'm grabbing Javon Walker. :lmao:

I drafted him in the 10th round as my WR4 in a start 2WR league. I figure if he doesn't do anything, I can drop him, but if he gets his head out of his ######, then he was a value. I may regret it but probably not. 10th round picks are usually flyers so I figured I'd take one on him.

I signed him to a 2 year deal last year. :bag:  :lmao:

Don't think I will be picking up his option. At this point he's looking more and more like WW fodder than a guy I would consider starting

At least they made up for it by signing Tommy Kelly to big money too. :P

He could have got the vetern minimum and it would have been a bad signing. The guy has no drive to play the game anymore. He seemed to be barely going through the motions in the Tennessee game. As a Raider fan I am not even bothered by the money to be honest. I only worry about the product the team puts on the field. It's up to the business side of the team to make sure they can afford the move. The worst part for me in this is that his signing meant that the Raiders didn't go after any other WRs (other then Carter - thankfully). Had they not signed Walker there still would have been a need to bring in somebody else.

I just can't believe the FO convinced him not to retire

and pay back the signing bonus, when JW stepped up with the offer.

This move is actually worse than the original signing,

as they decided to keep the expensive garbage.

Baffling.

I wonder if his lack of motivation is partially because he knows he is not physically capable of playing anymore.
It's hard to know whether his head or his knee are his biggest problem, but at this point I don't care. He's nothing more than a name at this point, and I won't be putting him onto any of my rosters.

Seems like every myopic Raider fan in each of my leagues has drafted him (or wanted to draft him).
Just my guess, but you wont be facing off against a team with a lineup with the name "Javon Walker" in it in the Championship game.
I won a championship last year with him on my team and he only played in 2 games :lmao:
He only played two games...You knew you couldn't trust him so he sat the bench...right where he belongs. THAT is a large part of how you won. Walker is done...

Well it is obvious then he was dead weight on your otherwise good roster. Perhaps I should have been more clear and wrote "starting lineup". Granted I know everyones leagues are different and you may have some crazy team with all superstars and Javon Walker. But in most ordinary leagues, Walker was not in the starting lineup in any leagues for the past couple of years and I HIGHLY doubt that changes this year.

Agree. Granted, it was only a few plays but he really looked like he'd rather be somewhere else. I was shocked. He really needs to come next pre-season game. Kiffin says he's game planning stuff for him.

Yes, like some floaters over the middle in front of a speeding linebackers and perhaps some jump ball floaters for the safeties to tee off on him.

Do you realize how good he looked in those two games?I've got to wonder what everyone would be saying about Walker if he were still with the Broncos? The fact that he doesn't have anyone throwing to him doesn't help perception of the guy. Couple that with some motivational coach speak in August and now the guy isn't worth the league minimum? Come on....

Yes, he was dead weight, although with as good as he looked early on I would've probably gone undefeated with him in there. I only lost 2 games. My main WR was Edwards who was a throw in on a deal from a year ago that was still under contract. But my WR2 was a WRBC of Crayton, Curtis, Henderson, and later Berrian from the WW when I cut Henderson. That is not a quality set of guys. I got really lucky by starting Crayton against the Rams and got a couple of nice games out of Curtis. But my WR2 was UGLY all season long.

Raiders' Walker turns it on at end of camp

NAPA – His coach might not like it, but maybe Javon Walker just doesn't practice well.

Raiders coach Lane Kiffin tried criticizing the wide receiver through the media, calling out Walker for being overweight and for not practicing enough.

It didn't bother Walker.

"Obviously, coach Lane, he's a new coach (for me) this year, and he really doesn't know me," Walker said. "Basically, all I know is what (I've) done against him in games. … Being critical? I've been through way too much of that. I know me, and I know my body, so the only thing I could say is if (the criticism) was something (Kiffin) would really harp on, put on the (video) tapes and watch what I've done."

Kiffin, though, doesn't really care what Walker did before signing with Oakland, and it's not exactly how he wants his presumed No. 1 receiver to think.

Kiffin's message might not have inspired Walker to do more during training camp. But Walker finished camp strong.

Walker is now visibly enjoying himself – just as training camp is ending – no longer appearing to be uninspired. The Raiders broke camp Wednesday.

Walker's turnaround was first noticeable when the Raiders practiced with the 49ers in Napa on Aug. 4. And since last Friday's exhibition opener against San Francisco, Walker has continued to look better.

Not bad considering this turnaround came days after he told the team he wanted to retire after struggling at the start of camp.

"It's just in my competitive nature to where once you start playing games, even out here, I start getting really, really amped," Walker said. "I've got to learn to really start toning myself down because it still is preseason. … You see your defense (every day), so it's good to go against someone different and let your frustration out on them because you're not going to let it out on your own team."

Walker's new outlook has not gone unnoticed by Kiffin.

"I've been very critical of Javon throughout this camp and throughout the offseason, and he's had a string right here of the best practices he's had," Kiffin said. "He looks to be in the right frame of mind lately, and so if we can continue to work on that and push that, it's going in a positive direction."

Walker said any issues he was dealing with last month are behind him. He's excited about playing at 206 pounds after being around 220 pounds most of his career.

"I'm doing something that I truly love and am excited about taking it into the season," Walker said. "It doesn't get any better than that."

Unless Kiffin brings back two-a-days to shake things up, Wednesday's practices were the last time Walker will have to worry about the coach lamenting Walker's non-participation in both sessions.

Walker said he relied on the medical staff to tell him when it would be OK to practice twice in a day.

And he isn't worried about how much he practices.

"Getting ready for the regular season is all about getting your body right, especially a body like mine and what it's going through," Walker said. "Two-a-days, yeah, you can get out here and work, but you've got to know when to tone it down. You just don't want to do so much out here to where you go into the game and everything is bothering you.

The guy is being crucified for 1 dropped ball(which he should have caught) and 1 ball that he had no chance of catching from what I saw.(Although the announcer said he should have) All of a sudden the guy doesn't know how to play anymore. Well I go thim on the cheap and I'm not really worried about all the negative talk about him. Every offseason the media chooses to find a few guys to be negative on and Walker seems to be one of them. Just like LenDale and Moss last year......this is one of my favorites.....(Rotoworld) Javon Walker was held without a catch in the Raiders' second preseason game.Analysis: Walker had the ugliest drop of the preseason so far after getting good position on an inside slant on third-and-two to kill Oakland's first drive. If Lane Kiffin's correct and Walker's mind is right, you wouldn't have known it on this play. Walker remains virtually undraftable in 10-team leagues.Ugliest drops... seriously? Catches and drops are not important to me at this point of the season, especially with a proven HANDS guy like Walker. The fact that he was able get open and make that move is all that concerns me.

Excuse me, boys? This thread is about slamming Javon Walker and the Raiders. not each other.

If you've got nothing bad to say about Javon, then maybe it's best to move on.

You can call them hissy fits. But hey, you are throwing out these inane posts. I'm just pointing out how inane they are. Walker was just found a couple of weeks ago unconscious in the gutter and then comes out and has a couple bad preseason games so the Raiders should just cut ties with him and their $16 million and move on? Seriously, you need to get a clue here. They would probably be panned more for cutting him before the season and throwing away the money than they have been for signing him in the first place. Maybe think through your posts a little more....
TheFanatic,You really seem to know your stuff and I enjoy many of your contributions. But you do this A LOT. Whether you call them hissy fits or worse, you often come across as a major jerk. You attack and ridicule anyone who dares to know less than yourself. I'm not sure if you're like this in real life or if it's just an unitentional message board persona but you should really tone things down.

Randy Moss was also being talked about as not starting last year around this time.

Clearly we can accept he's losing value, but don't say he's done just yet. This is a common mistake I feel on these boards -- assuming someone is DONE or has ZERO value, etc.

:goodposting: NOBODY (with a job) has zero value. That said, I've been avoiding Walker all summer, and I'm pretty glad of it now. I think Curry is the value play in Oakland. He's a solid veteran who is really only just now coming into his own as a WR.

Well, getting back to my original point, AZ has Boldin who deserves Walker-type money and will not get it in AZ. Walker has Walker-type money in Oakland and suggested retiring and giving it back. According to some recent articles it seems like he is now recommitting to football, but if you ask me his statements from the latest article imply a sense of entitlement rather than a renewed committment to the game. Is it impossible for the Raiders to reopen discussions of him retiring, talk with AZ, and work something out where Javon retires (maybe give him the incentive of a portion of his bonus) and they make some kind of trade with Boldin and sign him to a longterm deal that he deserves? Seems like it would kill two birds with one stone.

I will agree with you here. The problem is it makes too much sense, so it will never happen. Besides, I think Walker may have figured out that he would seriously cut down how many years of champagne spraying he will get to do in Vegas if he gives back all or a portion of that skrilla.I really think that this was just a ploy to motivate Walker. Kiffin may have been calling him out in TC and he wasn't responding. But when he calls him out in the media he may have decided to kick it up a notch and actually try to earn that K he signed...
