Larry Johnson Responds to the 400 Carry Concerns (1 Viewer)

These last two posts seem to be posted in some other language...

There may be valid points in there somewhere but I have no idea.

On topic, KC's OL and QB will be much greater factors in determining LJ's 2007 than his 2006 carries.

Just like on food where a "best before" date doesn't magically change the item from OK to eat to fatally poisonous, there is no mandatory effect that must kick in based on total touches. Would everybody feel better if LJ had gotten hurt and missed a game or two in 2006 but stayed under 400 carries?

I would like to note that Carl Peterson and the Chiefs organization have effectively wagered $19 million that Larry Johnson's body will not break down in 2007 or 2008 and probably 2009 and that he does have some very good years in front of him. Arrowhead sells out every game, every year, so they could have dumped/traded him if they were worried without losing any money due to keeping a soon-to-be washed up running back.

As others have said, the poor QB, average O-line and week 2,3,4,5 concerns would be most worrisome to me. If Huard gets named the starter (more likely now after Croyle disaster tonight), that would be beneficial to LJ, as he was productive last year with Huard.

That's equally anecdotal and unsystematic, unfortunately. I'll see if I can give some thought to it.
Like the 400 carry theory? You don't even know how much a RB was hit last year. You know, physical contact. The hilarious part is, SJAX might have taken more punishment then LJ, but since the data sucks, no one really knows. But go nuts predicting the future.

Of course it's not exactly the same as "mileage" on your car as the body heals itself and your car doesn't but there are some similarities. I can remember Terrell Davis saying similar things about how not playing much at Georgia was actually a big plus for him as he didn't have the accumulated injuries and nicks that a guy that starts 3 years in a big college conference would have.I personally am not worried about Johnson and the carries. I'm more worried about him tweaking a hamstring in week 1 trying to do too much without being in "football shape". As hard as he worked at API, it's not the same as being in River Falls. We'll see.J
Many people bring up Terrell Davis as an example of a back who wore down prematurely and they'd be right. But, at 6'1 230 lbs, Johnson is probably better equipped to take the pounding in a feature role than Davis who was 5'11 210lbs when he was playing. I also find it interesting that Johnson has 1158 fewer NFL carries than LaDainian Tomlinson, and yet nobody makes a strong case that he will break down. For a point of reference, LT heading into the upcoming season has 640 carries more than Davis when he suffered the injury that eventually ended his career.

Easy now... LT's off limits.

What else do you expect him to say? Something like "Yeah i carried the ball over 400 times. I wake up everyday in a little more pain than the previous. I'm not really into contact, so I'd prefer if they brought in another back to steal carries and touchdowns. Also, if my load is lightened, my stat line goes down and then Mr Peterson won't have to pay me as the highest back in the league. So to answer your question, 400 carries is too much."
I'm pretty sure OP already answered this in his post when he gave an exact example of something that he could've said if he was still feeling tired.
