Julian Peterson traded to the Lions for Cory Redding (1 Viewer)

Seattle has traded linebacker Julian Peterson to Detroit for defensive tackle Cory Redding and what is believed a 2009 fifth-round draft choice, a source told FOXSports.com.

Redding agreed to restructure his contract to make the deal work. He signed a 7-year, $49 million deal with the Lions in 2007.

Peterson, 30, has been named to three straight Pro Bowl teams and five total.

Peterson — who attended college at Michigan State — spent his first six years in the NFL with the 49ers before signing with the Seahawks as a free agent in 2006.

The deal raises questions about Detroit's draft-day plans. The Lions hold the top overall pick and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry had been suggested has a candidate for that spot.

Anthony, who do you think this puts at the Mike?

I personally don't think this year's starting MLB is currently on the roster. I will not be surprised if they draft Curry and put him there, but that's up in the air. I do think a first day pick will be used for a MLB.

If Detroit takes Curry at #1, this would be one of the better and most athletic LB corps in the league IMO. Still would need to get some beef in front of them though.

THis seems like it could be a significant bump to Leroy Hill's value no? Seems sure he would assume a 3 down role now...

Not positive yet. Ernie Sims is a 3rd down backer for sure and so is Peterson but I believe if they draft Curry it will be a committee. All 3 would be able to play nickel packages.

Sorry, I was referring to Leroy Hill who was left behind on Seattle. Previously, it wasn't clear if he was going to stick in a 3 down role, with Lofa and Peterson sticking on 3rd down with Babineux and others taking out Hill.

I heard they (Seattle) was very high on David Hawthorne, perhaps they will use him in the Peterson type role? I don't know much about him, just what I read last year.

Why won't Peterson move inside? Why the Lions would take Curry after they already traded for Peterson makes no sense. If they don't trade down, which apparently there aren't many takers for the asking price, I'd think they would still take THE QB, if not OL help and take Sanchez perhaps with Dallas' pick later on in the first.

Yep - sure seems to me like making a move for Peterson would signal NOT using 1.01 on Curry... but then this is the Lions so who knows

Peterson doesn't have the skillset to play inside and in fact, that would kill his biggest asset, which is rushing the passer. As for Curry, he could probably play any LB spot, so drafting him is not necessarily bad. We still have a glaring need at MLB. I basically believe the Lions are keeping all options open at this point. MLB is still a top priority and I expect it to be addressed early on the first day, if not first overall.

i know Julian has been uber versatile in the past(especially with the niners), but when has he ever played MLB for more than situational use? even after losing a few steps he's still a very effective SLB. his best talent is rushing the passer, he may not have as many chances now as most offenses they face will be running it down there throat

I was pimping Hawthorne last pre-season, and I think his development paves the way for this move. Hawthorne simply showed up every time I watched games in pre-season.However, Hill can flat-out play, and will likely be a 3-down LB. Getting him & Tatupu in the same draft was a quick way to fix a LB group.

I'd like some more info on Redding. I'm thinking he was one of the Lions' better players - partly because I know who he is.

Not so much from an IDP perspective, but how it helps 'Hawks along the DL.

i have seen a few mock drafts that had Seattle going to DT in R1. now, with this trade, i'm not sure they will.
