I was debating trading rice for smith. I'm torn, but macgahee comes back at some pt.
I actually just read tonight (after I started this thread) that McGahee is expected to start week 1. So it looks like Smith might be the guy to have.
Where did you read that? Here's what HC Harbaugh had to say after McGahee practiced today:

"I wouldn’t say he’s 100 percent just [from] watching him run around out there," Harbaugh said of McGahee. "But he was out there. We’ll just have to see how he progresses this week. He wants to be out there, I know that.”
(TheHuddle) The Baltimore Sun reports Baltimore Ravens RB Willis McGahee (knee) practiced Monday, Sept. 1, and he is expected to start Week 1. Head coach John Harbaugh said McGahee's knee is still not at 100 percentAnalysis: As is usually the case, stars are 'banged up' in preseason, but have no problem starting opening day...imagine that. Many owners have gambled that they'll have an immediate star by drafting Ray Rice due to McGehee's bum knee. Bottom line, they'll likely lose that gamble, at least short term.
I really don't accept the premise of this post. It would be true if a few other circumstances added up; namely, if:
a) McGahee had previously demonstrated a command of the playbook
b) McGahee were leaps and bounds better than the backup
c) McGahee were the guy had been drafted/recruited by current Gm/HC/OC and therefore was known by them and they were tied to him.
ight be a bit of a leap on their part.
