Joe Staley Injury (1 Viewer)

It is reported that Joe Staley, the 49ers starting LT and former #1 draft pick is out for the next 4-6 weeks.Gore still seemed productive in the late moments of the 4th and in overtime.

What sort of impact do you think this has on Frank Gore?

and

Does anyone know what side of the line SF generally has a habit of running against?

Don't know the answer to your question, but he should be fine this week vs. Tampa Bay, who is #31 vs. the run and #30 in yards/carry allowed. Like you said, Gore was just as good without him at the end of last week, so I wouldn't worry too much. Troy Smith should help him out the rest of the way as well, keeping defenses a little more honest.

Honestly don't think it will affect him much. Staley is a more quick than mauling blocker and is counted on more as a pass blocker to protect the Smiths' blindsides. They started Wragge in his place, which surprised me considering Barry Sims did an admirable job at LT last yr when Staley was out. For wks 9-14 that Staley was out last yr, Gore posted impressive YPC against the likes of TEN, CHI, GB, and ARI so I wouldn't be too concerned.

What worries me more about Gore is how he's asked to stay in the pocket to pass protect alot more as opposed to flaring out for dumpoffs now that T Smith is QB. It wasn't until really late in the game that he was asked to go out for passes where he reeled in 3 rec and 67 yds in their final go ahead drive. Hopefully the coaches are doing this to take the D's attention away from Gore. THe last drive should be evidence enough that Gore is at his best as a dual threat out of the backfield.

For now, coach Mike Singletary indicated he would choose Barry Sims or Adam Snyder as his new left tackle. Snyder sustained a sprained shoulder against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, but Singletary said "so far, so good" when asked if Snyder would be healthy enough to play this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sims has been on the inactive list for eight of the team's nine games this season. He performed admirably as a fill-in a year ago and made seven starts after Staley suffered a sprained knee.

"I think Sims stepped in last year and did a very good job," Singletary said. "So I think I see no reason why he wouldn't do a good job -- either him or Snyder."

Tony Wragge stepped in for Staley in overtime Sunday and helped pave the way for the 49ers' winning

However, the injury to Staley means we will more than likely bear witness to the return of Barry Sims to the 49ers starting lineup, covering Troy Smith's blind side at left tackle. Sims replaced Staley in the starting lineup last season when Staley injured his PCL and MCL and had to miss the last six or so weeks of the season. In an interesting twist, Sims was arguably the team's best offensive lineman during that time and certainly outplayed Staley, who had some ups and downs.

bump... 88 people read this and nobody had anything to say?
Goodson put up 100 on Tampa Bay. There is no excuse for Gore not to do even better, with or without Staley.

As others have said, Staley has had trouble staying on the field throughout his brief career and Gore hasn't been affected. Don't worry about it.

Looks like they abandoned the running game pretty early in this one, even though they weren't really down that much until late. Never seen a team with so much talent on offense look so terrible.

This had nothing to do with Staley.

Troy Smith is a DISASTER for Gore. He is downright awful. On one of the few plays I watched, the play broke down (of course) and Gore was standing there wide open in the middle of the field, jumping up and down and waiving his arms. Smith instead throws a near-interception to someone on the sideline.

Gore may become benchable at this rate.

To be fair there were 20+ mph winds at the stick yesterday. Those are tough conditions for any QB, let alone one running for his life on a regular basis.Freeman was only 13-20 for 136 yards. He got two TDs too but they were both short because the wind was making long completions difficult for everyone. With those winds both defenses were keying on the run and daring teams to pass the ball. Gore had a bad game. Blount only averaged a shade over 3.1ypc on 26 carries. It was a tough offensive day for both teams, it happens.Smith wasn't a disaster for Gore in his first two starts (125 yards, 1TD vs Den and 154 yards, 1TD vs StL).
