Job Interview-"We'll let you know either way" they don&#3 (1 Viewer)

My guess is your first choice likes you but likes someone else slightly better and is negotiating with them now. After all those interviews theres little reason why you should have to wait another 5-7 days for an offer.

Take the current offer and call your first choice and tell them to #### or get off the pot (in nicer more professional terms of course).
This. I waited three weeks last year in a job I thought was a perfect fit. They were telling me the same thing then went quiet. Turns out they were talking to someone else that they liked better as I was waiting.

My approach is maybe suited to my tech field, but I don't stop looking until an offer is made. I assume nothing and keep going until it's done.

NV, if/when you get the offer from your second choice - AND you are willing to accept it - IMO you should by all means tell your first choice you have another offer in hand. That should help light a fire under the first choice.

If your first choice is truly interested, then they will hopefully get moving to offer you the job. If they say thanks but no thanks, then you know where you stand and you were not really their first choice anyway. The only tricky area is if they say "we like you, but we just can't move that fast" - then then you may have a tough decision.

Take it one step at a time once you have an offer in hand IMO...
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to letting them know they're my first choice?
Yes, you tell them they are your first choice and you would love to work there provided they can make a comparable offer. However, let them know you will be accepting the other offer as of (fill in the date). If they say "we like you but we just can't move that fast" than you should immediately accept the other offer as you are not their first choice. I've been in the recruiting industry for 20 years and 9 times out of 10 there is zero reason a company can't move to offer on a candidate everyone agrees they should hire. If there is a delay, there is either disagreement over whether you are the right choice, another candidate they like better (or was just recently added to the mix and they want to vet) or budget issues preventing them from pulling the trigger.

Got a return phone call once and was told I am their guy. Got to talking a little and they hadn't even looked at what fields I could teach. Turns out they had no openings in what I could teach they just looked at my coaching credentials. So I get told to give him an hour so he can try to slide some things around and create an opening and he would call to schedule me when to come in. I am still waiting on that call 5 years later.

How people so incompetent can ascend to a position of hiring people is beyond me.

Bumping this for another round of advice. One of the 3 companies I've interviewed with told me I would be getting an offer, then asked my salary expectations, after which they told me they were going to go with a candidate which is a "better fit". Not a big loss, I knew they were the lowest of the 3 compensation wise, which is why I wasn't afraid to ask for at least what they others would offer.

I had the interview with the VP sales of my first choice last Tuesday. They told me 5-7 days I would hear back from them, so we are in that window now. I know the salary for this job but don't know about mileage, benefits, bonus, commission, etc...

I had an interview with another company on Tuesday as well. They asked if I was interviewing with other companies and I said I was. They laid out for me the salary/car allowance/mileage/benefits right away (they're impressive, and they know it... I think they wanted to eliminate the competition to some extent). They then called me on Thursday and said the process was taking a couple days longer than they expected but I was their top candidate and I would hear from them early this week and to let them know if I received any other offers in the meantime. Today they called and told me I will be receiving an offer by the end of the day.

Money wise, this company may beat my first choice. I like that they've aggressively pursued me and kept me in the loop, where I wait weeks at a time for my first choice. The reasons I still prefer the other one are

1) the product I would be representing - it's an internationally known brand that has gone through major growth and continues to grow.

2) the territory - it covers a large area and I have no doubt it will continue to be strong and viable for a long time

3) No cold calling - this product is already everywhere, so it's more about promotion/shelf space than finding new vendors.

Once I receive the offer from the 2nd company, how do I approach things with my first choice? Is it as simple as saying, "you are my first choice, but i have received another offer"? I also need to get back to the offer in a reasonable amount of time, so how do I do that without pressuring the other, or do I want that pressure.

The offer is going to state a start date of August 6th, so in theory I have until then with my first choice but I don't particularly want to accept an offer and then go back on it before I even start.

TIA.
Are you willing to share what industry these Sales jobs are in? Nothing too specific, but for example is it Consumer Packaged Goods?
One of them is, yes. The other is gas/fuel/oil related.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice in this thread. I accepted an offer with my first choice this AM, starting there August 18th
