Larry Carlton- "Goodbye" (1 Viewer)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Carlton

Great work with Steely Dan, and the jazz group Fourplay is excellent, in addition to all his solo work, particularly the album 'On Solid Ground' which he started recording, and finished after, recovering from being shot in the throat in a random act of violence...

Absolutely amazing guitarist.

Carlton is the man. His solo on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlamagne" is often mentioned as among the best solos in rock history.

So, I mentioned how I thought "Goodbye" had a Hill Street Blues kinda vibe. I just read that Larry Carlton actually won a Grammy for his performance on the theme song to Hill Street Blues. Interesting. I must've learned that before at some point, but don't recall it.

Also just learned that "Goodbye" is dedicated to Les Paul.

Yup - that was Carlton on Hill Street Blues. One of the best TV theme songs of all-time IMO.
Carlton won a Grammy for that performance.

A lot of his material is considered smooth jazz (Fourplay, solo, etc) I've never considered myself a smooth jazz kind of guy and don't listen to any other smooth jazz artists, but I enjoy Carlton's work in this genre. I think it's the masterful blend of jazz and blues elements along with his fantastic tone and knack for groove. His Sapphire Blue album is an excellent bluesy jazz recording.

Just saw that he's playing live in my area soon, hoping to make that show. Never seen him live before.
