I saw the footage tonight of the scene at the Convention Center. It was some of the saddest footage I have ever scene of something that has happened in this country. I have the same feeling in my gut that I had during 9/11. This is absolutely horrible, and those people need to be helped as soon as possible.

The Real News

The following is the result of an interview I just conducted via cell phone with a New Orleans citizen stranded at the Convention Center. I don't know what kind of garbage you're hearing in the mainstream media or in the press conferences from the city and state officials, but here is the truth:

"Bigfoot" is a bar manager and DJ on Bourbon Street, and is a local personality and icon in the city. He is a lifelong resident of the city, born and raised. He rode out the storm itself in the Iberville Projects because he knew he would be above any flood waters. Here is his story as told to me moments ago. I took notes while he talked and then I asked some questions:

Three days ago, police and national guard troops told citizens to head toward the Crescent City Connection Bridge to await transportation out of the area. The citizens trekked over to the Convention Center and waited for the buses which they were told would take them to Houston or Alabama or somewhere else, out of this area.

It's been 3 days, and the buses have yet to appear.

Although obviously he has no exact count, he estimates more than 10,000 people are packed into and around and outside the convention center still waiting for the buses. They had no food, no water, and no medicine for the last three days, until today, when the National Guard drove over the bridge above them, and tossed out supplies over the side crashing down to the ground below. Much of the supplies were destroyed from the drop. Many people tried to catch the supplies to protect them before they hit the ground. Some offered to walk all the way around up the bridge and bring the supplies down, but any attempt to approach the police or national guard resulted in weapons being aimed at them.

There are many infants and elderly people among them, as well as many people who were injured jumping out of windows to escape flood water and the like -- all of them in dire straights.

Any attempt to flag down police results in being told to get away at gunpoint. Hour after hour they watch buses pass by filled with people from other areas. Tensions are very high, and there has been at least one murder and several fights. 8 or 9 dead people have been stored in a freezer in the area, and 2 of these dead people are kids.

The people are so desperate that they're doing anything they can think of to impress the authorities enough to bring some buses. These things include standing in single file lines with the eldery in front, women and children next; sweeping up the area and cleaning the windows and anything else that would show the people are not barbarians.

The buses never stop.

Before the supplies were pitched off the bridge today, people had to break into buildings in the area to try to find food and water for their families. There was not enough. This spurred many families to break into cars to try to escape the city. There was no police response to the auto thefts until the mob reached the rich area -- Saulet Condos -- once they tried to get cars from there... well then the whole swat teams began showing up with rifles pointed. Snipers got on the roof and told people to get back.

He reports that the conditions are horrendous. Heat, mosquitoes and utter misery. The smell, he says, is "horrific."

He says it's the slowest mandatory evacuation ever, and he wants to know why they were told to go to the Convention Center area in the first place; furthermore, he reports that many of them with cell phones have contacts willing to come rescue them, but people are not being allowed through to pick them up.

Buses are being turned away from the Astrodome. While the field level is full, every single seat in the stadium is empty (which CNN continues to show ad nauseum). Fire Marshall says capacity has been reached. Buses are being diverted to other shelters.
Hi Stat,What are they saying about the fire marshall? Obviously, the building was designed to hold 50+ thousand for a game. (or whatever it held - I've been there a few times it's a BIG building)

What has changed? Does the fact they're sleeping there make it different than being there for a game or something?

J
The guy from CNN was interviewing a police officer and he was the one that relayed the information from the fire marshall. The footage I saw showed the floor of the Astrodome full of cots. I imagine that they wanted to limit people to the number that could have their own cot and sleep on the floor. Can you imagine living for months in a stadium seat?

That, if true, is absolutely inexcusable.

I hear you KT. It'd be uncomfortable but not illegal with the fire marshall. A seat in the dome wtih running water and a shower and food is way better than what the guy came from. It might still suck but it'd be an upgrade. There must be somethign more to why the fire marshall is turning them away.J

UNBELIEVABLE.

If they are prepared and have other shelters available, I think it would be better for everybody if they were spread out and had a bit of breathing room. These folks have been through a lot, and I think it is important to make them as comfortable as possible.

The Interdictor Blog is a facinating read, incredible in fact. They've also posted literally hundreds of photos, an historical record of the event. Eerie that the first post Saturday was:"11:05p Hmm. This could actually be a nasty storm. "

Yet you are the among the same who advocated in another thread the idea that it is just simply a matter of dropping supplies into the city out of c130s. These supplies were coming from 20-30 feet and were not effective but it should be a simple matter to fly a large plane lower in order to effectively deliver supplies. That my rose colored glasses friend is UNBELIEVABLE.

I still advocate dropping the supplies. Are you following the news at all? They are finally bringing food and water in by helicopter, and the footage I saw tonight indicated that there was no rioting or violence - quite the opposite actually. People lined up rather orderly in most instances to unload the helicopter. What is your idea? Wait until next week when hopefully the city is stabalized? Do you know how many people will die of dehydration?

This really isn't the thread to argue.

Not at all. I fully advocate bringing in supplies quickly and safely to the people who need it. The fact that it is only now, 4 days later, that it is being done does not mean that it could have been done sooner and is cause for the rhetoric that has been part of the last days posts. Just dropping stuff on peoples heads obviously does not do a whole lot of good. The organized placement of those supplies is much more effective solution, even if it takes a little bit longer. You may say I am callous for feeling time is worth more than lives, but simply dumping stuff overboard to sink in 20 feet of water or smash on the ground is not help, though it appears to be a good effort.

Well two things of semi-note.For one my wife's school is taking in students from the NOLA area free of charge. They are also finding decent homes for the people. Other schools in the area are taking on students also.I was a victim of racial profiling myself this morning. (ok, victim is harsh) I got stopped by a camera crew at a park-n-ride this morning. I am SURE they were looking for a WASPy guy driving a nice car and dressed decent. I answered some of their questions, but I'm sure it wasn't what they wanted for their story.Went along the lines of:"So are the high gas prices driving you to mass transit""No, not really I hate Friday traffic and my company picks me up at the train station anyway so it's not a big timesuck"Basically they kicked a rock at that point and let me go after some other softball about the hurricane.

Can someone please tell me who/what this team SOTI and the interdictor are? It's a great blog but I can't figure out who they are. Thanks.

Here's some of the good things I've read this morning:

8:16 A.M. - National Guard spokesman: We're here to save Louisiana and restore order to the lives of the civilians. 8:16 A.M. - National Guard spokesman: The majority of the citizens have responded in an exemplary manner. 8:16 A.M. - National Guard spokesman: This is a massive airlift here. The calvary has arrived and will continue arriving. 8:13 A.M. - National Guard spokesman: We have several hundred police officers on the way. 8:13 A.M. - National Guard spokesman: We now have the resources we need to get this situation under control. 7:01 A.M. - Jeff Parish Emergency Operations Center Director Walter Maestri: 17th Street Canal Levee breach is now under control...not fixed...but under control. 6:59 A.M. - Jeff Parish Emergency Operations Center Director Walter Maestri: Civil unrest is basically under control in Orleans and Jefferson.

I assumed it was the utilities like plumbing that could be an issue? While they have plumbing facilities for 50+ thousand and showers for 2 teams during a game of 4-5 hours, Im not sure they could sustain that for a month straight.

Oh, and I just spoke to CRDRJoe - he's going into New Orleans tomorrow w/the Coast Guard. He said it's going to be really scary.....so please pray for him.
Next time you talk to him, tell him my thoughts and prayers are with him, as they are with you, tipsy, and everyone else who are in the midst of this terrible tragedy.

Here's an email I got from one of my old roomates in college:

Hello everyone,I am in baton rouge with my family, all except my mom who is a nurse at methodist in NO east. She told us yesterday that they were starting to medivac them out and hoped to be out some time today. the entire first floor was flooded and they are basically out of food and water for them and there patients. The only way that they are getting any food or water is because the nopd and firemen are raiding stores that have any supplies left and bringing them to the hospital. But she is okay and hoping to get out today

heh, WWLTV reported a 18 yo who found an unused bus, and drove it out of NO. On the way he picked up 50 or so people walking out... drove to Houston.kinda rad.

I am a Doctor who evacuated from Children's Hospital on 8/31/05. There are Doctors, Nurses and many, many health care workers who are trapped at Charity Hospital, University Hospital and the VA. There is extremely limited power, water, food. Breakfast at Charity was grahm crackers. There is no sanitation. They are transporting patients 12 floors to be rescued. We need help. There are criminals all over the city, looting, shooting and raping. Rescue efforts are slowed due to limited security. New Orleans is a Third World Country. Why can we send millions in aid to every other country and not be able to mobilize to save Americans. Every person in Hollywood gave relief to sunami victims. What about New Orleana. Please make everyone you know aware of the desperate, dangerous situation. If you know anyone in the media make them aware. Where is FEMA to save the health care workers who will continue to work to save people long after this disaster is over. My boyfriend is trapped at Charity

I would tend to be leary about circulated emails from "first person perspectives". More often than not, these things tend to be faked.Edit: Obviously the one from your roomate is a different story. I'm talking about the thousand times forwarded emails that are already starting to arrive in my inbox.

Emails have saved peoples lives over the past 4 days. I understand your skepticism, but I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree here.

Direct emails to people they know or to rescue organizations, true. Random stories from victims aren't ssaving anyone's lives. The same thing happened after 911 and the Tsunamis.

Random question - I heard that some stadiums can only be used for a few nights if that. Are they being moved out for baseball games? I sure hope not.

Latest update from the inderdictor:

10:01 am

The City is ON FIRE

Teams Alpha and Bravo finished the medium range recon and there are 3 separate locations on fire. We have pictures coming shortly.

During the recon, I spoke to some Federal Marshalls and NOPD. Morale is LOW. Very low. They're not seeing the military presence they say they were promised. I told those guys they can't possibly imagine how much we (the world) appreciate their dedication. I asked what civil rights the citizens have and the US Marshalls looked at me like I just fell off the turnip truck and chuckled. I asked if citizens can have guns for protection and he said if someone thinks he needs a gun, he should have already evacuated. He also said they are setting the city on fire.

The NOPD wants to know where "the two active duty brigades" were that he says they were told were supposed to arrive today. When I asked him what he would want to tell the world, he said Everyone keeps talking about the military presence in the city, and then asked me," Do you see any military around here" in dusgust.

We reconned our roof also, to get a better view of the city and took... I hesitate to call them "amazing" pictures. My city... it has been punched in the face and is on the canvas being counted out.

And yes, that's smoke you see out of the windows. The city is under a haze from the fires. Smoke and ash are floating miles away from the fires.

I just don't understand why they didn't commandeer school buses and Grey Hound buses on Monday after the hurricane went through, when the ground was still relatively dry, and immediately evacuate these people out of there. You can't tell me that the powers at be in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama didn't know that there might be a major disaster. Why weren't they ready for the worse case scenario? Why weren't they sitting there on the outskirts with food and water to go in right on the tails of the hurricane?

I know the governor of Louisiana is upset. Why didn't she plan for this?

So many babies dying. It's killing me.

NO is a port. Why can't a cruise ship be used to evacuate people? If it can't dock they sould use their tenders to ferry people out. Plenty of food and water on board too. I know the Navy and Coast Guard have ships on the way. I also realize that the Marine Carrier and hospital ship on their way are the best classes of ships to help. But we have Navy and Coast Guard ships all over the Gulf and Carribean. Some could have reached NO in hours. Seeing a presence in the river might help people realize that they aren't forgoten. Last time I was in NO there were two Navy cargo ships stationed there of a kind used to transort supplies right up to a beach if necessaru. Where are they? Any Navy types out there that could shed some light on this?Once that Marine Carrier gets there it will make a HUGE difference, with its landing craft and helicopters, but even a small presence of small ships would be a sign of help to come.

I thought they said that there were ships out there with supplies? The cruise ship idea is a good one. They could house plenty of people and have food and water for them. These could have been ready and waiting and ride in on the tails of the hurricane.

Where would these cruise ships be coming from? There's only a limited amount of these behemoths and they're off, well, on cruises. Call my a cynic but there's no way Carnival or any of the other cruiselines throw their businesses out of the water for this. There might be one or two that send a ship (doubtful) but no way in hell they would do it before anything happened "on the tail of the hurricane".

Great interview with State Senator Walter Bosso (sp?) from LA on the WWL link. Very clear and distinct plan of operations. He seemed like a person I would follow during the crisis. The negatives of the local government have been documented quite a bit in these threads, but I just wanted to point out that this disaster is really bringing out the best in some of the politicians in the area.Great job Mr. Senator.

I guess. Hindsight and all that. It doesn't mean that someone couldn't have had someone/something in the water and on land ready to come in the second the hurrican was out of the area. They knew it was going to be catastrophic so I don't see any reason why this couldn't have been done or even considered. When you think about the people expecting to be bused out and shelters ready, that shows that we as a country have dealt with this before and the people had a right to assume that they would be taken care of.

There SHOULD have been food and water ready.

There SHOULD have been shelters ready.

There SHOULD have been transportation ready.

Considering the damage at the mouth of the Mississippi, I have alot of doubts in the navigability of that part of the river right now anyways. Maybe some Navy ships would try it, but very unlikely any huge cruise ship would try.

Convoy en route to the convention center right now....just showed ariel video of the convoy on CNN
 Saw it too. This is great news. Although, they're way overdue. I hate to pile on the goverment and how this has been handled but this type of chaos should've never happened to a U.S. city. Something went dreadfully wrong. It's so sad. I still can't believe it and I've been watching it for days. Something major has to change after this disaster. This is America for crying out loud. :( I am extremely happy the convoy has arrrived, however. Let's take back this city and get our U.S. citizens the help they need and deserve.

Great news that there's a strong military presence in NOLA right now. Teams of military personnel should be going from rooftop to rooftop ASAP and cutting holes in every roof, IMO. Anyone still trapped alive in an attic has almost no time left. Already it's looking grim for them. They would've had to have some water with them, and the fortitude to stand in neck-high toxic soup for days.Any chance anyone is still alive in that situation?

12:16 P.M. - (AP): State officials said Friday they have spotted a huge oil spill near two storage tanks at the town of Venice, on the Mississippi River downstream from New Orleans.A flyover by the Department of Environmental Quality revealed what was described as a major oil spill."Two tanks with the capacity of holding 2 million barrels appear to be leaking," the statement said.No further details were given.
From hereMore problems to overcome for the Gulf Region.

12:45 P.M. - (AP): Evacuations resumed today at some of New Orleans' most troubled hospitals where desperate doctors were being forced to make tough choices about which patients got dwindling supplies of food, water and medicines.Rescuers finally made it into Charity Hospital, the largest public hospital and trauma center in the city, where gunshots prevented efforts yesterday to evacuate more than 220 patients.Richard Zuschlag, president of Acadian Ambulance Service president, says the military is handling the evacuation of Charity and other nearby hospitals.Relatives of Doctor L. Lee Hamm, chairman of medicine at Tulane University, also reported that they received a text message from him around midday today. He confirmed that evacuations were taking place at Charity and nearby University Hospital, where more than one-thousand patients, family members, staff and people from the community had huddled.
From the same link as above....finally starting to move people out.
