QB's performance may merit bonuses

Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner could receive bonuses totaling $1.5 million if he plays well Sunday against his former team, the St. Louis Rams.

Warner would receive a $500,000 bonus if he finishes the season with a passer rating of 90.0 or above. Warner is at 90.0 entering the final game.

He would receive an additional $500,000 if he ranks in the top 10 in the NFL in any of the following categories: passing yards, touchdown passes and yards per attempt. His bonuses, however, cannot total more than $1.5 million.

Considering that Warner already has a 90+ passer rating and already ranks in the top 10 in YPA and TDs, I'd say that he has more incentive to stay on the bench this week. The only way he could lose would be if Rivers or Manning threw for 5 TDs, or if Kitna or Anderson had 10+ YPA (on 300+ yards) this week.

But he has much, MORE more to lose by playing. One bad throw and his passer rating would drop below 90. He could also potentially drop out of the top 10 in YPA if he has a bad game (and Kitna and/or Anderson go off).

Wait, I thought there was no such thing as added incentive? I read somewhere that players give 100% every week.

Bottom line: if Warner sits, this is what he's guaranteed:$500,000 for 90+ passer rating

$500,000 being in the Top-10 in TD passes (unless Rivers throws for 5 TDs)

$500,000 being in the Top-10 in YPA (unless Kitna or Anderson throw for 300+ yards on <30 attempts)

But if Warner plays, this is what could happen:

-$500,000 if his passer rating is 89 or lower

-$500,000 if his YPA is less than 7.5 and Kitna or Anderson throw for 300+ yards on <35 attempts

Plus, he has no incentive to play for the Yardage bonus, because his contract only allows a max of $1.5M in bonuses anyway.

That's great and all, but won't the owner insist Warner start?

Maybe he'll just hand the ball off every play

So the bottom line is that since Warner is playing, he's got some extra motivation to do well.

good for Warner, one of the better guys in the NFL
We'll see if he gets them. The Bidwells have been among the very cheapest owners in the league, or any sport, for decades. If they don't plan on Kurt being a major part of the team I can't see them "giving" him 1.5 mil in a meaningless game. They may have changed their ways a bit in recent years, but I grew up there and saw too many cases of their cheapness on display so I'll believe it when I see it.

Are you suggesting that they would void an NFL contract? Is there a precedence for this?

he might be saying that the Cardinals pull Warner for enough of the game for him to lose one or more of the incentives...

No I'm suggesting that Bidwell may find a way to keep Warner from achieving those incentives, unless he plans on having Warner around next year for sure. If he's going to be, then there's no point in pissing off a player. It's almost impossible to describe how cheap the Bidwells were/are. These are the guys who try to cover their losses not by getting players in to win, but to raise ticket prices for bench seating at a college stadium. It wasn't until they lost their yearly sellout of Dallas fans when they were bounced from the NFCE that they started to pay players. Maybe things have changed, they sold out their season, they have some players now, and the crowd is actually boisterous and supportive. But i can see the fingers tighten on the pursestrings out of habit if nothing else now that they're out of the playoffs.

Just threw a TD to hit 90.3. As long as he doesn't throw any INTs he should be OK.

Also....it probably won't be a factor, but if his passer rating drops he could still get a $500K bonus if he throws for more than 263 yards (and 134 more than Cutler). Currently he's 95 yards behind Cutler.

1-10 ARI20 (13:34) K.Warner pass deep left intended for Bry.Johnson INTERCEPTED by J.Wade [C.Wroten] at ARI 39.

Interception Warner (Pick 6)

ETA: Pass was returned for a TD, not his sixth int.

By my calculations, he now has 89.9 for the season.

3-5-STL15 (4:08) K.Warner pass incomplete short left to E.James.

4-5-STL15 (4:02) N.Rackers 33 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-N.Hodel, Holder-M.Berger.

If Edge catches that pass,Warner clears 90.0 for the season

Great year by Warner. The guy was dynamite at home.

If you look at his final #'s, they look a lot like the best case scenario for Leinart was coming into the 2007 season.
