John Clayton: Could Benson take over starting RB job? (1 Viewer)

Bengals turning to Benson: The stage seems to be set for Cedric Benson to take over the starting running back job in Cincinnati. Chris Perry is struggling with fumbles and low production. Now that Benson has a good handle on the system, it seems inevitable he'll be the starter before long.

Not this week against the Steelers.

Longterm, maybe the starting RB (I still wouldn't rule out Watson getting a shot at some point) for the Bengals might be an OK RB3 if Palmer can stay in the lineup. If Palmer's out, the only Bengal I'd give any starting consideration to is Houshmandzadeh because the only thing Fitzgerald can do is throw short passes so T.J. should continue racking up the receptions. Everyone else on that offense would be dead to me.

Put a waiver claim on Benson in one league. Cutting J. Charles from KC so it is no great loss either way.

Would you rather have Benson or Torain from here on out? I like Torain's upside more than Benson IMO

"The stage seems to be set for Cedric Benson to take over" != Benson taking over.

Don't doubt though that Perry will be replaced.

Does Watson have herpes or something? ??
Well, according to Rotoworld from earlier today, it doesn't appear so(or at least he's between outbreaks, anyway):"(Rotoworld) Kenny Watson drew praise from coach Marvin Lewis for his practices since his return to the Bengals.Analysis: "I thought Kenny had a good week of practice." Lewis said. "You know, he practiced a week ago Friday and then this week, so we've got to look at everything." Lewis has made a couple of "we need to look at things" statements in regard to the Bengals running game, so it's not out of the question that Watson could see some action or even start against the Steelers."Bottom line, unless Palmer's at QB none of these guys is probably going to be doing much in the way of production.

Don't have a short memory span on Benson. Any owner who had him last year will tell you to stay far FAR away, and with good reason. What did he average, 1.2 yards/carry with Chicago? Exaggeration, maybe, but I'll never touch him again in FF. Why Cinnci didn't try to get somebody like S. Alexander is beyond me; sure, Alexander may have little left to offer...but he has something to offer. If Cinnci is intending Benson to be a starter, they already know their season is done.

What exactly is this a quote of? I ran a google search and was referenced to your post, and a post on a Bengals message board.

FWIW, the quote about Watson's practice is in reference to his hamstring.

AND KENNY? Running back Kenny Watson rejoined the roster last Tuesday after an Oct. 4 release. Lewis was asked if Watson's prior hamstring injury was still an issue.

"I thought Kenny had a good week of practice. You know, he practiced a week ago Friday and this week, so we've got to look at everything," Lewis said.

Lewis is looking for an offensive spark. He's not ruling out anybody.

"We owe it to everybody to find a way to get more done," Lewis said.

Are they moving Perry to the offensive line? Until they stop getting pushed backwards and letting guys in the backfield before the RB has a change to make a cut, it doesn't matter who is running the ball.

I grabbed them both over the last couple weeks. Neither will start for me (I have MBIII, Portis, with Fargas on the bench), but I will be using the best of the two in week 10.If I could only have one of them, I'd take Torain.

Are you trying to set a record for the most number of topics started without actually giving an opinion?

I read Perry did not practice yesterday in FBG Player in the News. Is it a done deal that Benson starts this weekend?

not calling him out, but worse yet was he started one on a player, maybe Hasselback, then started another. :goodposting:

I saw that too, curious to know from any Cincy homers what's going on? I realize the going opinion is no matter who's the RB in cincy, they will suck, but it would be interesting to see Benson get a crack at the gig.

Perry returned to practice yesterday. I've been trying to find if there's any indication who's taking the first-team snaps in practice. Any Cincy homers who've seen any indiction where they might be leaning?

All signs out of Cincy say full blown RBBC this week. They are more than likely going to completely abandon the run this week. It has been the Bengals contention for years that the Steelers are vulnerable to the downfield passing game. Unless the game dictates otherwise, they may not run the ball more than 15 times.

If that is the case, Benson might have the worst stats of the 3.
