Kevin Smith lotto ticket (1 Viewer)

Kevin smith has disappeared like kaiser Zose at the end of the usual suspects movie. Not a lot of info as to why k. Smith was demoted to number 3 RB so quickly. There were a couple of leshoure versus k smith threads over the past few weeks. Looks like leshoure won the contest

If j. best is cleared for contact tomorrow do people think k. Smith gets cut, traded or just rides the pine for the rest of the season? Seems like there would be several teams who could use his services immediately.

I would be shocked to see the Lions cut/trade a RB. They have Best is a medium hit away from retirement. That would leave them with a guy that has only played a couple of career games.

Well Detroit can't activate 4 RBs on game day, especially when 3 of them don't play Special Teams. They'd have to deactivate either Smith or Joique Bell. If Smith is truly behind Bell, you'd think they'd do the honorable thing & release or trade him, being a veteran & team-first guy.

he was unsigned last year and no one picked him up. maybe a short term arizona situation but not much. if you want to go that route, you are better off going with hightower

I don't think they would ever cut him for one good reason - The Pack would probably sign him. He would be a good fit on the Packers

The K.Smith hate in unfounded. He looked good before getting shafted and IMO should be playing somewhere for someone this year.

I agree. Busted his ### for the Lions and now hardly sees a snap. I guess we'll just keep handing it to Leshoure on the shotgun draw. It's going to be interesting to see if the Lions change anything up on offense this week. We don't have very good luck in Philly....I see a ### kicking coming. I don't think the Lions will cut or trade Kevin Smith, they have too many issues at RB. Wouldn't doubt seeing Kevin Smith back in there later in the year. I cut him in my redraft after watching him for a couple weeks not even crack a sweat.

Is that what they call that? The only reason he has had a job the past few years is because his replacements have been injured, he knows the system and he is cheap (700k 1 year deal).

What is so hard to understand that he is good enough to make the team, but that bigger backs that can break tackles are ahead of him on the depth chart?

Which bigger backs are breaking tackles? Leshoure leaves more yards on the field than any Detroit back. Bell is the slowest, by far. I'd love to see detailed yards after contact stats, but those numbers would be unavoidably subjective. The fact remains that since his return from injury Smith has preformed at a high level and shown more versatility, lateral agility, vision and burst than any back on that roster. The only way this will change is a return to health by Best or them signing another RB to add to the mix.

Rightly or wrongly, it looks like the Lions (and the rest of the NFL) have made up their minds on KSmith. The Lions will likely continue to control him because they can and I doubt anyone else will make an offer they can't refuse. He's in purgatory.

Count me in as agreeing with the smith hate being unfounded. Bottom line is he wa just not a selection of the current coaching regime in Detroit. He was a leftover from before Schwartz took over. Schwartz drafted best, leshoure and added bell. Just going by han psychology you had to think that he was going to favor those guys over smith even if it doesn't make sense, BC if they succeed he looks and feels smarter. It's an ego thing. Kevin smith has the ability to be a feature back on an nfl team. And a damn good one at that. He is no more injury prone than most backs in the nfl. RBS get injured constantly. The most durable rb I can think of is CJ 2.6ypc and that's only BC he shies away from contact and goes down upon bein touched. Any rb that actually fights for yardage gets nicked up or seriously injured.

I don't think he is the greatest RB but honestly the stats in this case are very misleading. The Lions were one of the worst teams in the NFL during several of those years. Even the most talented WR in the game doesn't have dominate stats in most of those seasons. He has busted his rear for the Lions and so far. I don't see where the other guys are so much better than him that he should be left without any role whatsoever.

Count me in as well.. I really don't get it. as a Packers fan, I would like to see him acquired and given a shot to replace Benson. I drafted KSMITH, and have since dropped him, but would gladly pick him up if he had a shot at another team.

Kevin smith has disappeared like kaiser Zose at the end of the usual suspects movie.
Isn't it Keyser Soze? Also, why did you capitalize Zose but keep kaiser in lower case? When you watched the movie, did you assume kaiser was a formal title like "emperor" or "ruler"? I can kind of see that. That being said, just drop Kevin Smith and move on guys.

he kinda is i guess. but schwartz did actually select him in a way. he was cut and then the current staff decided to pick him up. schwartz even said he picked him up bc he looked so great in a workout. it is really quite weird he was cast aside. i do think if best is healthy then smith has no role. its just weird he wasnt working in with leshoure as smith has shown capable of making some plays.

Lol..Me watch football. Me think big strong back is best fit for all team.Leshoure is a plodder. The team looks out of sync with him plodding behind that OL. If anything Bell should be the #1 RB on that team right now if not Smith.

How do you reconcile this with the fact that he was unsigned last year? Lions picked him up again for peanuts after everyone else had an opportunity to take him. What team in the NFL wouldn't kill to have a feature back for $700k a year?

I agree that Leshoure is not fleet of foot, but he is faster than Bell. If Leshoure is a plodder, Bell is dead.

Do you know which teams looked at him, worked him out or wanted to? Rhetorical questions aside, Smith has performed better than quite a few starting RB's in the NFL since his return.

I don't think we're talking about a Lotto ticket here; more like $20 on Black. Smith is a decent RB but nothing special. It seems unlikely he'll be fantasy relevant in Detroit without an injury to Leshoure; this is even more true with the possibility of Best returning. If he gets traded or cut (non-zero chance if Best comes back) he could be a serviceable back somewhere else.

It doesn't matter who actually looked at him. Name any feature back in the league and put him on the FA market for $700k. You wouldn't have to think about what teams looked at him because they all would. In fact all would be willing to sign him on a phone call. Bottom line, Kevin smith is not a feature back.

When I read your name
Anyway, I'm sorry but I think Smith could go to ARI, GB, NYJ, ATL, CIN, IND and be an auto upgrade over their current situations, if only as a compliment. Like I said, the Smith hate is completely unfounded. He looked good before being relegated to the bench. He ran all over STL and did a better job again SF than every single RB aside from AP up until this point. No, he's not the most talented back in the game but he has a very specific skill set and can definitely be a contributor to an RB needy team.

The same way you can reconcile an undeafted free agent like Alfred Morris tearing it up as a top 5 rb in his rookie year? How many nfl scouts looked at Morris and thought "nothing special" before the draft? Believe me if the lions released smith today he would not clear waivers. And he would have success on the team that picks him up...if they were to give him a shot. I'm not saying he is Darren McFadden or Adrian Peterson. But he is an above average rb. I'd take smith over: Any Jets rbAny Arizona rbAny Indy rbAny Green Bay rb (including benson)Any Atlanta rbAny Cincy rbAnd that's just off the top of my mind.

Yep, yep. Close the book. It's not about hate, it's about every single GM in the league ignoring him except the Lions (and that only as a last, dirt-cheap resort after every other back they had got injured) for two straight years. He was a free agent in 2011, nobody wanted him until the Lions got desperate, then they dumped him. He was a free agent in 2012, and until the Lions got desperate, nobody wanted him. And immediately after the Lions get a healthy body they stop playing him. It takes a special kind of love to not see the pattern here. He's a 3rd stringer at best. Every team in the NFL knows this, including the Lions.

i dunno, i happen to believe the line between capable of starting and 3rd stringer is really effin thin. dude is capable of playing and producing, i dont think thats questionable. but mebbe hes not the optimal choice ahead of other guys in coaches and gms minds. ofc, those guys mess up a lot. and he had some extenuating circumstances surrounding his employability in yrs past.

How do you reconcile this with the fact that he was unsigned last year? Lions picked him up again for peanuts after everyone else had an opportunity to take him. What team in the NFL wouldn't kill to have a feature back for $700k a year?
Do you know which teams looked at him, worked him out or wanted to? Rhetorical questions aside, Smith has performed better than quite a few starting RB's in the NFL since his return.
It doesn't matter who actually looked at him. Name any feature back in the league and put him on the FA market for $700k. You wouldn't have to think about what teams looked at him because they all would. In fact all would be willing to sign him on a phone call. Bottom line, Kevin smith is not a feature back.
A simple "no" would've stated your case more clearly.

Well, you are a guy that feels very strongly about Kevin Smith.

Well this is just a bunch of made up nonsense. Just because Smith didn't get signed by another team (and neither you nor I know who was or wasn't interested in him) doesn't mean he's a bad RB (nor does it mean he's a good RB). Look at the numbers, the game tape, and his production to make that determination, don't base it on who signed him/didn't sign him. You're trying to make a correlation where none exists. Does the fact that Victor Cruz was undrafted mean he isn't a quality NFL WR? Because according to your logic, if he was a quality NFL WR prospect, someone would have drafted him late. Therefore, "Bottom line, Victor Cruz is not a NFL-caliber WR." What about Tom Brady? He wasn't drafted until the 6th round. "If he were a franchise QB, you wouldn't have to think about what teams looked at him, because they all would."

Teams make decisions for any number or reasons, and quite often, those decisions turn out wrong. Hindsight is 20/20, but your "logic" here is severely flawed.

Well, for this one I'm going with the theory that 32 NFL teams know better than me. He's a 5 year vet getting pretty much league minimum. I don't need to know who was interested in him. If anyone else was mildly interested he would be making more than $700k. Would I plug him in my team if Leshore went down and I needed a fill in? Sure. But his 5 years of production has been far from spectacular and he doesn't seem to be in high demand. What I wouldn't do is stash him thinking he's a lottery ticket.

HUGE difference between undrafted (or late drafted) rookies and 5 year vets. No one had every seen those guys play in the NFL before they were drafted. The scouting process for college guys is obviously no where near perfect. But like you just said, for Kevin Smith we have tons of tape. NFL GMs have "Looked at the numbers, the game tape, and his production" and made their determinations. They decided he wasn't worth a shot (over and over again). I'm pretty sure if Patriots dropped Brady or or the Giants dropped Cruz, some NFL GM would at least be willing to pay them the vet minimum to sit on the bench. Going out on a limb here I know...In the absolute right situation, he can do reasonably well. The same can be said a thousand guys. I agree with the poster who said the line between the average starter and and the average bench player isn't always that big. But by that definition, every guy rostered in the league is a good lottery ticket. You have to pick your spots.

Smith was dealing with multiple injuries when he was a free agent(hand and knee). That'd scare most gm's away right there, especially when they can find a younger, cheaper guy of their own. I don't understand why you're saying he was ignored by GM's for 2 years, please explain. It looks to me like he was a free agent for only 7 months(from March to November 2011), but maybe I'm missing something.

I don't think he's a good lotto ticket, although they are behaving irrationally with their RB usage I can't see the Detroit management team being stupid enough to drop the only guy that has proven to be their best all around RB.

That is interesting. I'd appreciate a link that states which teams looked at him and decided he wasn't worth a shot. Whenever you have a chance to provide it, thanks.

No that guy is right. Well, sort of. Smith was a free agent in 2012, for about 3 weeks. The NFL "season" begins at the beginning of March (I believe, not sure of exact date). Smith re-signed with Detroit on 3/27/12, BEFORE they knew Leshoure was going to be suspended, and BEFORE they knew Best was going to be on PUP.So, to recap:Smith played on crap teams in Detroit and was average. He had injury issues, so they drafted Best and then Leshoure, as a result, when Smith's contract expired, they didn't re-sign him (2011). Since he wasn't fully healthy, no one else picked him up. Both of the other 2 RBs also had injury issues, during which time, Smith had rehabbed/recovered from his injuries. They re-signed Smith, and he did well (not great, but not sucky, either). He was a FA in the offseason, FOR THREE WEEKS, and decided to re-sign with Detroit, without actively testing the market. This was well BEFORE Detroit "got desperate." After the 1st 2 weeks, Detroit decided he wasn't their guy, and he has not received a touch since. In the 2 subsequent games, no Detroit RB has had a higher YPC than Smith did in the first 2 games, and no Detroit RB has scored more TDs than Smith did in the first 2 games. What does this mean? It means Smith DOES NOT suck as an NFL RB, but it also means that doesn't matter. He will not be a FF factor unless there are is an injury to Leshoure and/or Bell. The Detroit coaches have made their decision, and whether it is the right or wrong one doesn't matter; it is what it is.

You have to pick your spots.
i think the whole "nfl gms knew about him and deemed him unworthy" to be a bit overplayed and inaccurate due to his specific circumstances. he was coming off an acl injury and had looked poor for the lions. with that fresh in their minds, there was no reason to go after him. now, im not sure how many teams did their due diligence on him with private workouts once he got healthy. i do know, and remember, that as soon as he worked out for the lions they instantly signed him and schwartz raved about how great he looked. this may even have been before best was injured and they were hurting for a rb. so in short, coming off an acl injury and playing poorly=not worthy of a roster spot.but, pimping a workout=instantly signed and playing a few weeks later.so i dont think its as cut and dry as many want it to appear.

Well, for this one I'm going with the theory that 32 NFL teams know better than me.
This is almost always a terrible argument and I hate when I see posters fall back on this. NFL coaches and GMs make horrific decisions all of the time, often times in extremely obvious "looks bad on paper" ways. Relying upon the judgment of NFL coaches and GMs for player assessment is just not a good strategy unless you, yourself, have a history of terrible judgment. Don't do that. Think for yourself, come up with your own opinions based on the information that is available to you. Often times, the GMs and coaches don't have much more information than we do and make poor decisions anyways.None of that means that Kevin Smith is going to get his starting job back on the Lions, but you shouldn't write him off because some GMs passed on him. Further, if Bayhawks is correct, he didn't test the free agent market, anyways. Those GMs may not have even had a chance to pass on him.

Phenomenal post. This, gentleman, is what a well thought out and reasoned post looks like.

This post was in response to a guy saying he is feature back material and a good stash as a lotto ticket. Which he is not. I stand by my statement that 32 NFL teams can look at a 5 year vet and determine that. So he is not a lottery ticket. What you can know better than 32 NFL teams is if a guy will have some relevance to your fantasy team like you said. Which is completely different than stashing this guy as a lottery ticket hoping he becomes a feature back. Like I said above I absolutely would plug this guy in given injuries to Leshore and Best. But when those guys are healthy Smith is back off my team.

I guess it depends on whether you are talking about long-term, or just this year. For this year, he ABSOLUTELY is a "lottery ticket" type guy. With the hush-hush nature surrounding Best's test results, I don't feel too good about him being cleared. I could be wrong, but that's my gut feeling. So, the only way he's gonna have value is if something happens to Leshoure (injury/suspension). IF that were to happen, he could be a borderline RB1. But, what is more likely to happen is that he won't have a FF impact at all this year, just as most lottery tickets don't win anything.
