LA DODGERS 2009 THREAD (1 Viewer)

Nobody else anywhere is reporting it, but local 570 AM radio is reporting that the Dodgers have signed an agreement with Manny Ramirez. It will supposedly be signed later this week.

LA Times also had a story yesterday basically saying the source is reliable and "warranted our attention".Since then Colletti denied that anything has happened in the last 48 hours and Boras had a "No Comment".

FurcalHudsonMannyLoneyKempEthierBlakeMartinVery nice lineup.Billingsley, Kuroda, Wolf, Kershaw and ? is not.
:lmao:Schmidt may be the 5th starter. This really hinges on Kuroda eating innings. If he can stay strong and healthy all year long, then they'll be all right. If Kuroda falters then this could be ugly.

James McDonald is a possibility. File Eric Milton, Jeff Weaver and Shawn Estes under the "could be ugly" category.Tanyon Sturtze is in camp

New offer to Manny

Hopefully, they won't go any further - that seems to be the best offer out there by far, and the structure of it seems much more favorable to him. If he doesn't want it, then I guess he really doesn't want to play for the Dodgers.

Why are they still in the $25mm range for him? They are the only player left. Shouldn't they be in the $16mm-$18mm range here? Does Boras have naked pics of every GM in baseball or something?

The threat as I'm gathering it would be that Manny would just sit out until a couple of months into the season when contending teams, possibly having suffered injury to key players, come calling. That scenario is essentially what the Dodgers are bidding against. I agree that there are no other teams that are legit players to sign him before the season.

plus at 16 to 18 mill you open it up to other bidders like the giants who have said they wont outbid la. if la comes down though.....It sounds as if the sticking point is now that 15 mill of the 25 was being deferred. Both sides need to stop playing games. 3 year 75 mill and be done with it.

Why on earth would you pay Manny 75/3? He's about a 15 mil/yr player atm, and thats unlikely to go up. What the Dodgers should have done a long time ago was to lower their offer closer to the market price after he rejected their initial 45/2 offer. Then, they could have signed any number of outfield bats with poor defense. None as good or marketable as Manny, but they dont need Manny to win that division.

It's not going three years at this point. I wouldn't mind a 3-year, 65-mil but there's no reason for the Dodgers to go past two years. They need to just make a two-year offer without deferring any money. Not sure why McCourt can't do that.

Because he's a cheap ******* who's worried about making payments on those houses in Malibu he bought recently. Going to the press and saying Manny turned down a 2 year $45 million deal without mentioning that much of it was deferred was bush league. There's nothing to be gained by it, aside from alienating a player the team supposedly wants.

McCourt's an amateur, and it shows. This complaint to the press was a bush league move, and I'm NOT a Boras fan at all. Boras was just playing this the way a good agent should with a counter offer that changed some of the terms in what I thought was a reasonable way.

if you lower the price then you invite others like the Giants into the bidding. If SF signs him, with their pitching, they become the favorites according to some. I dont think they are good enough but you open it to competition from teams that arent interested at 20 mill. 75 may be harsh but manny is still a top 5 hitter in the game. His defense is not as bad as people like to claim. Its not great but whats the option in LF, Juan Pierre? Theres a guy with worse offense and defense...

True, its going to take 2 years/45 mill nothing defered.

Well, first off he's not worth 20 mil a year, let alone the 22 they're offering. Second, no one is going to offer him anything beyond 2 years and there's been no indication that the Giants are even in the same ball park. Frankly, the Dodgers dont need Manny at this point. They can either wait for him to come to his senses or make a trade mid season for one of the many sluggers that will be dumped for payroll reasons.

2 of 3 at SD to start the season ain't bad. Loney is hitting the hell out of the ball right now. I believe the bullpen has a 0.00 ERA after three games too. Very nice all around.

Thanks for the jinx, redman. Split with BLUE in the first 4 is an overall win for the Friars. :goodposting:

 I say that and Loney goes 0-fer, the bullpen blows the lead, and they lose the game. ####### greeeeeeeeeeeat! When I wrote that I'd forgotten that it was a four-game series.

Wow that game was pathetic. Ship Russell Martin down to the 7th spot in the order. He sucked the second half of last season and he sucks now. Nine left on base. Double-play with a runner at third to end the game. Horrible decision by Torre to bring out Ohman to start the eighth.

:jawdrop: Tough crowd

i really liked belisario's stuff in the two games i saw. torre probably used him too long the second time. can't believe he was in the minors for like 8 years.

Orlando Hudson has hit for the cycle today, in four at bats. Pretty impressive. He's looking like a great pickup for the Dodgers already.

First cycle by a Dodger since 1970 - I knew it had been a long time but I'm surprised it was that long. Pretty nice debut at Dodger Stadium for the O-Dog.

Tremendous home opener all the way around - Hudson hits for the cycle, Ethier goes yard twice, Billingsley fans 11 in 7 innings and the Big Blue Wrecking Crew hammer the Giants and finally beat the Unit at Dodger Stadium. The only way it could have gone better is if Manny's shot to right center in his first at bat would have left the yard. Great day - glad I had it off and could watch it all.

Awesome game! I was at the stadium and it was a great day for Dodger baseball. I am quickly becoming a big Hudson fan. Billingsly showing that he can be the ace was nice too.

A walk-off walk isn't as dramatic as a walk-off homer, but it gets the job done. Always nice to beat the Giants, regardless of the manner of the win. Great start by Kershaw tonight. Not so great performance by the pen.

I hate that Kershaw couldn't get the win (I don't understand why he wasn't left in to pitch the 8th - it's not like he was fading), but I'm loving watching a Dodger team that looks very resilient and didn't panic after that ugly top of the 8th inning. That hitting lineup is looking more and more formidable, and Manny isn't even locked in yet.

Kershaw wasn't fading certainly, but the Dodgers are still going to be careful with him this season as he just turned 21. I think letting him go at least one batter and seeing how that went would have been a fine decision, but it's better to err on the side of caution with such a talent like him. The bullpen has given up leads in each of his games now.And that lineup does look good. It's weird to watch a game and look at the batters coming up in the next inning and thinking, "Okay, those guys could get something started" as opposed to years of "that looks like it will be a 1-2-3 inning". When Manny gets going, it will be pretty scary.

Kershaw has pitched great so far this year. I know they have kid gloves on with him but how many inning can we expect from him this year. I would love to see 175 or 180 but doubt we get that many.

Aside from the pitcher's spot, there's not a "safe" part of that lineup. The team's HR leader right now is hitting 8th, and Furcal-Hudson-Manny at the top is frightening. What's impressed me, though, is the development of the middle of the lineup, 4th-7th, which is all the youngsters, Ethier, Loney, Martin, and Kemp. That's really the difference. Ned Colletti needs praise for resisting all the calls in the last couple of years to trade those guys away "for an established hitter/pitcher", like the proposed Kemp-Peavy trade.

I would be surprised to see him get that many innings, just because it would be a huge jump from last season's 109 innings (107 in the regular season), and the most he's thrown in a season was 122 in the minors in '07. 180 would be a 50% increase over that total, and unless they absolutely need 180 from him because of a playoff race, I think the Dodgers would rather see 150-160 this year.
