NFL | Kornheiser will return to MNF in 2007

Thu, 11 Jan 2007 11:25:40 -0800

Neil Best, of Newsday, reports ESPN will bring analyst Tony Kornheiser back to "Monday Night Football" in 2007. ESPN executive vice president Norby Williamson said, "Tony's one-of-a-kind perspective was an integral part of our record-setting, inaugural 'Monday Night Football' season. We are absolutely looking forward to his return."
Thoughts?

Yeah. The missing piece is Theisman, I have my fingers crossed he'll be back too. They make MNF worth watching....

I agree with Leroy,

If the can somehow "X" Theeezman out of the equation,

I may be able to deal with the garbage that comes out of Tony's mouth.

His shtick of alternately lobbing softballs to Joe, then trying to expose his intellectual shortcomings is lame.

Like him on PTI, hate him on MNF. He actually made me like Theismann more.

Boo. Hiss.

I never thought I would hate a MNF crew more than Madden, but it has happened.

The worst part are the celebrity guests.

Gag me.

If it's their inaugural season, how can it be record-setting?

I was thinking the same thing - what records are they talking about anyway, most extensive use by viewers of the mute button ever?

They set records for most viewers of an ESPN show/event.

Best stretch of MNF announcing was when Wilbon was in the booth and Theisman shut up.

The big problem is Theisman, not Kornheiser.

He makes me laugh...am I the only one?
No, I agree with you here. C'mon now, we are football guys/fans. What do the guys in the booth have to do with us watching/enjoying a game or not? I agree with the other about Joe T, but my reason is I think he talks to the audience like they are idiots and those of us here ARE NOT. If Tony's schtick brings in more viewers, more power to him. Those of us who are neck deep in fantasy and real FB can watch a game with it on mute or, better yet, turn on the Westwood One broadcast.

The good ones point out stuff going on away from where the camera is focused - I appreciate that the most. They also offer insight into what goes on on the sidelines, in player evaluation and development, game planning, etc.Troy Aikman is good at stuff like that. It was interesting to hear Vermeil when he was on the broadcast too.

Also for the worst ratings in the history of MNF.

I actually hate them all. Tirico should stick to golf.I know some people hated Mike Patrick, but I didn't mind Theismann as much when Patrick was in the booth.I wish Theismann would just get permanently relegated to the Blue-Gray Bowl and be done with it.

Every night while saying my prayers, I thank God for kicking Maguire and Patrick back to the college football curb. I honestly don't care who is calling the ESPN games as long as I don't have to listen to those two bozos. Together with Theismann they were the triumvirate of idiocy.

PTI is the best sports show on TV, IMHO. Kornheiser is fantastic on that, but on MNF he doesn't belong.

However, as many posters have noted, he's WAY better than Patrick and Maguire. So I'll give this move a :goodposting:

Am I the only one that really doesn't care about announcers at all as long as they do a somewhat serviceable job? I can't think of one single announcer on any big tv network that I've ever not liked. To me its about football, not the announcers.

:rolleyes:Not only is Notre Dame ruining college football, they're doing their best to f up Monday nights.

I actually liked the combo in the booth.

IMO Theisman makes a good straight man to Kornheiser's shtick, as well as other people.

"Hows the leg" had to be one of the classic Monday Night One-Liners EVER!

What's scary is that, from the couple college games I heard with him, Maguire wasn't that bad this year (not great, but not annoyingly bad like on MNF). I'm convinced Theesman just draws everyone in the booth into his massive vortex of crappiness.

I agree, Kornheiser isn't as good on MNF as he is on PTI (which also agree is the best sports show on TV hands down!!!!) but he is more tolerable than Dennis Miller, McGuire and some of the bozo's from the past.

Theisman seems to be more "politically correct" now adays than in the past. Even though as a person, Thiesman is an #####, I liked the politically incorrect/ straight-shooter commentary from past years in the booth much better.

How about just bringing in the whole PTI jokers into the MNF booth...Kornheiser, Wilbon and Dan Lebitard (BAM!) in the booth with "Stat Boy" as your sideline guy? We need much more coverage of the cheerleaders as well. Nothing boosts ratings better than T&A.

i would love to see them add the bit where he mentions all the screw ups during that episode. It amazes me how often i hear radio broadcasts and halftime interviews where the guy will say something completely wrong and nobody will correct him. This isnt just light hearted conversation at a dinner party. You are supposed to be informing, not misinforming.

I agree that the game is what is important and I'll tune in regardless of who they put in the booth. But you can't say the announcers make no difference. Were forced to listen to them and some are just flat out better than others. I repeat, It is all about the game and I will tune in regardless of who is calling the game but I'd rather listen to Madden & Michaels or Buck & Aikman than Kronheiser & Theisman or that little weasel Gumble. It is rediculous to say the broadcast crew doesn't matter. We have to listen unless you are ok watching on mute and I for one didn't spend the kind of money I did on a smokin' surround system to watch football on mute.

I only like Tirico... but I remember reading somewhere that Kornheiser didn't like doing Monday Night & wasn't going to return. But I guess the 1.8 million he's getting from ESPN changed his mind.

For the most part the whole ESPN Monday Night Football program is not good!

The special guests in the booth and the guest spots from live from the athletes at their homes take so much away from the game. I don't need to be entertained apart from the game. Just show me and report the game.

Oh and the sideline reports are usually pretty useless as well. The lengthy player introduction can be done in a quicker manner. I don't need to miss a play to hear another guy is from "the U".

Two guys in the booth are enough and just do the game instead of trying to gear the program to more of a diverse demographic.

Who is really watching the games?? Us fantasy football guys! Gear it to us.

Well, on the bright side, at least ESPN doesn't bombard us with that gawd awful Pink remake of a Joan Jett song before the game and leading into and out of every commercial break like in the Sunday night game. That thing makes the baby jeebus cry.

Nope. I didn't like McGuire and Patrick, but I was fine watching the games. Tirico and Kornheiser are a big improvement. But again, who really cares?
