KC QB Cassel Misses Practice (1 Viewer)

What is Croyle's value vs SD? What about if he plays vs STL? I haven't watched him play much the last couple of years. Is he awful or serviceable?

Trying not to be a KC apologist, but there are some things to consider with Croyle.

- 8 of his 9 career starts were in the Herman Edwards regime with a horrible team that went 4-12 and then 2-14, and then promptly fired Edwards and GM Carl Peterson.

- All 9 of his starts were in a different system prior to the arrival of Charlie Weis.

- The one start he made with Haley running the show was Todd's first game in KC due to a Cassel injury. Week 1 2009 @ Baltimore and he was competent. 16/24 for 177 with 2 TDs and no picks.

- At no point in his career has he had a running game or offensive line like he does now.

I am by no means saying that the KC offense is going to keep doing what it has been, or that Brodie is going to light the world on fire, but I doubt he is as bad as he was pre-Haley & pre-Weis.

NFL Net interviewed doc yesterday who indicated that he would advise Cassel to play without limitations after appendectomy.... As long as he has no ill effects from this procedure... Apparently the risk is more on opening the external would vs anything internal.

Based on what I heard from the interview, I would expect Cassel to play

I guarantee that Bowe will do better with Croyle then he did last week with Cassel.
Trying to turn down the snark, but you do know that Bowe was facing Champ Bailey, right? Since Bowe was shut down, a single yard would be better, so thanks for paying attention and going out on a limb.

Wasn't Bowe also facing Champ Bailey on November 14th when he caught 13 passes for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns?

In a game that was 35-0 in the mid 2nd quarter, I'm pretty sure that it affected coverage. Cassel had 470 yds passing, the Chiefs had a total of 22 carries, so it was all garbage time for Bowe/Cassel.

Appendectomy via laproscopic surgery per Schefter.
That's thru the navel, right?
That's the largest incision yes. However, there are at least two other ones used for a camera and a grasping/dissection tool. The worst part of the surgery to recover from is the pain in your abdomen. Your gut is inflated with C02 in order to give the surgeon room to work.

Basically feels like the worst ab workout routine x 10. Doubt he'll play this week though. GDB having to roll with Brodie.
I experienced nothing of the sort the days after the surgery and would have done a time trial (bike) 6 days after release if it hadn't of been for the internal infection that developed. I suspect these players are more sore after the average game they they would be from this procedure.

NTTAWWTCassel's external wood

BUt fwiw 'opening a post surgery suture' is a pretty serious 'risk' that might cause more problems down the road. I can't imagine they play Cassell this week. WAY too soon after a fairly invasive surgery

"Matt Cassel didn't practice again today. It's looking like Brodie Croyle might start, but nothing has been confirmed."
"it's looking' = we think.

The chiefs have already played the chargesrs once this year. I imagine that helps with the game prep. I think Cassell won't play too, but because I think that doesn't mean 'it's looking like that'. Cassel could run this Offense with no practice time as he is already in a comfort zone with many of the guys (especially moeaki, charles and bowe)

Does this upgrade Charles or is this a Titans situation where the entire offense sinks?
I would expect Charles to remain the same. Croyle > Rusty Smith.Remember that the San Diego defense is pretty good. I could see Charles struggling to get 100 total yards and maybe a touchdown no matter who is at QB.

Please post any updates you hear about Cassel's availability against the Rams this week.

It's not so much Cassel I care about. I have Moeaki. No way I'm starting him with Croyle under center.

Local media is reporting him as day to day. Expected to know more tomorrow after practice. He has said if there's any way he can play that he intends to.

From Arrowhead Pride:

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel was on the field in pads warming up with others, according to Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star. That's the first step in Cassel's road to recovery after undergoing an appendectomy last week.

We don't know the extent of his practice and how he felt but 810 WHB reported that he wasn't doing all the stretches at practice which suggests there's still some soreness there. Cassel will be speaking with the media Wednesday afternoon but I wouldn't expect many updates from him.

(Update: The KC Star has a detailed run down of Cassel's practice at their blog.)

The Chiefs will issue their practice report this afternoon (around 3:00 p.m.) and declare his practice status as did not practice, limited in practice or a full participant in practice.

So what's next?

Doing the same thing on Thursday and Friday at practice. By Friday, the Chiefs will announce whether he is out, doubtful, questionable, or probable for the St. Louis Rams game.

We can't necessarily expect to learn a whole lot by his practice habits as only part of practice is open to the media but his presence leaves the door open for him to play on Sunday.

Curious what the line is on the game this weekend? So is Vegas, who is waiting to hear the status of Cassel.

and from the Star:

Cassel participating in practice

Matt Cassel was suited up and participating in today's practice, the first of the week for the Chiefs as they get ready for Sunday's game against the Rams in St. Louis.

During the brief portion of practice open to the media, Cassel was running with his teammates (though he lagged behind the other quarterbacks). He stretched and then was first in line, a position reserved for the starter, when the quarterbacks started throwing.

He was handing off to running backs while Brodie Croyle and Tyler Palko started position drills by throwing to the wide receivers. Cassel later was in the huddle and did some throwing during a drill in which all three quarterbacks, each with a ball in hand, throws to a receiver down the field.

Cassel threw three deep passes but only one with a strong zip. He showed good accuracy, there was no defense in place.

My guess on his availablilty Sunday? There's clearly a chance he will play against the Rams. Otherwise, the Chiefs wouldn't have allowed him to be practicing. But it also appears the Chiefs aren't counting on him being ready.

This is fantastic news if Cassel indeed plays. The Bowe owner had a strong team but has been eliminated so I don't have to face him, and yet I can start Cassel over a WR depleted Eli who only has Nicks left as a threat.

No brainer - starting him over Eli, despite FBG's ranking them 21 and 22. I expect the late rankings will see Cassel climb.

I guess I have to start Collins with full confidence.

Matt Cassel (appendectomy) is listed as questionable for Week 15 and will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s matchup with St. Louis. The team’s medical staff will “take its evaluation to game day” on whether Cassel will get the start. All signs point to Cassel playing against the Rams, but only as a caretaker at the controls of a decidedly run-first attack. Cassel’s return is enough to upgrade Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles’ outlooks for Week 15. It won’t be enough to make Cassel a good option on his own.Source: Josh Looney on Twitter

FF aside Cassel would be crazy to play. One good shot to area he had his appendix removed from and he could start internal bleeding.

This is not like someone returning to a desk job.

I am not trying to downplay an appendectomy but normally it is done with a tiny incision that should be healed by now. There is not a chance of internal bleeding.
