Raiders | Porter intends to void remainder of deal

Mon, 31 Dec 2007 09:10:04 -0800

Steve Corkran, of the Bay Area News Group, reports Oakland Raiders WR Jerry Porter intends to void the remainder of his current deal and enter free agency.

Porter hasn't done much in a few years, but with not much to speak of in terms of FA WRs, he could land another nice deal in a more favorable spot. Think Plaxico a few years back, but with a bit lesser value accorded to him.

As for the Raiders - what do the homers think? Russell will need time to develop and will assuredly bring in some weapons (Berrian?). And while Curry wasn't overly impressive this year, does he have what it takes to be the go-to guy?

I cannot wait for the day that Porter is no longer a Raider. I have waited for that guy to break out year after year. Granted last year's results/situation was outside of his control. But I am convinced that Porter is the slowest WR in the league. Bar none.

As Zamboni mentioned Berrian is available next year. I hope the Raiders are able to land him and put some real speed on the outside. That way Curry can go back to running the routes that suit him. Berrian, Curry, Higgins and Miller. I would be ok with that grouping.

I agree he'll land somewhere with a decent deal. The guy just has no shake to him. While he proclaimed he was in the best shape ever coming into 2007, it did not appear that route running was part of his workout regiment. Running straight line sprints during your time off isn't going to make you a better NFL WR.

As far as Berrian, fully expect him to be franchised.

Too much time banged up early in his career, always had a sense of entitlement.

He morphed this past year into the sage, steady vet, a year after showing up at camp with what appeared to be a wrestling title belt.

Not sure I buy it. Probably best for him to move on at this point.

As for Curry, we'll see. Not his best year this season, although he didn't blow his Achilles, which is nice. But that fool jumped offside at least 9 times this year. Not a #1 WR, IMO.

 i would have liked to see more young guys play this year, russell, higgins, bush. i just don't understand why kiffin didn't look at them in game situations. the team sucks, let's see what we have in place to make it better.

Kiffin wanted to win as many games as possible his rookie year. I think his focus was turn around this "just lose baby" culture that has become the Raiders, much more than worrying about evaluating young players. I'm sure he feels he has OTAs and training camp to do that.In today's SF Chronicle Kiffin vowed a lot of changes. He's not going to accept players who aren't committed to winning first and foremost. I think it's a good thing for Porter and for the Raiders that he moves on voluntarily.

My take on WR values with Porter going elsewhere:

Porter -- unknown (Will depend on where he goes of course, but perceived fantasy value probably will be up between now and when he signs somewhere. Probably a good sell opportunity if you own him)

Curry -- can only be up

Higgins -- probably up (At least until we hear from Kiffin whether JLH gets to start or whether a FA will be brought in)
