Just a hunch, bench Calvin this weekend (1 Viewer)

I watched both the Lions and Panthers game last weekend. Obviously Calvin was hurt by 2 extremely unprepared QBs in C-Pep and Stanton. I would assume both should be better off with a full week of practice. That being said, we all know how bad that line is, and several times both QBs got pressured and either threw INTs or were sacked. Next week, they face Peppers, who has been on a tear as of late.

I have a hard time seeing either QB having time to target, much less complete many passes to Calvin.

Again, I'm a HUGE Calvin fan. Own him in 9 of 10 dynasty leagues. I've started him every game this year. This weekend, I'm not.

Anyone else have this same hunch? Or can you give me logic to overcome this concern?

I'll be playing him regardless of matchup for the rest of the year. The guy has the talent to hit a homerun on any play, and lets face it...Detroit will always be playing from behind in the second half. I thinkHe will be on par with recent games. 3-4 catches for 80-100 yards.

I also don't have any better options

you have a hunch that cj? might not be such a great play w/stanton or notsohotpepper throwing him the ball?

I also have that hunch.

What game were you watching?

Every league is different and I'm not saying I like the match-up, but all of my the leagues where I own him are start 3 at WR. It's tough to build a team where Calvin isn't even a WR3 regardless of match-up. It's a whole bunch of 'meh' outside the top 30 or so. I can't really see me putting in, say, Isaac Bruce for CJ.

Unless you have really ridiculous options I'd always play Calvin. In my start 4 wr league I'm playing Calvin, Jennings, AJ and Breaston...

CJ is an auto start due to his talent, I don't care if Ryan Leaf came back to throw to CJ, I still start him.

FF 101 always play you STUDS

Is it necessary to have a thread like this every week?

We even had one before the season (Calvin Johnson ready to blow up?) where many posters were telling us why Calvin CAN'T succeed, and yet, all he does is continue to put up solid numbers.

"Concerns about Calvin"

"Can Calvin succeed without Kitna?"

"Megatron with Culpepper"

Blah blah blah...

I think the problem is that we all see his talent and know that he could be an absolute monster, but he's just a solid WR1 every single week because of the players around him. Look at the turmoil in that offense the last few weeks, and then go look at Calvin's numbers. How can you bench him?!

It's getting harder for me to be optimistic about CJ in a PPR. I realize he can put up monster games at any time, but he's having a hard time cracking my lineup (AJohnson and Marshall are must-starts, and Colston should be a steadier option going forward). This thread at least makes me realize CJ still has significant value, and might be worth floating in trade talks.

I was thinking this same thing as far as sitting him. I would be putting him in a Wide Receiver/RB slot. So I could also plug in Sammy Morris who is on my bench as well.

Of course, this is just a feeling, which has bitten me before as it has with everyone in Fantasy Football once and a while. I will probably just go ahead and start him, though that Carolina matchup is not my favorite especially given the turmoil at QB for the Lions. I have Engram on the bench who I've been holding onto when Hasselbeck comes back which is going to be this coming weekend. I'm more tempted to take a wait and see on that one though.

My other receivers are Hines Ward,Camarillo, Bradley, Welker.

Right now I am leaning towards starting Santana Moss, Breaston, Bowe, and MAYBE Ocho in front of him in my 9 leagues.

Only 10 Dynasty leagues?

noob

A lot of overcoaching of lineups going on in this thread. The guy has at least 90 yards receiving or a TD in each of the last five games.

After Calvin only got a few targets Week 8 he was clearly #1 in the game plan in Week 9.

Last week with the green QB debacle they were running the offense through Smith but this week I think Calvin will see more targets.

Peppers is the kind of guy that will destroy the Lions but I think Calvin will get his.

I plan to start him over Bowe & Holmes.

I can understand that move (benching and/or trading) with the talent you have + a PPR league. With that many quality WRs on one team, there have got to be some teams hurting at the position.

I have him in 2 leagues, both start 3 WRs:

Standard scoring w/ 1 PPR - Boldin, CJ, Holt, Driver, Engram

No PPR but bonus @ 100 & for long TDs - R White, CJ, TO, Bowe, K Walter

I haven't decided on my #3 WR in either league yet, but Calvin will be in both lineups. He's too much of a homerun threat to sit. Last week he had 90+ yds catching passes from 2 QBs who haven't played all year, one of whom wasn't even on the team a week earlier.

I don't see how you can sit him unless your WRs are just ridiculously good. I don't think mine are "bad" in either league (better than average anyway), and I'm not even considering it. :goodposting:

Calvin is the 5th ranked WR in most ppr leagues out there. He is currently ranked 5th overall in receiving yards, and tied for 2nd with 6 TD's. Detroit has had problems all year and CJ has done just fine. The only way he doesn't make my lineup is having another top 5 WR on my roster to replace him with, or injury. Seriously, every week we see threads like this and every week he finds a way to put up points. Once he starts to decline, then you can bring threads like this back up. Until then, enjoy the fact that he he getting it done.
