Kerry Rhodes (1 Viewer)

I am a Kerry Rhodes owner, as I was last year. I play him every week, because of what he is capable of doing on the field. However... He isn't very consistent, IMO. He'll blow up certain weeks, then lay goose eggs other weeks. It's frustrating, but I can never bring myself to benching him. This week... ZERO tackles so far against Indy. This is the way it is with this guy. The guy riding the pine for me this week? Chris Hope. Time to change things up next week. I'll go for consistency rather than up-and-down weeks for now on.

Where were you when I asked the board whether or not he was the real deal? To me, inconsistency means that you are not the real deal. Players you are not confident in starting have little value since they only seem to have huge games when they're on the bench. Putting up goose eggs makes it real hard to be the #1 DB as well, as some seemed to think possible. Well, now I've got 0 points in my starting lineup and the player I dropped for him (Justin Miller) has about 10 points at the half (sigh).

Well, you can complain about it and bench him only to be back here next week #####ing about inconsistency or you can break it down and try to figure when his less productive games may be.

What I've seen today:

1. Until the second half (right now) as the Jet DL wears down, the Indy has been solid but not spectacular (so-so interior blocking, so-so RB talent IMO) and there haven't been many running plays into the second level because the interior line is being grossly outplayed by the two ILB and DT this week. Take a look at the boxscore (Vilma 4-4, Barton 7-2). The Colts are getting deep into the first level, but not past the backers as teams had in previous weeks.

2. The Jets are playing a lot of Cover-2 and Cover-3 today against the Colts and more often using Eric Barton to cover Dallas Clark in the slot than Rhodes. Rhodes isn't up at the LOS nearly as often as he's been in recent weeks. The Cover-2 looks are likely in response to the Jets not having David Barrett this week at corner and having to go without a rotation.

Put 1 and 2 together and Rhodes isn't in the same position to make plays. He has, in the last four series I've watched, come up to the line more with the Colt rushing game establishing itself better in the second half and made a play on the outside against Reggie Wayne (tackle) and on the inside (PD against Clark in the slot - close call and not awarded).

Had the Colts had as much success on the ground as the three previous teams have had against the Colts, the boxscores would look entirely different.

Now, if your roster is so solid that you can afford to bench a player who is clearly a big part of the Jet gameplans (in-the-box safety with extra coverage and blitz responsibilities) then fine. He is far and away the best safety in my leagues this season. He had three games I would consider well below average last season and eight above average games. This isn't a Darren Sharper/Ed Reed big play rollercoaster.

Chris Hope, sure, I'm not sure how you bench that guy right now even in start 1 DB leagues.

Justin Miller? If you play Miller over Rhodes next week, it's a classic case of reactionary management.

Late edit: Rhodes looked pretty bad on the play fake TD pass to Fletcher.

When you have Adrian Wilson, you bench Chris Hope, for your information. That's how you bench him.We start 2 DBs. The problem with having 3 good ones is that you try to figure out who to bench each week. I'm actually gonna try to trade Rhodes this week. I should have done it this past week while his value was high.

Fair enough. Always a good problem to have with three top five defensive backs trying to figure out who to start. Shouldn't have too much trouble trading Rhodes.

He's been questionable the last 2 weeks with an ankle. I think you will see good numbers from Rhodes this week against Jax. Much like his mentor, Mangini will change up the defense often on a week to week basis. You may have read the thread on Bellichick running a 5-1-6, and a 5-2-5 defensive scheme. Some games will see Rhodes bltzing 4, 5 even 6 times, and the next week not at all. If you recall the Giants preseason game, the Jets only rushed three, and put everyone else in coverage... Eli had all day, but couldn't find any open recievers.

Those weeks that Rhodes is blitzing and ball hawking as part of the game plan, he'll go off like a madman. The difference is, IMO, that even when he isn't getting those calls, he'll still put up solid numbers every week. This sort of reminds me of some Jets fans calling for DC Sutton's head already. First, it's Mangini's defense not Sutton's, and he will do all he can to try to create mis-matches. Mangini wanted to give the Colts a D look that begged to be run against. Force them out of what they do best. Against Jax, I look for Mangini to attempt to make them throw... but exactly how he'll do that isn't something I can't say with any certainty.

No way would I consider cutting Rhodes. But I think there must be somthing wrong with him to only get 2 solo tackles after the number of times the Jaguars ran the ball today and how much the Jets defense was on the field.

I didn't see the game but the only explaination I can think of is he is hurt or else the game plan was for Rhodes to play center field while the rest of the defense stacked against the run.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is what you get with Rhodes. Now, with 2 horrible games in a row, he'll probably blow up next week. He was riding the pine for me this week, and will probably be a bye-week filler only, at this point.

I am not ready to dump Rhodes just yet. He's got Miami next week and their offense turns the ball over and gives up sacks as much as anyone. If he's invisible again against the Dolphins, I am definately dumping him though.

Good news and bad news for Rhodes watchers.

Bergen Record

Kerry Rhodes often starts creeping up toward the line of scrimmage from his strong safety spot as the opposing quarterback barks his signals.

Soon, there will be voices coming from the opponent's sideline as well, yelling, "Watch 25! Watch 25!"

Rhodes quickly has gotten used to the extra attention, which became very noticeable after he had two strip sacks against Buffalo on Sept. 24.

"It's actually kind of flattering," Rhodes said Friday. "Whenever I move, they're checking away from me. I'm getting a little respect. [And] if they're checking away from me, there are plays for my teammates to make."

Rhodes hasn't been blitzing as frequently the past two games as he did in the previous two, and that trend might continue Sunday when the Jets (2-3) host Miami (1-4) at Giants Stadium.

Rhodes leads the Jets in sacks. They simply havent been able to get enough pressure on the opposing QB. I'm going to start Rhodes one more time before benching him. Harrington is one of those QB's that can play well if not under pressure. If Mangini doesn't do something about that, then I will lower my expectations for Rhodes AND Mangini considerably. The direction that both Rhodes and the Jets go this week will be the best indication of what sort of season both will have IMO.

Rhodes got me 17.5 this week.... glad I rode the slump out. Anyone get either rewarded by being patient, or burned by being impatient?

Love the INT, but no tackles with only 10 minutes left in the game?

Did he get hurt earlier in the game or is he just hawking the ball? If anyone's watching, I'd love to hear what's going on in this game.

Thanks and cheers!

He was very active and around the ball and the play all day. I saw several plays that he should have been credited with assists. Almost had a second pick... but didn't get any blitz calls that I saw during live play. It is starting to seem like teams are trying to run and throw away from him now.
