Julius Jones Update Thread (2 Viewers)

Source: Running back is wearing walking boot to protect injured ankle11:43 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News IRVING – Running back Julius Jones was wearing a walking boot on his left leg Tuesday and the Cowboys are preparing as if he will not play Sunday, a source said. Jones missed the second half of the Cowboys' 33-10 win over Philadelphia because of a high ankle sprain. Jones did not practice Wednesday morning. He and injured linebacker Dat Nguyen (neck) rode stationary bikes instead. If Jones can't play in the important NFC East game against the New York Giants at Texas Stadium, the Cowboys could start rookie free agent Tyson Thompson, an Irving High School graduate, or veteran Anthony Thomas. He injured his ankle while being tackled by linebacker Mark Simoneau for no gain and limped off the field with 18 seconds left in the half. He then limped to the locker room for X-rays. Jerry Jones said the second-year running back has not had an MRI exam. The Cowboys signed Thomas in the off-season in case of just such an injury. After all, Julius Jones missed part of training camp last year with a rib cartilage injury and missed seven games with a broken shoulder blade. Hey, noob, you may want to refrain from calling board members douches. You won't be around long if you keep this up. And learn a little FBG etiquette. Things happen quickly around here when it comes to deciminating information to the readers of this forum. If one thinks he has some breaking news, one should take the 2 seconds it takes to check the front page to see that there aren't multiple threads about the topic as in this case. And to be really safe, do a search on the topic.

Oh, and if you see someone who didn't bother to do the first item before posting and someone points out that it's old news and a search should've been done, refrain from name calling.

Everyone who has a vested interest in the Dallas running game read this post thinking something new came out and groaned when they read the first few lines of a story that was in at least 2 other JJones threads that I know of.

Nothing wrong with being helpful, but a little common courtesy is good too....

Tidbits gleaned from listening to Parcell's Wednesday press conference:He basically said that he doesnt expect JJ to be out for long. He doesnt think its too serious. If JJ (or anyone) doesnt practice by Friday, he won't play.If a guy can play, he will play. Parcells won't wait for him to get to 100%.If JJ cant play, they won't alter their approach. He feels very confident in the other guys. (no big surprise here)He thought Thompson's 20 carries was good for him. He doesnt worry about Thompson's endurance. TT is improving in his blitz recognition and assignment responsibilities, but is still unpredictable. My best guess as of now from reading between the lines is that JJ won't play against the Giants but will the following week. If JJ practices by Friday, however, expect him to suit up against the G-men.

Nope ... he's not a noob. Recently changed name from Drink21 I believe.

I don't really know how Parcells handles his players with serious injuries, but I can't imagine he would call a high ankle sprain "not too serious." I also read into this that TT is a great guy to pick up - that "20 carries is good for him" statement has me intrigued.

Remember, TT performed *very* well last week. Yes, he had some late ball control problems, but more than 4 yards a carry is nothing to sneeze at.He's in back of a good line, in a running system that can pass if needed.

You're not going to get a lot better than that off the WW.

Nothing on Kevin Jones (concussion), Corey Dillon (undisclosed), Julius Jones (ankle), etc., etc.Looks a lot like last week's report, with this week's matchups.

More of the second. This should've been locked a long time ago. There's 10 other threads with much more information about the subject.

Your right. Guess they havn't updated it yet. Strange they would have this posted though.

I realize people  about pinned threads, but with 10 other threads started on Jones, can we just pin this? Or at least pin whichever J Jones thread has real news in it.

Bah, my wire has already passed. I got TT without having to give up my spot.So obviously, since it doesn't matter to me, it doesn't matter.

Seriously, though...I think 90% of FF players don't realize what's going on...and about 40% of sharks. If you have a roster spot that's not doing much, why not just pick up TT on a flyer?

I don't even know why I started responding, but I've come too far to not post this. Anyone ever do that?

FWIW, I also listened to Parcell's press conference and he went out of his way to state that he had NOT made up his mind who would play/start if J.J. is unable to go. He said he'd be looking at practice films the rest of the week and would make a decision on Saturday. He also spoke of having a "talk" this week with Anthony Thomas in which Parcells basically told him "what my expectations are." Didn't sound too thrilled with Thomas, IMO. Regarding TT, he did say he didn't have doubts about his durability but said he was "unpredictable" and talked about him missing some assignments last week. I think the smart money has to be on TT at this point but I doubt we'll hear anything official before the weekend.

Some of you guys are unbelievable...true I asked at the beginning of this thread, any news on his status. But the news we have been given so far shows all systems go on a replacement for Julius Jones in week 6. If you think anything else, you are: 1) ######ed, 2) eat dung for breakfast, 3) are in last place in your league, or 4) have Julius Jones and are posting on a hope and prayer.Jones is not starting in week 6. Reported by RabbitRabit.newsource.com :)That's all you need to know.

Well okay you may need to know which replacement back to use. You use Tyson, moron.

The latest from the Boy's website...

IRVING, Texas - There has been a lot of talk this week how Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells changed his approach to Sunday's win over the Eagles, deciding as late as Saturday night to come out more aggressive against the high-scoring Eagles. While that plan certainly worked out fine for the Cowboys, Parcells might have to make more last-minute changes again this weekend. And not because he's unsure how to attack the Giants, but more so because he's not exactly positive who will be starting at running back. Second-year back Julius Jones missed portions of Wednesday's "team" practice with a sprained ankle, an injury he suffered in the first half against the Eagles, forcing him to sit out the entire second half. If Jones, doesn't go, look for the Cowboys to turn to either rookie Tyson Thompson, who had a career-high 20 carries against the Eagles, or veteran Anthony Thomas, who was signed in the off-season as an insurance policy for this exact situation. Parcells didn't, and likely won't reveal his contingency plan before Sunday's noon game at Texas Stadium, saying he might even use both Thomas and Thompson, and maybe even all three backs, which would include rookie Marion Barber. And he's not ready to rule out Jones, either. "If he doesn't play we'll be ready," Parcells said. "We'll be ready. I'm thinking someone else will play if he doesn't play. It might be more than one. We've been using more than one. I'm kind of hoping he will." But it would seem if Jones can't play, the Cowboys will use some sort of combination of Thomas and Thompson, who got a "dose pack" of playing time last week, relieving Jones in the second half. That doesn't mean, though, Thompson will get extra practice reps just because of his inexperience. "We'll get him ready, don't worry about it," Parcells said of Thompson. "We'll get him ready, whoever it is. I'm not telling you who it is because I haven't decided yet. I'm going to look at the practice film and see what happened. I'm going to look at the practice film (for Thursday) and then look at the practice film Friday and then Saturday night we'll decide who's playing and that's exactly what I'm going to do. To do something in advance of that wouldn't be too smart." Parcells might not be revealing his intentions for Sunday's game with the Giants, but he did mention a recent conversation he had with Thomas, who has been frustrated with his limited role in the offense. Thomas, who even hinted at desiring a trade last week, had been inactive for two straight games before suiting up against the Eagles. However, despite Jones' injury, Thomas had just four carries for five yards. "I just had a good talk with him this week, earlier this week," Parcells said. "I told him what my perception of things was and what I thought his perceptions should be. I think we're on the same page exactly. "It wasn't exactly a two-way discussion. I hope so because I was trying to give him real good advice. Real good advice, something I truly believe to be the situation. I would never try to tell a player something I didn't believe to be true. I would never do that. I told him exactly what I thought where he was in this world and I'm hopeful he's receptive to it." Thomas, who has just nine carries this year for 14 yards, admitted he has been frustrated with his lack of playing time. But he also acknowledged Parcells' stance on the situation. "We had a talk he did most of the talking," Thomas said with a smile. "I just sat back and listened. When it's a guy of his stature, you sit back and listen. He has a lot of knowledge. He is trying to give me some of that." And maybe because Parcells knows he might really need Thomas and his experience this week. If Jones doesn't play, it's unlikely Parcells would rely on a pair of rookies - Thompson and Barber - to carry the load against a formidable NFC East opponent such as the Giants. When Thomas was inactive those consecutive weeks against San Francisco and Oakland, Parcells dressed both rookies as the backups, but mainly to acquire more speed and for special teams purposes. However, Barber hasn't played much in the kicking game, and didn't run well in his two short-yardage attempts against Oakland. As for Thompson, he has struggled with his blitz pickup and recognition, but wasn't asked to pass block much against the Eagles, considering the sizable second-half lead and that Thomas was coming in on third downs. While Parcells called the rookie "unpredictable," Thompson vows to be ready and make the most of the opportunity he's getting in practice. "I've been getting reps with the first team right now . . . we're trying to maintain without Julius," Thompson said Wednesday. "Hopefully, if he gets better, he's in there. If not, then I will be ready." And Parcells isn't too worried about Thompson when he has the ball in his hands. With 31 carries this year, the rookie from San Jose State has 114 yards (3.7 average), and he also ranks second in the NFC with a 25.5-yard kickoff-return average. He also said Thompson's second-half duty last week should help him if he's asked to carry the ball more this week. And even though Parcells isn't about to divulge his game plan for the Giants, the coach insists the club won't be limited in its approach against the Giants if Jones is unable to play. "Why would it limit us?" Parcells fired back. "You think we're not going to call plays? I don't think that will limit us. That happens in the league all of the time. Players go out somebody else has to fill in. (The Giants) know these kids can run the ball. (The backups) ran the ball all preseason. They can run it. We'll be all right." What he doesn't know is if "all right" will be good enough against the Giants.

Another thing that no one has brought up is that last season, while a Bear, ATrain racked up 110 yards and two td's at the Giants. Gotta wonder if Parcells has that in mind. Also, if he had a one on one talk with Thomas, he may be trying to get him ready for a larger role. That at least shows that he sees some value in Thomas.

I'm sure this has been discussed and the site has been ripped before on this, BUT you can't write the word r-e-t-@-r-d-e-d ????What is this elementary school ? This is just so off the wall, it made me laugh out loud when I came back to see the updates on Julius Jones.Okay, I will back off my stance somewhat -- Thomas had a good game against the Giants last year -- that does count for something. I back off on Tyson is a god for this week, not that Julius is for sure out. Julius is out.

Here's another article about the Dallas RB situation. It more or less supports my contention that if JJ is out TT gets the majority of the caries.

Jones' status in question

Tyson Thompson working with the first team

By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

IRVING - Asked earlier this week if he was leery about playing rookie running back Tyson Thompson in place of the injured Julius Jones in the second half against Philadelphia on Sunday, Cowboys coach Bill Parcells gave the old wolf analogy.

"You know the expression 'throw them to the wolves'?" Parcells said.

"Sometimes you're ready to put him out there if you think he's got a little wolf in him. And I think he might. He certainly does when he has the ball under his arm."

With Jones missing practice Wednesday with a sprained left ankle and listed as questionable for Sunday's game at home against the New York Giants, Parcells might get to see just how much wolf Thompson has in him.

Jones still might play. Though he rode the bike and worked out with the strength coaches Wednesday, he walked under his own weight.

"I don't even want to think about him not playing," receiver Keyshawn Johnson said. "But if I know him, he is going to play. I don't think he wants to miss this one."

After the 33-10 blowout of the Eagles, the Cowboys could strengthen their position in the NFC East with a victory against the Giants. Parcells said the Cowboys need to show some consistency by putting some wins together.

Jones is the team's featured back, and Parcells is hoping he will be ready to play.

"If I think the player can function, I'd play him," Parcells said. "If I don't think he can function, I wouldn't. But I need to see anybody practice."

Parcells has yet to make a decision on who would start if Jones can't play. But he said the offense wouldn't be limited if Jones is sidelined; the same plays would be called whether it's Thompson, veteran Anthony Thomas or rookie Marion Barber in the lineup.

All three are getting reps in practice.

Yet, Thompson, an Irving native, is getting most of the work with the first team.

Jones leads the Cowboys in rushing with 407 yards on 112 carries. Thompson has 114 yards on 31 attempts, including a career-high 20 carries for 75 yards against the Eagles.

Thomas has carried the ball nine times for 14 yards this season, while Barber has 1 yard on two carries.

"I feel like I am getting more confidence and, hopefully, that is the same with coach Parcells," Thompson said. "We are trying to maintain without Julius. Hopefully, he will be ready. But anything I can do to help the team is great. I am looking forward to the opportunity to show what I can do."

While the speedy Thompson has been very impressive with the ball in his hands, Parcells said his inexperience and limited football background make him unpredictable, especially with blocking the blitz.

Thompson, who signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent, played two years at Garden City (Kan.) Community College and one year at San Jose State.

"I'm glad Tyson had been in some games," Parcells said. "I think [the Eagles game] was a bigger learning experience for him. We just have to get him up to speed on everything."

Thomas, a four-year veteran and former two-time, 1,000-yard rusher with Chicago, can handle the blitzes. Thomas signed a $1 million contract last spring to be Jones' primary backup. But he has gotten few carries and has been inactive for two games.

Thomas has voiced his displeasure, even wondering aloud about possibly being a better fit somewhere else.

A one-sided conversation with Parcells has him more accepting of the situation and ready to contribute if need be Sunday.

For those who don't follow the Cowboys closely, Parcells has occasionally used the wolf analogy. He used it when talking about the QB situation last year (Play Henson or not). He said it was evident that Lawrence Taylor was a wolf after about 30 seconds. For Parcells to say that TT has some wolf in him, is high praise. Parcells really likes the kid.

In all honesty, I don't care who Dallas has at RB so long as they maintain the aggressive style of offense and win. Thompson, Thomas, or Garo Yepremian. Whatever. Just win.Even though I'm a Thomas owner :bag:

I agree with that play nice -- my comments were not directed at anyone person -- more in the line of showing how blinded or insane one has to be to think Parcells and the Boys aren't playing it coy with Julius Jones' injury status. But I'm not here to debate the merits of members being able to use the word r-e-t-$-$-$-$-$-$. I sure is it not tabled for debate either. :) His boards, have them run like he needs to run em.Anyone see any more news on Juluis Jones actually having had the MRI on Monday and Jerry Jones being full of "waste material"???? :)

Tidbits from Parcells' Thursday afternoon press conference:1) He won't name a starter until this weekend. Any of the 4 guys on the active roster (JJ, TT, Atrain, Barber) might start. All are being prepared to play.2) TT would continue to return kickoffs. 3) He likes TT because he "passed the test". He proved that he has heart. For those not close to the Cowboys, "the test" is when Parcells give a back about 10 carries in a row in a preseason game. How a guy responds to getting tired like that tells him about his heart.4) He talked about developing a pass-receiving threat out of the backfield and that is a role that he wants Barber to develop into.5) If the rookies are playing and they make lots of mistakes, they will be replaced.6) He and the coaches got on TT about his fumbling and not "finishing the run".None of these comments changes my estimation that if JJ does not play, then Tyson will be the starter. Barber will be the third down guy, and Atrain will get a handful of series.I will further add that, if JJ is out, Bledsoe will see either minimal effect or will be hurt. Defenses have been keying on the run. Whether defenses fear TT as much as JJ has not yet been determined. I would not be surprised if defenses tried to force Dallas to run more since that part of the game is not as proven (without JJ) as the passing game. If that does happen, TT could have a big game.

I listened to most of the press conference as well and gathered the same things. Bill is playing his usual cat-and-mouse game with the injuries (like any good coach should) and not declaring what is or isn't happening.Look for Witten and/or Keyshawn to be in the backfield at the snap more than usual this weekend to help stave off the pass rush. Keyshawn proved last weekend that he is a very adept "chipper" off the snap while moving into the flat.

Cowboys running back Julius Jones missed a second straight day of practice on Thursday, but head coach Bill Parcells told the team's official web site that the second-year player is "improving a little." Jones remains questionable on the injury report due to a high left ankle sprain. Parcells also informed the Dallas Morning News that the team would continue to be "pretty careful" with the injury. The coach added that he would not make a decision on his running back situation until Saturday night.

I look at it this way..I have JJ..but he is banged up a tad..and there are 2 other RB's there that can do the job this week (not great of course against the NYG rush Def.)..and Bledsoe is hot (against the poor NYG Passing Def.?)Sit him this week I'am. :bye:
