Kubiak says RBBC for week 1 (1 Viewer)

Texans coach Gary Kubiak confirmed the Texans expect to use a Running Back by Committee in Week 1.

Speaking of this weekend's preseason game, Kubiak said, "Wali (Lundy) and (RB Vernand) Morency will play the game rotating as if we were playing opening day." This confirms that both running backs are quality fantasy sleepers, although they will be difficult to use because they may cancel each other out. Aug. 25 - 8:01 pm et

Very big news here. I can't say I'm surprised, and I believe it may very well be the case that both get a sizable share of the carries week one, but I vehemently believe that one of the two will eventually start getting the bulk. I'm a believer that teams which employ a true RBBC do so only because they are trying to determine which one is more productive, and once it is established, start to veer more and more of the carries to one back. As the majority of posters here have indicated, I believe that if Morency can stay healthy he will be a worthy #2 fantasy back with 15-20 touches a game. Though I won't be starting him until at least week #2.

The plan:

Wait until THAT GUY (the one who walks into the draft armed only with a three-month-old FF magazine) takes D.D. waaaaaaaaaay too early, then take Morency and Lundy in back-to-back rounds late in your draft. Just how late depends on many things, including knowing how many sharks are in your league, and the number of rounds and required RB starters in your draft.

i did this the other night in a guppie league..... i grabbed morency in the 9th then waited a bit and took lundy (half the live draft said who is that guy) $$$ league :D

Well played. Now just hope that one of them rips it up.

I must admit I don't know that much about Lundy. I guess I'll side with Morency for now, but if it's a true RBBC, that's not good for either one of them.

Does d.davis make any sort of contribution this year? i mean, if the rbbc goes better than anticipated, does the window even open back up for davis in houston again?

Good plan, but in a shark league you may only be able to grab one. Obviously, sharks would say let one go first and draft the other one later at better value, but that's not always possible.Taking D Davis out of the equation; if you have the last pick of the draft and Lundy and Morency are both available, so you can only take one (no pickups after the draft allowed) - after checking the pre-season rotation and stats and reading all the latest news - who's the pick?

Probably should be a pole.

I'd take Morency if I had to decide on only one.

I can't imagine wanting to use two draft picks and roster slots on backup running backs in Houston. Take a flyer on one, but don't be wasteful.

FWIW Kubiak considerred Denver's running game last year a RBBC with Anderson and Bell.

In linked article aboved(followed link) Kubiak also says DD is week to week and is running.

BTW Chris Taylor gets the best quotes from the coach. Haven't had the pleasure, have you guys seen him play yet?

Are they truly backups, I have Dom Davis in a dynasty league and none of the news I have seen so far has been encouraging. I could see Houston picking someone up after the roster deadline/cut days, but I think one of these two will be the starter for the near future. I think the game this weekend will go a long way as to who will get the majority of the time at the beginning of the season. Lundy has looked very good in both games so far and got the start last weekend. Verand was struggling initially with the zone running, and only played last week but put up very good numbers. I will be watching the situation closely. Theoretically either player could have more value than Mike Bell, seeing as how I think both of the Texans runners have more talent. Of course Denver has a better line, but the value is much greater with these guys.

I certainly don't think DD is out of the running:

(on RB Domanick Davis 8-22) “He ran well last week. He stayed here for treatment this weekend, everything’s been good up to this point, when that day’s coming that he comes back out here I’d like to hope that it’s before the week’s out, but I don’t want to put that burden on him or tell you guys that and be wrong. We’re playing it day-to-day, but I know he’s made a lot of progress. He’s going to have to come out and practice and get the feel, get hit and get the pads on because that’s a stage he hasn’t been through in a long time. Hopefully that’ll happen here at some point. As I said, and I’ll continue to say, we’re going to do what’s best for him. When it’s right, he’ll be back out here. He won’t be pushed to be back out there. It’s got to be right, it’s his knee and he’ll know. We’re just trying to do everything we can for him physically and as a player.”
I don't draft players for week 1. If DD is good to go, the others won't play much. Of course that's a giant if.

I did not think Taylor is in the same class as Lundy and Morency from what I have seen.

The appeal is the upside. In the five games that either Wells or Morency started in Davis' stead, they averaged approx. 100 total yards and a TD per game for the starter. Wells had four of those starts and Morency had one. Also, as mentioned above, there are different types of RBBCs. The Denver one (where Kubiak cam from) produced two decent RBs. If, for my RB4/5 in a league with 12 or more teams, I have the chance to produce strong fantasy numbers from my bench RBs, I am ecstatic. The upside is high, the price is low. If this means I draft one less TE, k , or def to take this chance, I think it is worth it. And, both have looked pretty good in preseason. Enough so, that I think production will follow.

I would take Morency/Lundy for the playoff stretch. What are the chances DD finishes the season? Yes, that's right. All players have the same injury risk. :boxing:

from what I hear he's nowhere near being ready to be a starter on an NFL team. Didn't intend for anyone to misconstrue that

For all I know DD may not even suit up until week 8. If that were the case, maybe he'll be ok come playoff time. I'm no DD apologist, I just think he's the best they have by far when healthy, which isn't often.

I know even less about C Taylor than i do Lundy. It's been stated in this thread that he's not in the same class as Lundy / Morency, but you never know when someone like him will bolt to the front of the class, considering Lundy and Morency aren't exactly top tier themselves.

Does anyone else think we are taking this quote out of context. I would like to see the rest, but the "as if we were playing opening day" comment doesn't read the same way that I think it is being interpreted. To me, it sounds like he is saying that instead of say Morency with the 1st team and Lundy the rest of the way, he is going to rotate them both in with the first team, i.e. with the same people and play calling that would be done on opening day. I guess I just read it as he wants both to get reps as if they were playing week 1, but not that his week 1 plan is to rotate both of these guys in.Maybe I am wrong, but with these snippets, sometimes they are completely taken out of context.

I'll take Kubiak at his word for his week 1 plans (a risky proposition with a Disciple of Skeletor).

The big news here is that Morency is no longer "struggling to learn the offense." To me this means he has momentum in the RB battle.

IIRC hasn't Morency had trouble staying healthy? He has already been dinged from time to time in the preseason and missed some practices. I see Lundi getting the carries in 60/40 or 70/30 split until one of them seperates themselves or, Morency gets dinged again. my .02.

had not thought of it that way....I don't think it's what he meant but I wasn't there interesting never-the-less

I'm also not sure which of Lundy or Morency to target first, but I'd probably go with Morency since, while it's a very small sample, he looked good starting last year (albeit in a different system).

That's not to say Lundy can't be just as good, but in a flip of the coin scenario, I'd rather go with a guy with proven game experience.

I disagree but this is a :goodposting: because it reminds us of the dangers of taking a partial quote and projecting a gameplan out of it.

Camp quotes - Day 18

August 17, 2006

HoustonTexans.com

Following are excerpts from coach Gary Kubiak and players following the eighteenth day of the Texans' 2006 training camp.

(on playing multiple running backs in the regular season)

“We’ll play two for sure, we might play three. We’ll definitely have a system where we’ll rotate before so we’re not just wearing out one guy. I think you have to have two on game day to be effective.”
www.houstontexans.com The week 1 thru week 16 plan is definitely going to be a rotation. Kubiak has been saying it since it became clear DD was not going to be able to start. Now all we have to do is figure out which two (if not three!) backs he plans to use for his starting rotation.

Morency & Lundy?

Morency & Smith?

Lundy & Smith?

Once / if DD comes back.

DD & Morency?

DD & Lundy?

DD & Smith?

Every team "rotates" 2 or 3 RBs through a game. Rarely does a starting RB get 70%+ of the team's carries. I see Kubiak as wanting to figure out a rhythm where he utilizes each guy's strengths the best.

It sounds like nobody has a real handle on this situation.

Will D.D. return at some point? Probably and will likely get an opportunity to regain his job.

In the meantime, who is likely the better RB to have, Morency or Lundy? Nobody seems to know for sure.

It just looks like an awful mess that should be avoided if you are drafting right now.

What are the Houston writers reporting? Maybe they have the best insight?

I certainly don't think DD is out of the running:

Don't know if your handle means this,But I play PRS's as well.Best guitars in the world!2 EG-4's1-CE1- Les Paul cut PRSAS far as the RB situation I think one will emerge at some point. Morency seems to always have some type of strain, bruise or what not. Lundy has looked good. It will be interesting. I would think they expect Davis back a month into the season, but who know's if he will ever be right. He just may be done and a 3 years flash in the pan. It would be a shame, because he was great in PPR.As far as Smith, that guy is done.

Either way, Davis doesn't hold much value. At the most, he'll get 1200 yards and a few scores, fine numbers for a #2 or 3, but he won't have his breakout season until they get an offensive line.

Davis put up mad points in PPR in 2004. He finished 3rd overall in ANT's HP scoring (which is my home) So I am trying to figure out what your post meant?

Agreed, DD certainly can bring it even with Houston's crappy O line.

I just took Morency at 12.11 and Lundy at 13.2 as my 6 and 7th rbs. I usually like to stick with 5 rbs but there really wasnt value there with the WR's. I am hoping for a solid week 1 form one of them, then I can trade one and cut the other.

I agree. Taylor caught my eye the first week of training camp and I was wondering how he was going to turn out. He seems to be quick but I just haven't seen him being that elusive or showing good cutting. His most successful plays I saw in the training camps I was able to make seemed to be sweeps where he could outrun guys. I think Morency and Lundy fit the role of what Kubiak is looking for a little better. On Morency vs Lundy, I think it's pretty close but I'd take (and have taken) Morency before Lundy. Morency looked better in blitz pickup I thought. If that is indeed the case, it might give him an edge on playing time. Especially as the Texans line looks better, but I don't know that I'd say it's made it's way up to an "average" NFL pass blocking unit yet.

In 04, he racked up 1188 yds and 13 TDs, so he was a good #2 back like I said, but the top backs usually gain 1600+ yds and 20+ TDs.

 DD had 1776 yards and 14 TDs in 2004. He was around the 5th to 6th best RB overall in non-PPR leagues, and according to airraid, #3 in PPR.That's a lot better than a good #2 RB. Unless you're in a 2 to 4 team league anyway.

Davis put up mad points in PPR in 2004. He finished 3rd overall in ANT's HP scoring (which is my home) So I am trying to figure out what your post meant?
In 04, he racked up 1188 yds and 13 TDs, so he was a good #2 back like I said, but the top backs usually gain 1600+ yds and 20+ TDs.
one of you is talking about combined yardage, the other isn't

 DD had 1776 yards and 14 TDs in 2004. He was around the 5th to 6th best RB overall in non-PPR leagues, and according to airraid, #3 in PPR.

That's a lot better than a good #2 RB. Unless you're in a 2 to 4 team league anyway.
That is a pretty staggering statistic. I think DD is a good, solid RB, but those are wild numbers. I can't shake myself of the notion that Houston is basically Denver-lite, where you put a solid player in the backfield and wind up with great production. That, more than anything, is why I'm determined to get the Morency/Lundi combo late in all my drafts. A lot of people are assuming this is going to be a worthless RBBC, but the fact is, if either of these two guys gets a majority of the load, even a slight one, they could turn into a fantastic producer. And I think there's a great chance of it happening real early in the season, even if it's not determined this moment.
