Kevin Smith (1 Viewer)

I'll put in a claim for him just because of the potential upside, but Kevin Smith will most likely be in a long line of players who blew up against the Panthers this season who aren't that great.

Why did the Lions cut Kevin Smith? When they cut him and Best went down, why did they take so long to re-sign a guy with this kind of talent who already knows the Lions offense?
Smith tore his ACL in December 2009 and then struggled to recover (there were reports that his knee was so bad that it could never get back to 100%). His contract was up last February so it seemed like the more prudent choice was to just keep Maurice Morris (who still had a year left on his contract) and draft a healthy Mikel Leshoure.Still....it makes no sense that they didn't give Smith a call when Best first went down OR when Jerome Harrison was put on IR.

went with my hunch and Carolina's bad d and played smith over Blount and beanie this weekend. Thanks to waldman for pushing me over the edge on picking him up. 43+ points today fantastic!

Smith is the piece that the Lions were looking for. Outside of maybe Tulloch, the most important pickup of the year. The Lions spent a lot of effort trying to fix their running game. First drafting LeShoure. Then picking up Harrison. Then Davis. Now Smith appears right from in front of their nose and looks like the key to Detroit's running game woes which they were searching high and low for. If Smith is for real, Detroit is about to become an elite offense to go along with their solid defense. This may make the Lions second to only the Packers as the best team in football. They need to work on eliminating stupid penalties though.

Shoot--told someone else to pick him up in their league last week and then didn't get him for myself. Shoulda woulda coulda--way too late now.

Easyyyyy big boy. Easyyyyy. They have one of the worst rush defenses in the game. Are the Lions a playoff team? Probably.

Second best team in football? Try third best in their own division.

Detroit with a real running game leapfrogs da Bears, IMO. We will learn more on Thursday. The only stretch was putting them over SF.

I agree. I own (and started) both Stafford and Kevin Smith today. I like what I saw, but their defense hasn't been play well enough to be in the conversation with the best teams in the NFL. GB, SF, CHI, and NYG are ahead of them, IMO.

May want to see him against a defense better than the Panthers before you call Smith the missing piece. The Panthers made Chris Johnson look like his old self last week.

It's certainly a great matchup, but I don't see any one in that line aside from Chris Johnson (who could still feasibly bounce back from this Atlanta game). Looking at the game logs it's mostly been studs gashing them or solid players having decent days. I think the more important matchup factor here is that Detroit's a bad matchup for any team. If Smith just puts up a third of his output from this game (60 yds 1 TD) he's a pretty solid flex. He can do that and more.

As someone who has watched every snap of every Carolina game this season, I can tell you that the numbers may be lying a bit on that. It doesn't matter who the back is, as long as they have at least marginal skills, they are able to run on Carolina with relative ease.

Pretty much. The SB is just a formality this year.

LOL...CJ needed 27 carries last week. And as evident today he's just a scrub now. He can't make anyone miss. Why are people ignoring my post:

The truth is probably somewhere in between. Clearly Smith is unlikely to duplicate today's performance for the rest of his career, let alone this season. And part of that needs to be placed on the matchup. There is a reason Carolina leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns allowed. Still, I don't think it's logical to think that Smith's production was completely due to Carolina, either. Typically, a team that can pass as well as the Lions can get 7 in the box with regularity. If that can happen with regularity, Smith should be able to have some success most weeks. Not 200+ yards and 3 TDs, but not 40 yards and 0 TDs, either. Depending on how he physically holds up and the questions surrounding Best, I would think 80-90 combined yards and a good chance at a TD most weeks is something Smith could possibly manage in the final six games of the season.

Seriously?! :lmao: Sure, if GB gets there they will be the biggest favorites in a few years, but no way any of those other teams are decisively better than PIT, NE, or BAL. SF still plays both PIT and BAL, so if they go 2-0 there I'll give you them as #2 overall but def not DET, CHI, or NYG.

This is the crux of the issue here. The Titans have a different and less potent offense than the Titans do so you would expect there to be more room for Smith over CJ. Nate Washington and Damien Williams aren't going to get the respect of the safies that Calvin would. That being said, you have to look at CJ's performance as suspect in coparison to a player who came in off the street a couple of weeks ago. Smith has the desire, CJ has all but checked out. And yes, putting CJ in my lineup today in lieu of Smith cost me a win.I feel bad for the Titans fans. Having to watch the way he performed in a must win situation had to have been frustrating. Kudos to Smith for putting it all out there. Hope he keeps it up and shows the Lions brass they made a big mistake by cutting a guy with so much heart, pride and desire. Smith is the kind of player who deserves to be on the field.

It's certainly possible that this week could be a fluke since we just saw Chris Johnson come back to reality this week after blowing up against Carolina in week 10. However, Kevin Smith is more hungry than Chris Johnson. The Lions have Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Teams cannot stack the box like they do vs the Titans. Great playoff schedule and the Lions are fighting for the playoffs. There's more reason to believe that Kevin Smith's performance today was not a fluke. The Lions today look like a completely different team with a legit running game. They looked like the same explosive offense before they lost Best. What a turn around.

The guy put up 35 points. I don't care who the opponent is, that's impressive. Not to mention, the fact that he was and will be the lead back in a high powered offense going forward makes him fairly valuable.

Im a little happy to have both DeMarco and Young Kev in my backfield these days

Tittylated to see how Smith looks the next few weeks. Might be the difference between me making the playoffs and not.

Nice.

Funny on many levels....little too graphic a picture, but this made me laugh.

As one forced into the position to pick Smith up based on byes and injuries and actually start him this week....here's to much more tittylation to come.

I agree. I took a flier on him in one league out of desperation. He could be huge going forward!

Smith isn't gonna average 8.8 YPC every game, but he can very well be at 5.0 for the rest of the season in this offense. If he can average 15 carries a game with 3-4 receptions, that's RB2 value right there. MoMo and Keiland will probably get mixed in, but there's no doubt who the feature back needs to be.

Picked him up in two leagues, started in one and on the bench in the other. With the Bills struggling to move the ball i can see Smith taking Fjax's spot in my lineup pending matchups expecially this week going against the Jets.

from Sportsline

According to the blurb, Smith had 43 snaps, Morris had 14.

Starting with his long initial run, Smith had 39 snaps to 6 for Morris.

Not like any of us need more convincing after 201 yards and 3 TDs, but it's yet another reason to be enthusiastic about Smith for the remainder of the season.

Maybe the most impressive part of his day is the fact that he was in sufficiently good shape to handle this load after being signed less than two weeks ago. Smith said he was working out from 7 am to noon every day. It looks like that was legitimate.

The only thing that has me worried now, as a Best owner, who was hoping he'd be back for the fantasy playoffs, and who picked up Smith...is, K. Smith playing well the next couple of weeks, Best coming back, and then not knowing who to play just in time for the fantasy playoffs.

Picked him up in 2, started him in both and he was the difference in both ... but that says a more about how bad my RB situation and insight from you guys who touted him than anything else. From here, with Stafford, Calvin and that offense, I think Smith is a solid #2 - but I don't think he is any better than he was before the injuries and I think he is still probably a guy that will get nicked and slowed with heavy contact. And I think he is 1A (and maybe goalline) to Best's 1 if they both play - as I think LeShore was hoped to be.

But I'm a lot less bummed about Hillis than I was. : )

I hope for nothing but good news for Jahvid Best. As a fan of all Pittsburgh sports, the big news today is that Sidney Crosby will finally play again Monday night after missing over ten months due to concussion-related symptoms. I enjoy watching Jahvid play, but for his sake, the best thing that can happen for his future health is to take a very cautious approach in his return. To me, Best seems very unlikely to play again this year. If he plays, it would likely be only sparingly and probably only in the playoffs or a similar must-win regular season game. I'm rooting for him, but he has a very long road back to being cleared to play. First, he needs to be able to perform light exercise, then he'll need to be cleared for non-contact practice. Then he'll need to get cleared for contact. Each step of the way, the Lions medical staff will be preforming a battery of brain function tests (developed initially by Joe Maroon here in Pittsburgh) to see that his brain is not suffering any setbacks from the exertion. Finally, after all of those stages are met and satisfactorily passed, Best could be cleared to play in a game.Unless the Lions are keeping Jahvid's progress a complete secret, to me he is still at stage one or two of his recovery. Since he's now been able to watch practice, it's probably stage two. Crosby had the same issues at first. For weeks or months, he could not handle certain lighting or handle viewing anything happening at high speed, like game films for example.

Stashed Smith on by bench instead of handcuffing Forte with Barber(actually dropped/added him 6 times in two weeks, and not even the best owner took notice lol).. But not once did I consider starting him vs the worse run d in the league :wall:

Real credit goes to the fbg staff :thanks: half my league didn't know he was still in the NFL until now.

What's his value this Thursday?

Short week, so I doubt Best will be back, but does K Smith have RB3 value?

I picked him up the week he was signed, but didn't play him in my flex spot this week (started Denarius Moore instead-doh!); it's probably going to cost me a win.

I'm not sure if he's worth a play this week, I don't want to be "chasing points," and lose another game, not when playoffs are hanging in the balance.

Huh?This was the Panthers and Best will start when he clears tests. Smith isnt even close to being as talented even if he had a great game against a very suspect defense.Do yourself a favor and start Smith but stash Best. he will be back eventually.
Smith is better than Best ... in fact aside from a rare big run Best is not a very good good rb at all. He is a good receiver.
Smith is barely better than MO MO. He is lucky he has a gig really. There is a reason he has been out of football as long as he has. He had one good game against one of the worse rushing defenses. Hardly anything to hang your hat on.

The snap percentages are a good sign. It is obvious has has the burst to be effective in this offense, and, more importantly, can protect Stafford. Stafford is the franchise (along with Calvin) offensively, so they need to keep him upright. Considering this offense throws so much, it is great to see he will be in on a huge percentage of snaps. If Stafford is healthier moving forward and can keep the extra guy out of the box (I think Calvin might do that anyway in some instances), there should be some room to run. Let's be honest, the Lions need some semblance of a run game in order make it anywhere. They can't rely solely on the pass.

On a side note - anyone in a DMC or Smith boat? Been waiting weeks for McFadden and now I will likely have to pick between Smith on Thanksgiving or wait until/if DMC is healthy by Sunday. Would you roll the dice with Smith on Thursday and not wait for word about DMC?

He should be at least RB3 material this week. Why wouldn't he? They are going to probably be playing from behind and he is their best blocking back and receiver out of the backfield. Plus it might be another shootout where he will get some chances to score.I think he is a RB2 with RB1 potential this week.I'm plugging him in for Bradshaw because I can't afford to wait and see if he plays.

You just can't let it go, can you?Smith looked good in his limited touches, including pass protection against Chicago. Then he went on to completely out-play Morris and Williams, not only in playing time, but in actual game production and you still refuse to see that he's got RB2/3 or definite flex value playing on a potent offence and with what appears to be a pretty good playoff schedule? From all reports Best still has not been cleared for light physical work, and even if he has there are still many more hurdles that he has to get over before he can practice with contact, let alone play. The reason Smith was out of football was injuries. The guy had talent when the Lions first drafted him, he got hurt and was subsequently cut. He's over his injuries in great shape and now has an opportunity.

There is definitely something to the argument that it was the Panthers. Below is all lead RB stats versus Carolina this year:

Beanie Wells 18-90-1, 4-12-0

James Starks 9-85-0, 3-30-0

MJD 24-122-0, 3-45-0

Matt Forte 25-205-1, 4-23-0

DeAngelo Williams 9-115-1, 0-0-0

Michael Turner 27-139-2, 1-8-0

Tim Hightower 17-88-0, 0-0-0

Adrian Peterson 20-83-1, 5-76-1

Chris Johnson 27-130-1, 4-44-0

Kevin Smith 16-140-2, 4-61-0

So the expectations do need to be tempered a bit going forward, but Smith still looked good yesterday and should benefit from being fresh and part of a potent offense.

Their defense really must be bad if their own running back put up 115yds and 1 TD on them... :lmao: That said... there are a ton of big names on that list and Smith had the best game of them all. So there is also something to be said about that.

edit: also fixed his stats for you... he had a receiving TD as well.

So....we should take nothing from the fact that he had a higher average than all but two of them? I don't think anybody is trying to say Smith is here to stay as an RB1....but to completely write him off is lunacy. Guy was a highly touted rookie whose career was derailed by injuries. It's not really a stretch to say he might be back...and he's worth a looooooooong look. It's no stretch to say he might well have RB2 value going fwd this year.

The names on the above list are huge, and Smith smoked them all....on few touches than all but three of them. Would be excited to get any of those healthy RB on my wire....

Absolutely... in his rookie year Smith went for 238/976/8 for 4.1ypc rushing and 286/7.3/0 receiving. That is a solid rookie season and he was on a much worse team with much worse weapons back then (By much worse team I of course mean the 0-16 Lions). Now, with him being healthy again and being on a team with some large passing game threats he could be one of those pickups that makes the difference between a league championship. The guy knows the playbook and knows the offense, he also knows all the guys in the locker room. That is a big deal, knowing all of that after being on the team again for 10 days. If you want to believe that this is the only shade of light for Smith that's fine, I can understand skepticism but to say he is flat out worthless is one of the dumbest things you could possibly say. Sure it was against Carolina, but he had the largest fantasy day of any RBs Carolina has faced this season. With guys like Forte, Turner, MJD and Peterson on the same list as him. Being at the top of said list seems pretty damn promising.

Don't recall saying that at all. I think he shows great promise the rest of the way, just that we need to temper expectations a bit given that he ran all over a horrendous rush defense.

Does this mean the end of Best this season?
Huh?This was the Panthers and Best will start when he clears tests. Smith isnt even close to being as talented even if he had a great game against a very suspect defense.Do yourself a favor and start Smith but stash Best. he will be back eventually.
Smith is better than Best ... in fact aside from a rare big run Best is not a very good good rb at all. He is a good receiver.
Smith is barely better than MO MO. He is lucky he has a gig really. There is a reason he has been out of football as long as he has. He had one good game against one of the worse rushing defenses. Hardly anything to hang your hat on.
Smith put up over 1000 combined yds in 2 consecutive seasons on one of the worst teams in NFL history and has averaged 4 yds per for his career Best averages 3.7 yds in a very good offense. Take away 1 game and he has averaged 3.2 yds per carry in his other 21 games. He's been inadequate as a rb.
